Classic rangefinder camera system Series :
Various Rangefinder camera models / RF Lenses - Message Board/Guestbook

This is a new section specifically created for rangefinder system users. I guess users of RF bodies/lenses users have a distinctive taste in their own. Most of all, they are a mix of collectors, photographers, historian etc. who may be having keen interest in the photographic equipment produced during the old days. But I guess most of allm, they are the elite group who are more to appreciative the excellence of mechanical / optical engineering presenting in the rangefinder system made during the older days. As it is rather hard to satisfy everyone intention when it relates to a website as each may have their own preferences on brands or types. Over the years, I have constructed quite a number of sites featuring a series of selective camera models and/or optics but they were all related to Single lens reflex (SLR) systems but not really focused on the rangefinder system yet. So,m technically, the RF-Nikon/Nikkor section is my first attempt. When I first started the site, I simply felt it is so unfair just to concentrate on the Nikon/Nikkor alone as there are so many good photographic systems with other major labels. So, other than my initail effort on the Nikon/Nikor, I am also taking the chance begin compiling some of the other information on other respectful labels as supplementary information for surfers. As there are already many excellent, established resources on the Network on the ame topic , probablyt I don't have to pursue one by one in details but simply confine my own effort within the early series of Nippon Kogaku and Nikkor only but I would also take the opportunity to introduce other equally good photograophic resources from comparing brands. This Message Board was created just for that purpose to patch things that I feel that might be missing in my own PIM site - as well as to provide a gateway for those that were not being featured yet. You may use it for whatever you think / deem suitable - regardless it is questions & answers (Q&A) or just make good use of it to share experience among one another on the rangefinder system. Lastly, as some of the remarks presented herein may be entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal of your equipment. Naturally, you are always encouraged to make good use of this convenience of the MB here to present your own thoughts / views as well. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for any rangefinder camera models and/or optical group of the system, its creator. If your intention is to dispose your Rangefinder camera(s), lenses or its accompanying accessories or looking for a used model or any of its system components, please use a separate section with a higher volume of traffic Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. The respective Message Boards are some of the HARDEST hit section of the PIM site, if at any one time, the traffic is high - the table/content may take a while to load the data, just be patience. Hi.. your site is fantastic. This is the first time I am witnessing photos of the Leica M6G, Jaguar and the much hyped HCB model. Lovely effort and hope you can find someone to contribute the missing M.Luther King model as you wish (that will be perfect then).

Thumbs up !

Dear Ian, create site(s) needs accurate info and can be bloody time consuming. I know it can be quite easy to click around the pages but behind development of each site, I guess the time spent on compiling and searching the right resources can even be more tedious. Firstly, not to mislead info seekers and has to be extremely careful. Next, develop sites also requires the right frame of mind to begin a project of such nature. I am just back from Shanghai for a lapse of 2-3 weeks break to see how is the branch office was doing there (MIR has also opened an office in Russia as well as in France lately). Amidst all these development around the Compny, I just couldn't get with the right "flames" inside to re-boot my System for a camera site. Yes. I am working on the Leica IPO model (Leica M6 "Ein Stück Leica") too but you have to wait for a while until I get my mind back to more focus state. I am so sorry Brother.

I read your Leica M6 pages with great interest (I never knew there were so many variants). I have a M6 T with Summicron 50/2 and an adapted 75mm. I guess the classic present good value than the TTL models introduced at later stages as I am not a big fan of flash photography.

Q: I have seen a M6 Ein Stuck model (one with tiny Leica logos on the body cover) in my town retail outlet but have not seen the site uploaded any info. Still under development or completely stalled from here ?

Dear Rick. don't mad at me, I have finally settle for a Contax IIa with a 85mm f/2 lens as featured on the site. I guess I am not ready for Leica but would settle for a compromised German label. Thanks anyway.

Hi, I read with interest the article on the Al Thani photography competition and it's Special edition M6 prize. As mentioned in the article, I was lucky enough to win one of these cameras in 2003 and subsequently auctioned it through Sotherby's where it fetched 13,500 GBP hammer price.

To answer the speculation at the end of the article, my understanding is that the full edition of 16 cameras (one was for sheikh Saud, and 15 for the proposed 15 years of the competition) was manufactured and delivered, with each individually inscribed with each of the winning years. It was interesting to see that 2006 was awarded; and this presumably means that the subsequent years have been awarded. The organisation of the competition has been somewhat chaotic, so it is possible that years have been missed or the first prize has been withdrawn. I suspect that many of the cameras may end up on a storage shelf somewhere in Doha.
Richard

Hi Ying Ting:

The IIIG is the last of the screw-mount Leicas, it was introduced 3 years after the M3 had already come out. This means it is the highest-performance of the screwmount cameras, having a multiple-field, projected-frame viewfinder; it also means that it is relatively rare, because by the time it was introduced, not many people wanted a screw-mount camera any more, so not very many were made compared to the IIIF and IIIC. And, of the ones that were sold, they were more likely to be bought by conservative gentlemen and not by war photographers, and so they tend to have been well taken care of. All of this adds up to a high price for a IIIG compared to other models.

I can't really speak for the I-series cameras because I have never paid very much attention to them, but that in itself may be the answer: although they are uncommon, they are lacking in features that most people want (like a viewfinder, for instance), and so perhaps they do not command a very high price. But as I said, I don't really know what sort of price I would expect one of these to bring.

As for the Exaktas: Ihagee did not make lenses themselves, so there are lenses for the Exakta from a number of German optical houses. Probably the most desirable overall are the ones from Carl Zeiss Jena, though there are some Schneider and Steinheil lenses that are probably just as good. From Carl Zeiss, some that come to mind are the 35/2.8 Flektagon wide angle, the 58/2.0 Biotar fast normal lens, the 75/1.5 Biotar very fast short telephoto, and the 180/2.8 Sonnar fast longer telephoto. The most common "less expensive" lens line for Exaktas were the ones from Hugo Meyer Gorlitz. These tend not to be as sought after as the Zeiss lenses, but some of them are also quite good.

As for the cameras themselves, my favorites are the earlier version of the VXIIa, then the VX, then the later VXIIa, then the VXIIb. The camera was fundamentally similar from the very beginning up through the VXIIb, a run of almost 30 years, with subtle new features added at each step along the way.

Dear All, what are the price variations between IIIG and Ig difference is so much ah ? I was offered a Ig, If as well as an EXTACTA (?) (no lenses). Kinda hard to make up a decision which to buy, I came across another IIIG but it has a such a high price tag. Exacta and Leica are different breed (from what I know). Anyone has knowledge on the "EXTAKA" range and what lenses can I get to fit the camera ?

I have 2 M6s (M6 0.72x Blk) and a Titanium model (classic) with 28mm, 50mm and 90mm f2.0. It is sad that the TTL was not able to use all those lovely LSM lenses. Anyone has a suggestion ? like adapter but still be able to retain the TTL reading ? Technically I suppose it can but not tried.
