  1. From Leonard (Sun Mar 7 13:14:14 1999 ):
I don't simply use facts retrieved from the Net to act as a reference. IF I do, there is no necessity to create a site then. FM-10 & FE-10 are products of Nikon - regardless whether it is true that they are outsourcing external production facilities to produce them. While that was their preference while my concern is to see a consumer's interest is protected with a better product value and quality. Each has his own priorities, I supposed. The lines here may create some stomach upsets and that is too unfortunate.

  2. From Sergio Azenha (Sun Mar 7 07:07:38 1999 ):
As you comment on this site, the FM10 and FE10 seem to be too much of a compromise concearning the rest of the FE family. Why - you ask - didn't Nikon include TTL flash when they were the leaders in that area? Well, it's actually simple to explain... Both the FM10 and the FE10 were made for Nikon by COSINA so Nikon didn't have much to say on the camera's design. Actually, apart from the advantage of featuring the F mount ("metallic"), the FM10 and FE10 are basically the same as the COSINA C1... Maybe I somehow missed it but I was a bit suprised that you don't mention this fact in your site... Anyway, congratulations on this great site!!! I'll buy the FE2 or FA as soon as I can get my hands on either one of these babies! :) regards, Sergio Azenha

  3. From bitterboy (Sat Mar 6 03:19:08 1999 ):
Hi all my fellow FE2 users... I have held on to the FE2 my Dad gave me years ago and really would like to start using it again. But the Rewind mechanism has "popped" out of the body. Due to that piece being removed, I cannot open the back of the camera. Anyone have a suggestion on how to open the back? Thanks! remove /DIESPAM/ to email me...

  4. From photine (Fri Mar 5 05:55:14 1999 ):
Bought used Nikon FE. Has no manual with it. Does anyone know of where I can obtain FE manual or copy of one? Would appreciate any info available. Also, is there any way to tell by serial number how old the camera is ? thanks

  5. From Walter (Fri Mar 5 05:23:48 1999 ):
I opened Yahoo one day and typed Nikon FE which brought me to this site. Excellent! For years I've been looking for a more detailed repair manual of the FE to include wiring diagram of the electronics. Anyone out there knows a source? Thanks.

  6. From Bob Friend (Fri Mar 5 05:06:27 1999 ):
My Nikon FE is broken. It seems to need a "FRE Unit", but the manager of Professional Camara Repairs in NYC told me he couldn't find one anywhere. Does anyone know where I might find one. I'd hate to have this camera die.

  7. From Russ (Tue May 11 05:22:16 1999 ):
What a nice site to find...I have recently obtained an FE Nikon (no manual or instructions) and I'm a relative novice about cameras. I am looking for a telephoto lens for general close-up photos, but lens compatability to this camera is confusing. I've been searching some of the online auction sites (ie., E-bay) and there are thousands of lenses. I want to make sure that the one I bid on will fit. Any answers, or does anyone know of a reference manual or chart or something to refer to...Thanks in advance! :-)

  8. From Tony Kiburis (Fri May 7 07:24:23 1999 ):
This is a really great site; it answered questions I've had about my Nikons for years. Great job!! If anyone needs an FE manual I will xerox copy my original & forward it to you at cost plus shipping.

  9. From Andy Welch (Wed May 5 03:30:52 1999 ):
I just bought a Nikon FE at a yard sale this weekend. I have had a couple of other Nikon cameras. This is a great site since I did not get an operations manual with the FE. The only little problem is that the ASA locking ring button is stuck down. The ring spins around and won't lock down. I went to a camera repair shop and the guy told me to put a little piece of tape on there. Does anyone know what the problem might be?? Broken spring??? What's that cost to repair??? Should I just use the piece of tape. Thanks

  10. From wyn palmer (Thu Apr 29 07:30:19 1999 ):
I want to use my old nikon FE with a telescope for astronomical photography. Does anyone out there have any experience in using the camera in this role. Thanx. Wyn Palmer

  11. From Robert (Tue Apr 27 02:42:22 1999 ):
GREAT SITE !!!!!! I've been repairing nikons for 20 years and find your site to very informative for everyone. I also may have picked up a few customers with broken Nikons, as I can fix them all. Even when parts are no longer available.

  12. From xiang (Sun Apr 25 05:21:21 1999 ):
I am very happy to find this good page about FE's. I have a question about the exposure compensation of FE10. I read "The exposure compensation are using the FE2's standard scale of +- 2 stops and with 1/3 increments for fine tuning exposure (when you are in auto mode). " Does that mean that in manual exposure mode there's no way to make exposure compensation with 1/3 increments? If not, is there such a Nikon manual camera that lets me do this? I know this is possible with my N70, but N70 lacks multiple exposure, depth preview, etc, and that's the main reason I am looking into an manual camera as a back up. Thanks for any help!

  13. From victor ramirez (Mon Apr 12 12:49:13 1999 ):
I am a geologist from colombia, so I need to go outdoors and gather a lot of information, including of course photographs. I have found the FE very tough for the weather and field conditions. I own also a 28-205mm vivitar lens, and I would like to have a leather case for my camera suitable for such a big lens. I some knows, please e-mail me. thanks

  14. From Steve Howard (Sat Apr 10 09:20:30 1999 ):
Having owned several Nikon cameras, 3 FMs, 2 FM2s, 2 FEs, a F3, and presently a F3HP and 2 FE2s, I must comment on my favorite. The Nikon FE2. I have taken my Nikons in -35 degree to 120 degree climates. All have worked as expected. The sharpest photographs have been with the FE2s and not with the F3HP. The FE2 balances, is most attractive and always works. They are easy to manually compensate and fill flash is easy thanks to the high sync speed. The focusing screens are brighter than even the F3HP. My lens lineup is: 24mm, 50 mm f2, 50 mm f1.4, 100 2.8 E, 500 Mirror. No zooms as the sharpness of the bodies show the shortcomings of the zoom Nikors. My wish? How about a digital back for the FE2/FM2 body at a reasonable price? Steve Howard

  15. From dave Lawson (Sat Apr 10 01:15:53 1999 ):
I just bought a FE-10 kit two weeks ago. I have been using an older Practika system for several years and finally decided to upgrade. I am very happy that I skipped the autofocus temptation and went manual. So far, three rolls of film later, I am impressed with the metering, handling backlit shots fairly well. I just wish it was metal. I am leery of handling it the same way as my old Practika which is built like a tank. Keep up the good work here...I appreciate the review. I can't disagree with your comments but I definitely like the camera. Just for reference, the kit cost CDN$ 440, including a 35-70 lens.

  16. From Dario Silva, Portugal (Fri Apr 9 08:18:05 1999 ):
Great soft camera. Despite owning a F90 & F3, I wanted to try somethimg lighter. FE really is it!

  17. From Thomas Bieszk (Wed Jun 9 14:46:24 1999 ):
I think that the Nikon FE system is one of the best systems that Nikom has produced. I currently own and use on daily basis; 3-FE bodies, 3-MD-12 mmotor drives, the following Nikkor lenses; 28/F2.8, 35/F2.8, 50/F1.4, 85/F11.8, 105/F2.5, 135/F3.5, 200/F4, 300/F4.5 EDIF, 400/F5.6 ED, 500/F8N Mirror...I have used them for over 20 years professonallly shooting weddings and anything else I could make money at. I never had a break down of any kind.

  18. From Gene Van Horne (Sun Jun 6 11:22:24 1999 ):
Can someone help me locate a replacement case for my FE? I have an original which has disintegrated totally, almost like a dry rot. I have looked around but have been unable to find a substitute. I'd appreciate your tips on where to look. Thanks.

  19. From David Borrington (Sat Jun 5 04:43:18 1999 ):
Having just purchased a second hand FE2 I need to protect it from the English weather. Does anyone know which ever-ready case fits? I see some CF and CS series cases advertised but dealers don't seem to know which fits. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me.

  20. From Chris Berriman (Tue Jun 1 16:50:56 1999 ):
Sorry, misprint on the previous e-mail address. I have just got my FE2 out of the cupboard after a couple of years of not being used. However, the light-meter is not working , I guess it may just need calibrating. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this at home or does it need doing by a dealer? Or could the problem be something else? Thanks in advance Chris

  21. From slavko (Thu May 27 02:28:05 1999 ):
Excellent site.My congratulations. My problem is that I just bought an FE2, but without the manual book. Could anyone help?

  22. From W. Amerine (Wed May 26 00:12:49 1999 ):
My FE does not indicate that the meter is working properly. Does any one have Responsible repair shop that I might send the camera to. Thank you.

  23. From Peter S (Thu May 20 08:00:39 1999 ):
My congratulations on an excellent site. It took me awhile to locate an original FE2 manual and I finally found one through the auctions on eBay. However, the FE2 information on your site is so extremely thorough and so complete, it certainly carried me over. I have black FE2 and Nikkormat FTN bodies, with 50mm f/2, 24mm f/2.8, and 105mm f/2.5 lenses. Although I love both cameras my primary one is the FE2. Since I 'dropped out' of photography for awhile, I picked up all this equipment used. The black FE2 is near mint and was a great buy especially since I bought it after during a search through the internet (sight unseen ... if you can believe it!). I considered an F3 but when you compare features of the 'base' cameras, I think the FE2 is of equal performance, if not superior in some aspects (flash sync. speed). Comments? I took the FE2 and had it checked-out at a camera repair shop and everything was right on. The only defect I noticed is that the film speed dial (under the rewind knob) does not 'sit flat' to the camera body on one side. It is like a spring 'popped' and one side floats up slightly. The repair man, said this was nothing to worry about and recommended to just leave it alone. Is this common among FE2's? Anyone else observe this?

  24. From Nancy (Sun May 16 08:46:57 1999 ):
Thank you for having a more informative site than Nikon themselves. You've helped me decide that I should get an FE10 for DOF preview and to carry a third film type along with my FG and N70.

  25. From Suha Ataoguz (Sat May 15 07:08:06 1999 ):
Let me congrats you ... Excellent and unique site on the net concerning Nikon FE series cameras , I still using Nikon FE with ori.50/1.8 lens and Vivitar Series 1 28-90 zoom lens. I have Minolta XD-7 also but mostly I use my Nikon FE ... I downloaded all your pdf files, thank you very much and greetings frm Istanbul.

  26. From Bruce Sanborn (Fri May 14 09:07:42 1999 ):
An amazing site! Thanks for being here! I recently picked up an FE2 with a Vivitar 28-70 zoom at a garage sale with the thought of reselling it. After running a couple rolls of film through it, decided it's a keeper! I'll probably sell off some of my Olympus stuff to finance some lenses, (especially after finding an FG at another garage sale last weekend!). Didn't get a manual with the FE2, this site helps enormously in getting to know the camera.

  27. From Ian Booth (Fri Jun 18 21:42:31 1999 ):
My 15 year old FE has an intermittent shutter problem (it jams open at higher speeds and can only be closed by turning to 'B' setting - new batteries improve things slightly for a while) - has anybody else encountered this? I still think it is a great camera but WHY don't Nikon release an "FE3" with a spot metering function? For me, this would be the PERFECT camera. Ian Booth

  28. From Lars (Fri Jun 18 16:39:10 1999 ):
Eric - I don't your particular flash (does it was all the connections?) but the LED (lightning bolt) could simply be broken. This is the case with the exp. comp. LED in my FA - the exp. comp. work fine though. Why don't you see if it lights up with a dedicated (Nikon) TTL-flash in a shop?! Sergio - get yourself a robust workhorse like the FE2 and get this FE10 out off your mind! Dave - I have been thinking about a logging system for the field. A little pocket taperecorder would come handy but then there is the trouble transcribing. I am seriously thinking about getting a PalmPilot for the purpose - You would be able to transfer the data directly to a database in your desktop - it is also a usefull toy for many other things ;)!

  29. From Dave Neiman (Fri Jun 18 02:50:51 1999 ):
Anyone have information on where one might download a photographer's log? I'm looking for a way to easily log my shots, date, time, location, pertinent exposure information, subject, etc..... Any help would be appreciated.

  30. From Sergio (Fri Jun 18 02:24:00 1999 ):
Hi, I have been looking for a nikon fe 10 but have had no luck finding one...can anyone help me with my dilema.... well everyone keep clicking away.. thanx...

  31. From Lars (Thu Jun 17 03:33:02 1999 ):
Hi Jeff - SB-15 is a great handy little flash. I use it all the time with the TTL Remote Cord SC-17 to get it off the camera. I also diffuse it with a little white plastic bag.

  32. From Jeff (Tue Jun 15 05:08:42 1999 ):
I just acquired a FE2 and now want to take advantage of its TTL flash metering. What flashes are best for this camera? I've tried to find information on SB-15, SB-16B, SB-22,Sunpak 266d, 422d, and 433d. I'd like to keep the price down but still have TTL fill flash capabilities. Help! Please.

  33. From Eric Bogaerts (Tue Jun 15 03:29:55 1999 ):
I have purchased an off-brand flash unit for my FE2 (vivitar 550fd) and I have encountered a puzzle that I cannot figure out. The FE2 is suppose to give a 'lightning bolt' within the viewfinder when the exposure and other relevant information is ready for TTL flash. I have not seen this 'bolt' within my viewfinder. The flash ready light does illuminate, however. Does this mean that my FE2's TTL flash metering is defective? Or is this simply what an off brand TTL flash does to the FE2? Anyone who can help??

  34. From Jim Lee (Sat Jun 12 01:11:14 1999 ):
I'm going to be looking at a used FE that the owner rates at "EX+". (Asking price of $195) Can any of you experienced FE users give some tips about what to look for when evaluating this camera? Actually I suppose I should say what to "look out" for in terms of problems, etc. How can I (very much an amateur) determine if I'm being taken down the merry path"? Thanks in advance. Jim

  35. From EEwyn (Thu Jun 10 10:30:18 1999 ):
Dave, the Nikon FE is fully compatible with the current and BRIGHTER E2 screen that designed for the FM-2n (With small exposure compensation): http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fefmshared/html/screens.htm

  36. From Dave Neiman (Thu Jun 10 09:20:23 1999 ):
THANK YOU! This is a wonderful site, complete, definitive and thorough. I have owned and enjoyed an FE for almost 20 years and still go back to it on a daily basis as backup. HELP: I would like to find a TYPE E focusing screen and rubber eye piece for my FE. Can anyone help me with these items?

  37. From Dave Neiman (Fri Jun 25 21:39:28 1999 ):
Lars: Thanks for the response. Yes, I have used a small tape recorder and they work well, but I keep forgetting to take the damned thing along. I'm putting together a log sheet for field use now. Dave

  38. From Alan (Fri Jun 25 20:49:38 1999 ):
I have a 20 year old Nikon FE camera. I have used both Nikon and Vivitar lenses in the past. Are there any lenses made by anyone today that will work with it? Please let me know. Thanks !!!!!

  39. From Du Wei (Thu Jun 24 02:57:57 1999 ):
I used my Nikon FE once without battery. Though the shutter worked but the film never got exposed. Can any one explain? Thank! Please answer to my personal email.

  40. From Lars (Sat Jun 19 22:10:53 1999 ):
Steven - yes you need the right adapter. Tamron have got several website where you can learn more about this. Here is a nice listing af Japaneese Photography manufacturers: http://photojpn.org/DIR/manu.html

  41. From Steven (Sat Jun 19 21:30:55 1999 ):
Thanks Lars re: my question on the old Tamaron manual lens. If I understand all this, which I probably don't, I need to find/buy an AI adapter mount, correct? Is that readily available? Thanks.

  42. From Lars (Sat Jun 19 16:40:47 1999 ):
Steven - FE2 will need an AIs, AI or AI-modified coupling. Take a look @ http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/nikonfmount/lens2.htm to see what coupling your Tamron has. To all you guys wanting to buy - Why don't you use the "Free Trading Zone" @ http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/ instead of this board!

  43. From Kerry Reeves (Sat Jun 19 10:15:48 1999 ):
I want to buy a good working databack for a Nikon FE. I believe it is model MF-12. please contact me if you have one for sale.

  44. From Kerry Reeves (Sat Jun 19 10:12:30 1999 ):
I want to buy a databack for a Nikon FE. I believe it is model MF-12. The databack needs to work well.

  45. From Steven (Sat Jun 19 06:32:06 1999 ):
Will an Older Tamron 28mm f2.8 manual Lens work on my FE2?

  46. From Lars (Fri Jun 18 23:58:51 1999 ):
UOOOPS ! It should have been "Eric - I don't *know* your particular flash (does it *have* all the connections?)" To Ian - Nikon does not seem to be very interested in manual focus cameras or lenses anymore (the range of MF lenses is shrinking!). I guess it is the market place.. I agree that an FE3 would be great but the next camera in the FE series will probably be an FE20... and it wont have a spot meter... ;-)

  47. From Marshall (Sun Jul 4 12:06:06 1999 ):
I have a used Nikon FE. I recently took it in for repairs. The camera will not lock on Auto and the repair shop says the parts for the lock are no longer available. Also, when taking pictures, the exposure needle responds only to the f-stop settings and seems disconnected from the shutter speed settings. Because of that, I am forced to guess whether my shutter speeds are correct or not. I am usually wrong. I would like to know if it is possible to find the parts for the Auto lock. Also, will fixing the Auto lock connect the shutter speed to the exposure needle or do I need something else? Please help. I am wasting a bundle trying to guess at the proper shutter speed.

  48. From Pierre Grunberger (Sat Jul 3 04:41:39 1999 ):
I am a french bowmaker. I need to make photos of bows with my Nikon FE. I would like to find some "bagues macros" (I dont know the english name for these !). If someone have it, please contact me.
