Exposure Measurement Both viewfinders for both the FE and FE2 are very similar. With the exception of added few shutter speed values (1/2000 and 1/4000 sec. for the FE2).
But when you activate the exposure compensation, the FE has no warning as in the case of FE2, in which a red +/- warning symbol will be at the right hand side.A pair of silicon photo diodes (SPDs) locates near the eyepiece, inside the pentaprism of the Nikon FE powered a center-weighted exposure measurement with a standard Nikon 60/40 composition. In fact, the metering system works exactly the same with the automatic indexing (AI) featured Nikkormat EL2 which launched just a year ahead of FE (1978) in 1977. The meter reads the light over the entire focusing screen but favors the central 12mm-diameter area, while still taking the entire area into consideration. This allows you to make a fairly precise readings of the selected subject area, and results in more balanced overall exposures. The Nikon EL series, FE series, even the professional F3 and others entry models like EM, FG, FG20 etc. offer both automatic and manual exposure control. The mode of automation offers by all these models are aperture based, that is called aperture priority auto. Meaning, you select the aperture (Corresponding with the effect of the depth of field yields and the camera electronic/quartz (Depends on models, the FE is electronically timed, while the FE-2 is quartz timed) time computer circuitry will, based on the meter reading, to select the appropriate shutter speed to match your selection of aperture value to form a theoretical perfect exposure. In manual mode, just like the fully mechanical Nikon F, F2 (With option to go shutter priority automation), the FT (Other than the Nikkormat FS, which has no meter) and the newer FM and FM(n), you select both aperture and shutter speed settings with the aid of the camera built in meter to "propose" the recommended exposure. You then mix, based on the suggested reading to determine a preferred combination that fits your needs.
Relative: Shutter Speeds / Aperture / Depth Of Field
All these possible combinations or essential key information will present inside the viewfinder (Not quite true sometimes). The FE/FMs' viewfinders show the approximate area of 93% of the actual image field (Only the Professional models (F, F2, F3, F4 and F5) offer virtual 100% image. Inside the fairy bright viewfinder image (With 0.86X magnification).
It offer three types of focusing aids in terms of interchangeable focusing screens, indicate the f/stop selected, show the shutter speed recommended, and indicate the mode in use (Aperture-Priority or Manual) through a very colorful but not distracting exposure information panel at the left hand side. Note: Picture shown at the left are the original EL and the FE. The FE panel has a 'B' in addition to the 'M' (M90) setting. The needle will rest will you have set your shutter speed dial to 'B'.In the center of the top viewfinder info, there is a tiny window displaying the selected aperture. This is called the ADR (Aperture Direct Readout) window.
Notice a tiny window just above the lens mount ? This window (1) will relay the aperture value you select on your Nikkor lens (2) to the viewfinder. How does this work ? I am too lazy to draw a fresh illustration, you can check the optical path for the Nikon F3 and see how it works. Note just follow the trails of the yellow line near the lens.
