This is a new section specifically created for rangefinder system users. I guess users of RF bodies/lenses users have a distinctive taste in their own. Most of all, they are a mix of collectors, photographers, historian etc. who may be having keen interest in the photographic equipment produced during the old days. But I guess most of allm, they are the elite group who are more to appreciative the excellence of mechanical / optical engineering presenting in the rangefinder system made during the older days. As it is rather hard to satisfy everyone intention when it relates to a website as each may have their own preferences on brands or types. Over the years, I have constructed quite a number of sites featuring a series of selective camera models and/or optics but they were all related to Single lens reflex (SLR) systems but not really focused on the rangefinder system yet. So,m technically, the RF-Nikon/Nikkor section is my first attempt. When I first started the site, I simply felt it is so unfair just to concentrate on the Nikon/Nikkor alone as there are so many good photographic systems with other major labels. So, other than my initail effort on the Nikon/Nikor, I am also taking the chance begin compiling some of the other information on other respectful labels as supplementary information for surfers. As there are already many excellent, established resources on the Network on the ame topic , probablyt I don't have to pursue one by one in details but simply confine my own effort within the early series of Nippon Kogaku and Nikkor only but I would also take the opportunity to introduce other equally good photograophic resources from comparing brands. This Message Board was created just for that purpose to patch things that I feel that might be missing in my own PIM site - as well as to provide a gateway for those that were not being featured yet. You may use it for whatever you think / deem suitable - regardless it is questions & answers (Q&A) or just make good use of it to share experience among one another on the rangefinder system. Lastly, as some of the remarks presented herein may be entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal of your equipment. Naturally, you are always encouraged to make good use of this convenience of the MB here to present your own thoughts / views as well. Enjoy.

This may be useful, from Contax Compendium: it says.. " Contaxt Bayonet Mount"First developed in late 1920 during initial design works on Contax 1 under rising star Dr. Hienz Kuppenbender. It is a simple yet rugged mechanism design which uses a double connexion and internal mount for short and long focus lenses. Unlike the Leica cammed mechanism (until today with the M0; Contax mount used relatively massive cylinder incorporated into the camera body, its turning coupled internally with the camera rangefinder. Contax 1, 1932 first used this mechanism which allows interchangeability with that of the first Leica equipped with M39 threaded mount where plenty of controversy arose which were the better ones. The ease of the Contax system in use was to cause the bayonet fitment to replace the threaded mount as market standard by 1960. It ended up Leica/Leitz, whose M system cameras use their own proprietary bayonet mount, to abandon their 39mm threaded mount design. ....". I guess this is innovation against conversativeness but if the two giants had made love, the world of photographic equipment would not eb like today. Probably many great names would not have been here at all. haha ...

Nikon RF bayonet mount is like a variant (close) of the Contax bayonet. Many good lenses (nikkor) may not find accuracy when used on the contax. Shorter lenses are not that critical when stopped down. Longer lenses may have some issues. Nikon has been making specific lenses for contax later which had this rectified. I read something miss calculated when they first replicated the bayonet mount. Technical issue.

Hi.. Sorry, I am the one who asked earlier on the Zeiss for Nikon. Actualy, I read many articles of the Nikon copied Contax mount and according to reading (online) references, the contax mount is almost* similar to the Nikon. But somehow it has some differences which doesn't enable the longer lenses to be used directly between the two, true ? and can anyone offer an explanation ? Thanks ! This is a lovely Nikon oldie site !

Question: IS there an adaptor or mounting ring to permit the Zeiss 18cm lens onto a Nikon ? OR does Zeiss Jena has a Nikkor mount version to use the Nikon reflex housing ?

Hi Falker:

I can't think of any off the top of my head. I assume they had a hand in the design of the Leica f/1.5 Xenon from the prewar years, but I don't think that's what you have in mind. Schneider made a lot of SLR lenses in the postwar period, and they made lenses for the Kodak Retina rangefinders, but I've never seen one in Leica/Canon or Contax/Nikon mount that I can think of.

Just curious, does SCHNEIDER KREUZNACH made any lenses for compact rangefinder bodies ? I am not referring to the SAMSUNG P&S. I mean all those lovely old goodies such as Laicas, Contaxes or even the Nikon/Canon ?
