Determining Exposure

LEDs.gif
Nikon F2AS's DP-12 display was using similar LED system as with DP-3 finder for the F2SB. In fact, the Nikon FM which has been designed to replace the Nikkormat FT-Series was also using similar method to display its exposure reading (Difference is just the display is arranged vertically instead of horizontal format employed in the DP-12).

<<< --- Exposure display used in the Nikon FM2(n) has a great deal of similarity with the F2AS/F2SB.

To determine the correct exposure with the DP-12: Switch ON the meter by moving the film-advance lever to the standoff position; with this action, one of the LED indicators will light, indicating overexposure, correct exposure or underexposure. If the plus (+) indicator lights, increase the shutter speed or decrease the aperture until the center (0) indicator just comes on and the (+) turns off; if the minus (-) indicator is lit, decrease the shutter speed or increase the aperture until the center indicator lights.

The DP-12 has three LED exposure indicators visible within the finder view field ("+" for overexposure, 'loll for correct exposure, and "-" for underexposure); thus, the DP-12 is capable of providing easy-to-read exposure information in five steps, and even at low-light levels. Additionally, the selected shutter speed and lens aperture settings are visible for maximum ease of operation for setting the desired exposure.

When two LED's light simultaneously (i.e., + and o, or - and o), the exposure setting is within 1-stop of correct exposure; thus, be sure to adjust the aperture setting slowly to get only the correct "center" (o) exposure. Values for the five settings of the LED's are described in the figure on this page.

The viewfinder provides a 0.8X magnification which is also can be considered as "High-Eyepoint" to provide a slight comfortable view across the entire 100% viewfield. The back portion of the finder has a few features which may prove useful. The Eyepiece Shutter which is a DP-12 and DP-3's exclusive. The eyepiece readylight are standard among all metered prism, which includes the standard but non-metered DE-1 eye level finder. The threaded eyepiece can accept many system eyepiece attachment accessories.

Operation is simplicity itself, too. The F2AS's metering circuit automatically couples to the aperture ring of the Al-type Nikkor lens in use for full aperture metering. And, for complete creative control, in addition to the LED exposure indicators, both aperture setting (when using a Nikkor lens offering Al) and shutter speed selected are clearly visible in the viewfinder, just below the picture area.

The F2AS's DP-12 Photomic finder incorporates the latest in advanced electronics where it can acquire during its era. From its twin silicon photo diode light sensors, with their center-weighted sensing pattern, through its sophisticated metering circuitry to its precise LED readout system.

Other "master" touches include stop down metering capability, an eyepiece shutter which provides a requiring protection against the entry of stray light through the viewfinder eyepiece which would otherwise affecting accuracy in exposure measurement., and an external meter indicator on the top of the pentaprism. Built into the eyepiece frame itself is a neon ready light which couples to Nikon flash units as they are mounted on to the camera. Simply clipping the accessory DS-12 EE aperture control attachment onto a F2AS will "convert" the mechanically operated camera into an automatic, shutter-speed priority, auto exposure control camera; extending the use of your F2 into areas that are only limited by your imagination.
