Compatibility with Nikkor lenses

The F80 uses the same Nikon F lens mount which gives you access to the vast lineup of Nikkor lenses including a wide range of non-AF Nikkor lenses.

afs80200.jpg (12k) Loading..
However, there are many restriction to use with older Nikkors which I think more like a commercial business decision, for example, when an non-AF AI-Nikkor is use, you can only use them in manual mode and not even operative in aperture priority AE !

* With AI modified, AI and AI-S Nikkor lens, the exposure meter will not work !!

* OFF TOPIC: I consider myself as a simple consumer of electronics. But I am not entirely a blindfolded follower, I have selected Nikon system to be my prime SLR system many years ago. This section was published merely a week after the F80 was announced and detailing the incompatibilities between manual focus Nikkor lenses with the sophistication of electronic used in this very attractive AF SLR from Nikon. I have received many mails doubting my intention and level of truth in my write-ups, but by now, you should know the exact situation. Sometimes, facts suck. As I stated many times, it is very difficult if some of you want to access everything good from a perspective of a pure follower or die-hard Nikon fans without compromising a little for a better judgment what a manufacturer has taken away from us. Facts remain: Our manual AI Nikkor lenses cannot even enjoy bare minimum benefit of metering display with the F80. That is a clear alert in the future commitment to support manual focus optic manufactured by the same company that produce the camera. WAKE UP, PAL ! - If you are feeling stomach upset after reading these, Just go to Nikon's Official Site and tune yourself back to the high spirit of being a Nikon fan. But please don't mail me -

I don't want to sound too sarcastic, but I think it is totally unnecessary for a Company like Nikon to resorting to such a move to force users buy their latest AF Nikkor lenses. Because by doing so, they are putting away all the potential buyers from the huge pool of current Nikon owners who may be looking for a entry AF SLRs "..this one is not for you.., buy a
F100 instead"; further, it has confined the F80 as an absolute starter camera for anyone who might be investing into an SLR camera system for the first time, then the F80 has to stand up against stiff competitions from the like of Canon, Pentax, Minoltas etc.. One thing that Nikon often underestimates is the brand loyalty of their users, business sense will tell you it is easier to convince a satisfied customers to upgrade then to convince a totally new user to invest into something new that he never tried before, especially if the product you are trying to promote has many options and alternatives around.

But nevertheless, to optimize the full benefit of the T80 camera, you have to use it with an AF Nikkor lens. When an AF Nikkor lens is attached, the F80 automatically determines which one it is, and makes the necessary adjustments for 'optimal usage'; which means whatever technologies it embodies inside and the degree of performance is only available with use the camera with an AF Nikkor lens which includes AF-S Nikkor that feature Silent Wave Motors and a new a VR Nikkor lens similar to Canon's EF-IS (Image Stabilizer) that features Vibration Reduction System to minimize image blur caused by camera shake.

Usable lenses with built-in Speedlight: 28mm to 200mm CPU lenses
except AF 20-35mm f/2.8D IF; before using a lens with the built-in Speedlight, take note of the following:

Make sure to remove the lens hood.
With lenses with Macro range, built-in Speedlight cannot be used in the Macro range. Vignetting occurs at the edges of the frame resulting in underexposure with the following zoom lenses, which have limitations in usable focal length or shooting distance: AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED: 35mm focal length at 2m or longer shooting distance; AF 24-50mm f/3.34.5D: 28mm focal length at 1.3m or longer shooting distance; AF 24-120mm f/3.5-5,6D IF: 35mm focal length at 0.8m or longer shooting distance or 50mm or longer focal length; AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED: 50mm focal length at 1.3m or longer shooting distance or 70mm focal length at 0.7m or longer shooting distance; AF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D IF: 28mm focal length at 0.7m or longer shooting distance; AF 35-70mm f/2.8D: 35mm focal length at 1m or longer shooting distance; AF Micro 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6D ED: 70mm and 85mm focal length at 0.82m or longer shooting distance, 105mm at 0.64m or longer shooting distance or 135mm and 180mm at 0.55m or longer shooting distance.
