Nikon (Nippon Kogaku
K.K.) Finder Group of Accessories |
Part Four:- Universal Nikon Sport Frames Finder
Nikon Sport frame Finder is NOT an optical type accessory. It is an all metal open frame finder for use with some of the most popular focal length Nikkor lenses for rangefinder cameras such as 3.5cm, 5cm 8.5cm and 13.5cm - that is correspond with most focal lengths included in the Variframe and Varifocal optical Finders. The individual frame(s) hinges up will into position when mounted onto the Nikon camera via the accessory shoe. When not in use, the entire unit can be fold down compactly to fit into a leather carrying case which is supplied as standard accessory for this metal frame finder. Note: IF anyone has seen an additional frame provision for 10.5cm lenses, please send in your pictures to update the site.
Each of the focal length is engraved onto the individual frame. It is not as big as in this illustrative photos here where original purpose is to show the details.

<<<--- As shown in these two pictures, after it is erected, the tiniest rectangular frame that shown at the top picture is actually positioned at the rear as a rough approximate visual guide for picture composition. Despite it has been marketed between 1953/5 ~1959/60 none of the finders are known to be having any serialized production numbers.

The basic concept for operation is to provide a quick visual assessment on picture framing / composition only. For an example, news photographers who may not been having time to react via conventional viewfinder viewing in a rush event and simply make use of the available frame as a quick form of reaction to include picture elements within the picture frame. It may not be as precise as compare to the like of Variframe and or Varifocal finders but its main advantage is its relatively cheap price. However, this may not be interpreting as it is very salable item in comparison to the optical finders group.

There are probably two know versions being introduced. The shown model here is the earlier model which makes up in an all chrome finishing. I read that the later models have a colored frame inside to allow photographer with an visual outline of the frame corresponding to the picture angle of the lens in use. Another difference is the focal length markings. one with the engraved numbers facing up on the front, while the later ones having the engraved focal lengths seen as reversed (only correctly displayed when folded back in place). These differences are minor and doesn't add any premium over the late models over the earlier versions.
<<<-- Shown is a Canon RF Sport Frame finder model with a typical varifocal finder, the sport frame finder was very similar to Nikon but the varifical finder was leaning more towards to Leica design.
