The Nikon - F2AS Photomic (With DP-2 Finder)
(
Instruction manual for DP-12 Photomic Finder or Nikon F2AS Photomic camera body)

TTL metering at its highest sophistication. The letters AS in the name of the F2AS Photomic do not stand for "advanced" and "sophisticated" but they very well could be. For, without a doubt, the F2AS is the most advanced TTL metering single-lens reflex camera available from Nikon for the F2. Nikon DP-12 finder was the most advanced metered prisms among all that were made for the Nikon F2.

F2AS.jpg
Not to confuse you with all these differences, in a simplified term, the DP-12 was just a AI-version of the DP-3 prism that was sold along with a F2 camera body as "Nikon F2SB" back in 1976. The DP-12 was introduced a year later in 1977 which replaced the short-lived DP-3 finder with the 'new' AI coupling mechanism under the finder.
Between the two AI-spec metered prisms (DP-11 mentioned at earlier section and DP-12's F2AS), most users and collectors alike rated the LEDs powered DP-12 highly over the match needle display system used in the DP-11. Further, DP-12 employs a FAR superior metering range which reads light from as low as EV -2 to EV 17 (f/1.4 at 8 sec. to f/8 at 1/2000 sec.) with 50mm f/1.4 lens and ASA 100 while the extended shutter speed range from 1/2000 sec down to 10 seconds can be easily regarded as the most sensitive among all mechanical camera models.

Its technical spec was hard to rival by any other professional class SLR bodies available on the market during its time. Further, in conjunction with the accessory DS-12 EE aperture control attachment, the F2AS offers another level of operation ease with fully automatic exposure operation.

The Nikon DP-12 Metered Finder

The DP-12 equipped F2 is referred as F2AS and it was sold more pricey than the next Nikon-F professional camera model, Nikon F3 during the early '80. Many collectors and loyal Nikon followers regard F2 bodies produced during the late seventies represents the best of the great F2 bodies.

When couples those units with the most sophisticated Metered Prism Nikon has for the F2 series, Nikon F2AS with the right production numbers naturally demands some good premium even after twenty years !

The DP-12 finder provides similar configuration and features such as thru-the-lens (TTL) Centre-Weighted metering system; both full-aperture and stop-down measurement are provided. DP-12's AI meter coupling lever is designed to locate under the finder and thus you can attach a DP-12 onto a 1971 Nikon F2 camera body and claimed it is a F2AS. Most seasoned collector would use the serial number (77xxxxxx to 80xxxxxx) to identify the originality of the camera (I will probably get killed if keep emphasizing too much on this issue, ha!).

f2asdp2coupl.jpg
The AI coupling is a protruding lever locates just below the model designation letter "AS" (>>). When a Non-AI lens is used with the Nikon F2AS, it should be retracted by pushing the lever inward. The retracting button (>>), when slide or push will enable it to be retract back to normal position in order to couple the prism meter with any lens with a minimum spec of AI (or AI-modified).

Note: DP-11 (w/F2A) at earlier section shares similar features and functions of the AI-coupling as discussed above.
