There are certain confusion as with the total number of the quantity produced. As earlier, Nikon's
original advertisement was portraying only 2000 units will be produced. Obviously, some local collectors in Japan were not too happy when realized there were more unconfirmed units being produced. Eventually, Nikon officially clarified with the total exact numbers being produced, decisively and bravely apologized for created such confusion.

If we used the advertised quantity as an official reference, the F5 anniversary model should be as followed
:

Domestic version: 2000
Foreign version: 1000

The advertisement that ran in Japanese quoted
(Translated by
Hiura Shinsaku):

"Apology and correction: We announced to domestic media that we planned to market the 2000 (limited) of "Nikon F5 - Nikon camera 50th anniversary model" in April 21, 1998. At that time, we did not refer to the fact that the planned number is only for domestic market in Japan and the number of the foreign model has not being decided. Please let us apologize about the incorrect announcement and we hereby correcting the earlier announced quantity of the camera body as"Domestic: 2000 (limited)" and "Foreign: 1000 (limited)".

Note: Seemed like all the Millennium Edition always creating some confusion. Primarily because the Y2K would expect a quantity of 2000 units to "match" the number "year 2000". The Pentax LX Millennium 2000 also having similar confusion. Well, it comes with a matching all chrome SMC 50mm f/1.2 lens with a KA Mount and should sell very well in Japan alone. How I wish the F5A also has its MF-28 Multi-Command back and at least a matching lens. Well, the Pentax has also strangely omitted their innovative FB-1 Interchangeable Finder w/multi-eyepiece system. Well, MUST all LE models come with some regrets ?... Errrr
