Classic rangefinder camera system Series :
Various Rangefinder camera models / RF Lenses - Message Board/Guestbook

This is a new section specifically created for rangefinder system users. I guess users of RF bodies/lenses users have a distinctive taste in their own. Most of all, they are a mix of collectors, photographers, historian etc. who may be having keen interest in the photographic equipment produced during the old days. But I guess most of allm, they are the elite group who are more to appreciative the excellence of mechanical / optical engineering presenting in the rangefinder system made during the older days. As it is rather hard to satisfy everyone intention when it relates to a website as each may have their own preferences on brands or types. Over the years, I have constructed quite a number of sites featuring a series of selective camera models and/or optics but they were all related to Single lens reflex (SLR) systems but not really focused on the rangefinder system yet. So,m technically, the RF-Nikon/Nikkor section is my first attempt. When I first started the site, I simply felt it is so unfair just to concentrate on the Nikon/Nikkor alone as there are so many good photographic systems with other major labels. So, other than my initail effort on the Nikon/Nikor, I am also taking the chance begin compiling some of the other information on other respectful labels as supplementary information for surfers. As there are already many excellent, established resources on the Network on the ame topic , probablyt I don't have to pursue one by one in details but simply confine my own effort within the early series of Nippon Kogaku and Nikkor only but I would also take the opportunity to introduce other equally good photograophic resources from comparing brands. This Message Board was created just for that purpose to patch things that I feel that might be missing in my own PIM site - as well as to provide a gateway for those that were not being featured yet. You may use it for whatever you think / deem suitable - regardless it is questions & answers (Q&A) or just make good use of it to share experience among one another on the rangefinder system. Lastly, as some of the remarks presented herein may be entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal of your equipment. Naturally, you are always encouraged to make good use of this convenience of the MB here to present your own thoughts / views as well. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for any rangefinder camera models and/or optical group of the system, its creator. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you. Since this is a non-profitable resource site - The developer of this site reserves the rights to censor or delete any inappropriate, unrelated, misleading or excessively hostile messages posted herein. If your intention is to dispose your Rangefinder camera(s), lenses or its accompanying accessories or looking for a used model or any of its system components, please use a separate section with a higher volume of traffic Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's Guestbook at another new window by clicking on the Guestbook Link.

The respective Message Boards are some of the HARDEST hit section of the PIM site, if at any one time, the traffic is high - the table/content may take a while to load the data, just be patience. If it stalls, just click on the 'Reload' or 'Refresh' button on your browser menu once to re-attempt. Thank you.

Hi David:

The Leica M39 mount did come first, way back in the 1920s; the M42 Contax mount came out in 1948/49. It is possible to use M42 lenses on an M39 Leica with an adapter, but the rangefinder will not be working so you would have to guess-focus the lens... in practice this is not a very satisfying method, so it's not done much. You can also adapt M39 lenses onto an M42 SLR camera, where you will be able to focus .... but only very close up, because the thicker body of the SLR pushes the lens out away from the film much farther than the range of a normal focusing mount. The Leicaflex did not use either the M39 or the M42 screw mount, but a new bayonet mount. With modifications for light meter coupling, this lens is still used on Leica SLRs. And for your last question, Exakta was originally an independent company, located in eastern Germany but owned by a Dutch family. It remained independent for many years even after the War, when other companies were collectivized under the Communist government, and it was not until about 1970 that Exakta was finally rolled into the VEB Pentacon/Praktica organization. Exakta never made lenses, to the lenses for their cameras were made by major German optical houses such as Carl Zeiss (Jena) and Joseph Schneider.

Hi Jess:

The Leica MP is very similar to the M3, but updated: The main differences are the viewfinder - the M3 finder covers lenses from 50 to 135mm with a life-size view, and the MP covers all the way from 28 to 135mm but reduced to 0.72x - and the light meter that's built into the MP, the M3 never had one of those. The MP does not have a self timer, because the meter battery takes up the space where the timer used to be.

Otherwise the camera is very much like the M3, including the knurled rewind knob on top, and it is a beautifully built camera even by Leica standards. The easiest way to tell them apart is by the lack of a self timer lever on the front of the MP.

Dear Mr. Rick: Your friendly invitation has prompted me to ask these few long pending ?? in my mind. I would assume M39 (Leitz) was followed by the M42 larger mount (originated by Leica, Contax OR ??), the lenses and cameras in this sense would not be able to share with the "older" M39 system ? Or possibly via adapters. M42 cameras usually has more gadgets, I supposed. The Leicaflex is using that (M42) as well ? I read your explanation that was a reflex Leica right ? Last Q: Is Exakta a Zeiss company or independent private entity ?

LEICA MP is/was the pro-spec M3. Produced only in very small quantity. It is just like the Nikon SP to the S3. on;y difference is, SP is a full scale model and it was introduced earlier than the S3 (S3 is a scaled down version of the Nikon SP (1956/7), introduced in 1958 to serve users who may not need the full spec of the SP). Sorry, Rick, a quick answer on behalf of you.

I have just found your site (excellent works for a startup effort). I notice the development of the Zeiss had took a pause for the last few weeks, and only to realize later that you have skipped to the Leica instead. I guess this is a fine effort (courageous, I should say). I support your site simply as you have pointed out in your original intention section by "patching a missing link" in the network. The M3 was done splendidly well in such a sequential order but love to add a feature page - It is just a personal suggestion only as I read you will be preparing a site on the new MP soon, I eagerly awaits for such a reality to be cherished.

P.S. I have been to your country many years ago, lovely tropical environment (Penang, Tioman & Cameron Highland).

Dear Gregorry: Thanks for your thoughtful suggestion. Regardless how much the price tag is on MP, it was still a M3 designed for the press. This is far from a good site (lack content writeups). Just intended to maintain it as a visual library - actually that was how the Nikon F series had progressed from the original Pictorial history site and did sections by sections in stages. Let me get a feel first on the Leica/Leitz. There is another section on the Zeiss (personal favourite). Takes time. Once again, thank you for the kind words. P.S. I did re-arranged the Leica MP section makde it easier to navigate between the few rare models.
