Canon EF 50-200mm f/3.5~4.5 AFD & Canon EF 50~200mm f/3.5~4.5L Standard-to-Tele Zoom lenses (Marketed/Discontinued 1987 (1988) ~1990)

These were an early version of the Canon EF zoom lenses. The standard version was introduced immediately after the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 ultrawide in December, 1987. The AFD professional L-Series version was only introduced half a year later in June, 1988. Unlike many of the modern Canon zoom design, both the standard and L-series version use a single push and pull zoom design that facilitate quick, responsive zoom activation (yeap, I prefer this over the double rings type zoom). The physical dimension as well as finishing are almost quite similar and an easy visual identification was via the distinguished redlined between the two Canon zoom lenses with identical zoom range as well as maximum aperture (in fact, the differential weight factor was also similar at 690g/695g as well as measuring 75.6mm x 145.8mm (standard) versus 75.6mm x 146.4mm for the L-series equivalent). Other than these the placement markings for infrared indexes is slightly different with the L-series zoom located at the lower end of the distance window and a simpler infrared marks for 50mm, 70mm and 135mm focal length; on the other hand, the standard version is located at the upper end of the distance scale window with a more colorful display in red for 50mm, 70mm, 120mm and 200mm. Both of these early Canon EF zoom used a metal mount - considered a rare treat for most modern standard zoom lenses use today.

However, internally, both of these Canon EF optic have a different optical construction which made them different. The standard zoom uses a Lens Construction of 16 elements in 13 groups while the L-Series version has a 16 elements in 14 groups design. Others are about the same: No. of Diaphragm Blades: 8; Minimum Aperture: 29; Respective Closest Focusing Distance (m) remains the same at 1.2m with a Maximum Magnification of 0.23X. Similarly, the Filter attachment size are the same at 58mm. Technically, these two lenses were not particularly appealing to some Canon users, as it lacks the USM for quieter AF operation which some complaints it hunts a lot with some early Canon EOS models, further, the AF is not exactly that quiet and the front rotating lens elements prohibiting the use of some specialized filters. Whatever, personally, I think some of its strength have been overlooked as its very generous 4X zoom range as well as optical delivery in image resolution are not as bad as one claimed. Last - physically, it was very well built mechanically and when you compare all these with the current EF 55-200mm (except for the USM), it fairs much better value.

Canon EF 50-200mm f/3.5~4.5 AFD Zoom lens
Canon EF 50-200mm f/3.5~4.5 zoom lens

Featuring a 4x zoom ratio, the EF 50-200mm f/3.5~4.5 covers many popular focal lengths, from normal all the way up to telephoto. In addition to compact size for this zoom lens type, the lens offers full range macro capability with a minimum focusing distance of only 4 ft. (1.2m). The four group zoom system provides quality optical performance over the entire focusing range, from close-up to infinity.

The EF Electro Focus 50-200mm f3.5-4.5 incorporates an Arc-Form Drive (AFD) motor for its autofocus operation as well as Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) control. The lens takes the Canon standard popular 58mm filters.

The EF 50-200mm f/3.5-4.5L has no USM configuration , instead, it incorporates an Arc-Form Drive (AFD) motor for all of its autofocus operation and thus, manual focusing during AF operation is not possible. Manual focusing is possible via switching the mode switch to "M" where you find the MACRO setting is also located. The Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) control eliminates any mechanical linkage with most new/old EOS cameras. Similar to the standard consumer version, this L-lens also uses popular 58mm filters.

Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM (MK II) Marketed Mk I: 1998, discontinued 2003; MKII Marketed 2003~current model

Both the Canon EF zoom lenses have been long discontinued in 1990. You may not find many of these lenses surface in the used market. In fact, neither the Canon official Lens Work version I had these info published (similarly, the Canon Museum had no illustrations either except for a brief introduction. In March, 1998, this zoom lens type was given a revival by Canon with a compact EF55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM lens. The reduction of the maximum variable apertures (as it zooms) from f/3.5~4.5 to f/4.5~5.6 has significantly reduce their size and weight. Overall, it is a lightweight, consumer budget grade compact telephoto zoom lens was designed to be used for IX 240 SLR cameras or the EOS IX series models (equivalent to 69-250mm for 35mm format) but it is also fully compatible with 35mm EOS series SLR cameras as well.

Its newly designed five lens group construction in 13 elements in 13 groups with environment-friendly lead-free glasses and the three movable lens groups improves telephoto picture quality and results in a high-magnification zoom ratio that includes the standard range. A micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drive AF is incorporated for fast and silent AF operation. A wide zoom ring ensures smooth zoom operation for excellent operability. In 2003, in conjunction with the announcement of the EOS Kiss Digital, Canon upgraded the lightweight compact telephoto zoom lens EF55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 MK II USM, featuring a claimed improved AF speed but it looks very identical in nature. The optical system consists of 13 air-spaced lens elements and also lead-free glasses. Similar to the older MK I - it has a very large, rubberized zoom ring. With prevailing development on digital imaging, Canon claimed it is optimized for digital photography where it incorporated a high speed lens based CPU and AF algorithm. When used with the EOS Kiss Digital/Rebel Ti or Canon EOS 300V etc., this lens achieves a zoom range equivalent to 88-320 mm in 35 mm format. Personally, it is not a lens that fits for every serious photographer's aspiration but it is more like an alternative for first time SLR user. Although it is not very well made but it serves its commercial objective in delivering a marketing solution with good zoom range, reasonably good optical performance and capability to excite. Well, not all lenses are classic, agree >?
