Classic rangefinder camera system Series :
Various Rangefinder camera models / RF Lenses - Message Board/Guestbook

This is a new section specifically created for rangefinder system users. I guess users of RF bodies/lenses users have a distinctive taste in their own. Most of all, they are a mix of collectors, photographers, historian etc. who may be having keen interest in the photographic equipment produced during the old days. But I guess most of allm, they are the elite group who are more to appreciative the excellence of mechanical / optical engineering presenting in the rangefinder system made during the older days. As it is rather hard to satisfy everyone intention when it relates to a website as each may have their own preferences on brands or types. Over the years, I have constructed quite a number of sites featuring a series of selective camera models and/or optics but they were all related to Single lens reflex (SLR) systems but not really focused on the rangefinder system yet. So,m technically, the RF-Nikon/Nikkor section is my first attempt. When I first started the site, I simply felt it is so unfair just to concentrate on the Nikon/Nikkor alone as there are so many good photographic systems with other major labels. So, other than my initail effort on the Nikon/Nikor, I am also taking the chance begin compiling some of the other information on other respectful labels as supplementary information for surfers. As there are already many excellent, established resources on the Network on the ame topic , probablyt I don't have to pursue one by one in details but simply confine my own effort within the early series of Nippon Kogaku and Nikkor only but I would also take the opportunity to introduce other equally good photograophic resources from comparing brands. This Message Board was created just for that purpose to patch things that I feel that might be missing in my own PIM site - as well as to provide a gateway for those that were not being featured yet. You may use it for whatever you think / deem suitable - regardless it is questions & answers (Q&A) or just make good use of it to share experience among one another on the rangefinder system. Lastly, as some of the remarks presented herein may be entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal of your equipment. Naturally, you are always encouraged to make good use of this convenience of the MB here to present your own thoughts / views as well. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for any rangefinder camera models and/or optical group of the system, its creator. If your intention is to dispose your Rangefinder camera(s), lenses or its accompanying accessories or looking for a used model or any of its system components, please use a separate section with a higher volume of traffic Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. The respective Message Boards are some of the HARDEST hit section of the PIM site, if at any one time, the traffic is high - the table/content may take a while to load the data, just be patience. If it stalls, just click on the 'Reload' or 'Refresh' button on your browser menu once to re-attempt. Thank you.

I have been looking at prices for M4 bodies and I have seen a dramatic increase from around 900 - 1200 to 1200 - 1800 for clean M4's. One area that I have seen a reduction is in the price of user or not perfect M4 50 Jahre. In theory these should be the most collectible being the last and built in small batches in Germany (and Midland)
Any one have any insight into this?

Hello Robert:

Thank you for that comment! Of course, that is correct - I'll pass this along to the author.

As for a lens adapter: I have seen an adapter to use 50mm Contax lenses on a Leica screw mount body - the adapter has a focusing helical and scale built into it. These were made in England in the early postwar years when import restrictions made new lenses hard to get from Germany. They would probably be rare and expensive items today, and while a Nikon lens would mount up there might be a minor focus error. It's possible that someone could be making a modern copy of the Leica/Contax adapter, but I haven't seen it. I think an adapter in the opposite direction (for Leica lenses on Contax) would be impossible to make.

Rick

I have a question and a comment. The question is whether there exists an adapter that allows Leica screwmount lenses to be used on Nikon rangefinder cameras. Or perhaps Leica lenses on old Contax rangefinders. (I'm aware there's a focus issue.) Does anybody know of any such adapter?

The comment concerns this page:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/RF-Nikkor/RF-Accessories/lens_hood_caps/index1.htm

Partway down the page it shows two Nikon 5 cm lens hoods with cutouts, and asks what the purpose would be. The cutouts let the photographer see through part of the lens hood that would otherwise block the view through the finder/focuser.

Thanks for a great site!

Which viewfinder would you recommend for an Olympus E-P1 rangefinder camera.

I cannot decide in between Zeiss 427 B/L and Nippon Kokagu (Nikon) Varifocal finder

Thanks;

Hakan

Hi BGW:

I'm afraid I've never used a Contax I; here is what it says in "the Contax Way" (H. Freytag 1955):

"To set the shutter of the Contax I, turn the adjusting ring until the required shutter speed group is visible. Bring the appropriate white or red dot, according to whether the speed figure is engraved in white or red, opposite the black index on the front of the camera to select the speed."

Hope this helps, it's all I've got.....

rick

I have a Contax 1 which belonged to my father in law - serial no. begins with 'Z'. I have pretty much worked it out,k except for setting the shutter speed. There seems to be four sections, each with different speeds, and a spring loaded rotating wheel, but I can't get the dots (red and white) to line up properly with the speed markings. Any ideas?
