  1. From Richard Moore (Wed Oct 20 10:31:34 1999 ):
I have a Nikon FE camera and was wondering if anyone has found a camera case that will fit the camera and the stock 50 mm lens. I had one a few years ago until I had it out in a soaking florida rainstorm. Also, I guess the foam on the camera is turning into dust, could anyone recomend a good camera shop who can repair it. Please respond via e-mail, as I won't have web accesss after today... Thank you.

  2. From k (Wed Oct 20 06:38:29 1999 ):
my batteries seem to be fine in my FE2, but when i change the shutter speed i see the green bar on light meter move. yet when i change the aperature on an ais or af lens, the black bar doesn't move at all, so it can't meet up with the green bar for the correct exposure. any suggestions? please help!

  3. From Alex. (Tue Oct 19 18:23:59 1999 ):
Were all FE2s manufactured with the honeycomb titanium shutter or were there some early/late models which came with a different shutter design?

  4. From S. Fitzpatrick (Mon Oct 18 14:54:32 1999 ):
On the Nikon FE series, when you set the shutter speed setting to automatic, is this setting steples, in half stops or just as marked on the dial?

  5. From Eric (Sun Oct 17 05:48:09 1999 ):
I am curious to a certain function on my FE2. If someone who has a FE2 and a Nikon TTL flash could e-mail me, I'd appreciate it.

  6. From Perumal (Mon Oct 11 10:24:38 1999 ):
My FE2's shutter keeps locking even after the shutter button is released. But this does not happen in B mode. I've asked Nikon authorised repairer, Shiro about this and was told that it will costly to repair. Sometimes, this does not happen and smoetimes yes. Do you have any advice. I do not wish to get rid of this camera bought in 1984. Thank you.

  7. From Pablo Velasco (Tue Nov 9 03:15:54 1999 ):

  8. From Jane (Fri Nov 5 01:25:31 1999 ):
Can I use a Tamron MF28-200mm F/3.8-5.6Aspherical lens or any other AF and MF lenses on the Nikon FE10? Which lens is better to be use on the FE10, AF or MF lenses? Any friends out there please respond to this new beginner of the photography world, thanks.

I have a Nikon FE purchased in 1978. I am looking for a MD-12 motor drive and a SB-16 flash (or is it SB-15?). Anyone know where I might purchase these reasonably?

  11. From Kym (Mon Nov 1 19:21:42 1999 ):
Hi, I have just purchased an FE and have a couple of questions. Firstly, the camera has no manual, does anybody know where to get one, either in PDF format on the 'net or an original in Australia? Secondly, is it possible to find out the year of manufacture if I have have the serial number? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a Nikon FE2 in excellent condition. Does anyone know where I can find a good deal on one? Please advise. I am in New York City. Thanks. (mooca2@aol.com)

  13. From michael meyer (Thu Oct 28 22:23:28 1999 ):
a good telephoto? what stipulations? for travel? high speed? for portraiture? super long? think of how you intend to use the lens, this will help you find a "good" telephoto for your uses. that said, here are some recommendations based upon my own experiences. all lenses i mention are either ai or ais designated. 85mm f2 great alaround short tele. i use it for documentary work in a very dark poetry venue. even wide open it is great. and the bokeh of the lens is one of the nicest i have found. decent for portraits, tho some like something a bit longer... 105 f2.5 another great lens. one many a photojournalist has sworn to. i only shot with my granfather's briefly, but the pics were nice. i know many friends (i am at a photo school) who love this lens for portraiture. 135 f2.8 i used the old non ai version of this lens. it is big and heavy. great images, but the weight was a hindrance for me. (for my brief stint in the canon FD system, the 135 f3.5 was great, maybe the nikon equivilant is just as nice?) 200 f4 this lens is great. light and compact for its focal length. it could focus a bit closer, but it isn't really a macro lens. still nice for portraiture, throwing everything nicely out of focus wide open. one of the two two telephoto lenses i would keep in a minimal system (the other being an 85 f2) hope that helps. -mnm

    M. Kineer - I would try using a crochet hook. It might help if you study how the mechenism looks like on an OK body (with open door).

  17. From jacob Horwitz (Tue Nov 23 08:08:12 1999 ):
I looking for a high quality used camera in the range of 200-500 dollars (with one lens) and a Light meter with needle and numbers so that one can tell if the light calls for a little above or below a given stop or speed (not + and - system) Can any one tell me which Nikons fit these qualifications, and which nikon with in these in your favorate.

  20. From JWoods (Mon Nov 15 10:56:42 1999 ):
You can use here as a guide for the MD-12 Motor Drive Contacts, however, this link is for the MD-15/Nikon FA which has an additional contact to let the MD-15 power the camera just like the Nikon F3: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfa/md15.htm

  21. From pawel (Mon Nov 15 07:21:38 1999 ):
I want to know something about the four electric contacts at the bottom of the camerabody, I know that they are used for conecting the motor drive, but which pin is exactly for what? (I study electronic...)

  22. From Dave Stearns (Sun Nov 14 00:16:43 1999 ):
I've read with interest several postings referring to the shutter sticking problems with the FE2. Once the shutter sticks it only releases when placed in the M250 mode. I bought my FE2 new in '87 and since then I've had the camera "fixed" by local repair shops twice, but the problem always returns within using several rolls of film. Before I junk the camera can anyone help. The batteries are new, is it a "FRE metering unit" problem? Is this a consistent problem with this camera? On a positive note - great site.

  23. From Lars (Sat Nov 13 01:04:57 1999 ):
Hi Gerrad! I just made a little links page on repair stuff - good luck; http://www.zi.ku.dk/personal/lhhansen/repair.htm

Hi ! I'am looking for service manual info on the net(pictures, scamatic drawings and stuff) Ilove to fix things and my Fe is really sick and needs repair.and no one would take care of it as well as i can. Hell Ive had it longer than my wife. Any info would be much appreciated."G"man

  26. From Chris (Thu Nov 11 05:13:20 1999 ):
I have a 1978/80 FE. I am having service work done to replace the light seals. I am a novice and I wanted to know if this service work is common. I would also like to know how much this camera is worth as it is a very special gift from my late father. It is in excellent condition (except for the light seals) as it was used very little in the interviening 20 years. Any information would be greatly appreacited.

  27. From JWoods (Thu Dec 16 10:24:04 1999 ):
To be fair, the FM2n film advance lever is only act as a shutter release lock and the meter on is actually using the shutter release button (light press to activate and shut off in around 16 sec). The Nikon FE film advance lever functions as a BOTH. When you flip the lever out from the camera body - it releases the shutter release button and as well as acting as a meter-on switch. BUT there is NO auto-shut off feature in the FE (Neither the FM). So if the lever is keep at 'standy' position, battery power will keep draining until it it completely depleted. Confusing ? May be. If I can still recall, prior to the Nikon EM in 1979 (20 seconds duration) or the Nikon F3 in 1980 (16 sec), none of the Nikon camera models have a AUTO power-off feature. Hope this helps. So, for those who uses the FM, FE or any of the Nikkormats may have to pay a little attention to that, anyway, the good news is - If I am correct, there were only two Nikon models that do not have a mechanical back up speed to spare and at least your cmera will still works if the battery is downed.

  28. From Howard Passman (Wed Dec 15 19:26:22 1999 ):
Good Morning Jim, There are many good camera repair shops out there but it depends on where you are. I live in the Washington D.C. area and use Mora Camera Service. They pretty much just do repairs(specialize in Nikon)and have been in D.C. many years. Their number is 202-362-9866. Personally I had the advance lever lock defeated in my FM2N by the folks at Mora. I had been out of the "business" (hobby) for many years and when I purchased the FM2n the lock was constantly aggravating me. It was especially in my way if I turned the camera 90 degrees. I just didn't like the lever sticking out. Anyway, I had it defeated but I do not have any problem with batteries. I really don't think that is your problem. Have you noticed if your meter ever shuts off? It could be the timing circuit that holds the meter on for a defined number of seconds after you release your finger from the shutter button. Or if the meter never turns off it could be the mechanical contact on the shutter button that activates the timing circuit but that is not as likely. A good repair shop should be able to fix it but it depends on what is causing it as to how much it would cost. Good Luck.

  29. From KirkG (Mon Dec 13 21:14:35 1999 ):
Nikon FE's main power switch is at the film advance lever. After use, just push in against the camera body and it will turn all power off. Pull out to turn the camera meter on.

  30. From Jim Puckett (Mon Dec 13 10:02:50 1999 ):
I have a Nikon series FE camera. I'm having a problem in getting my camera to shut off when I'm done with it, thus draining my camera batteries. I've been told that the problem is a circuit problem which can no longer be fixed. Is this true and can you direct me to someone who can repair this fine camera? Thank you for your assistance, Jim

  31. From JIM GIRON (Mon Dec 13 01:04:51 1999 ):
Guys, Just wanted to let you know how gratefull I am to you for putting up this web site. I just got my FE from a friend last friday and was surfing for info on the unit due to the absence of the manual. Again....Thanks

  32. From Jim (Sun Dec 12 01:15:23 1999 ):
I have had several FE's over the years, and love them. I just gave my last one to my son, and right away the shutter acted up. I got it fixed for him. Here is the scenario. There are two major problems I am aware of which cause the shutter to act up.. 1; the mirror foam gets old, and gets in the shutter blades, along with some glue perhaps which held it to the body. Now the shutter has to be removed and soaked to clean it . The other problem can be old lubrication, which gets on the shutter servo and makes it stick.. After I gave my camera to my son , I bought another one from a guy over on phot.net/photo. It was labeled Ugly, hideous, and pathetic. I worked on it some, then took it to the repairman in town who does my work out of his home.. This is the camera which had foam in the shutter blades.. I have other Nikons, FA, FM, FTN2 Nikkormat, and a 8008S but can't live without the FE, THe ugly pathetic FE is now my constant companion going with me everywhere.

  33. From Betsy (Tue Dec 7 23:25:36 1999 ):
I was beginning to think I had the only "lemon" FE. It has been repaired 3 times for shutter sticking, now the curtain is stuck. Any advice on what to do with this camera. I have all the lenses and flash attachments and don't really want to replace it. Help.

  34. From leofoo (Wed Dec 1 15:58:43 1999 ):
#Lars, my friend#: Mirror Lock Up on the FE-10 ? No. In fact, the Nikkormats (Any of the Mechanical FT or any the Electronic EL models) were the last batch of Nikon mid-price bodies (Other than the pro F-bodies) that still have MLU feature (with only the FT3 and EL2 provided with AI-spec and thus can fetch a higher premium than other Nikkormat models). The FM, FE and FA 'replaced' the MLU with a self timer design that will flip-up before it starts the self-timer operation in a way also will serve the same purpose IF you think MLU's main function is to minimize mirror vibration for available light high magnification works, astro-photography or other technical applications. There are a couple of Nikkor lenses (OP Nikkor and a few older version of Fisheyes) may require MLU in order to mount the lens onto the camera body and usually it requires a seperate attached-on viewfinder Not particularly for focusing but only use it for composition since the viewfinder will black out with the mirror being lock upwards.

  35. From Lars (Wed Dec 1 00:07:47 1999 ):
Does FE10 have pseudo-MLU? That is; does the mirror flip up right after the shutter is tripped when using the self timer? Best regards,

  36. From scott boylen (Tue Nov 30 05:00:18 1999 ):
I have also owned an FE 2 for approx. 8 years now. I have had trouble with the shutter sticking on mine a number of times and it will only work at M250. I have had it repaired twice in the past and it is currently sticking. I am on the verge of getting rid of it, though I have loved using the camera. I have already bought a F3p to go with the F3hp I have been shooting for almost 10 years. If anyone has some advice for avoiding or repairing this problem myself please send it my way (iowasboy@yahoo.com). Thanks, get message board.

  37. From John (Tue Dec 28 08:45:33 1999 ):

  38. From JeffA. (Mon Dec 27 00:07:19 1999 ):
Linus, Thanks-got the camera operational and gave it to my son for Christmas.

  39. From david G (Fri Dec 24 17:13:56 1999 ):
24 December 99 I have lost the winder mechanism for my Nikon FE and would like to now the easiest way to buy one quickly. Any help greatly appreciated.

  40. From Gordon Derk (Thu Dec 23 08:15:03 1999 ):
I have a wonderful FE that has developed a problem I hope someone can help me with. I used the self timer for the first time in several years and the shutter never did fire. Now the shutter will not work. I have reset it using B and M90 and it fires but as soon as I go to use it on another setting it will not fire. It is like the timer is still waiting to fire the shutter. Any advice would be apreciated.

  41. From Linus (Wed Dec 22 16:18:37 1999 ):
Jeff, not sure if your FE is the same as my FE2. If it is, it should be quite simple to put back together. I believe you're missing a small metal piece that acts as a hinge when you flip the rewind crank up. Basically the crank goes thru' the plastic knob and the hinge piece fits in a small hole at the end of the crank. This is then held in place by the washer with tab piece followed by the spring and the whole lot threads onto the film spool retainer and screws on. It's a little fiddly if you have large fingers but not impossible. Give it a go, but first make sure you have all the parts (especially the hinge). Cheers

  42. From J. Ramón Palacios (Wed Dec 22 03:46:38 1999 ):
I have been a Nikon user since a gorgeous Nikomat (Nikkormat is the US) was placed in my hands by my father. Before that I had used Reflex Korell, Brownie, Voigtlander, Exa and Exakta. Nothing compares to the quality, fell and ease to use of a Nikon. I have later tried Canon, Olympus, Yashica and Minolta. Nice followers, but .... I have upgraded my Nikomats and bought two FE2 bodies with MD12 winders, later a N8008s and now I am the extremely happy owner of F4s, planning to buy soon a couple of F5 bodies and some Silent Wave lenses. It is a joy to have these splendid site for reference and historical source. Thank you for the love and dedication and the great service to us the Nikon fans.

  43. From Jeff A. (Mon Dec 20 03:46:24 1999 ):
I have a FE that is in good shape, but the rewind crank was turned in the wrong direction and the mechanism came apart. I don' think that it is broken and just needs to put back together properly. There are 4 parts: the crank, it's plastic rewind, a small spring and a small metal fitting that looks like a washer with a tab with 2 angles attached to it.I would be most grateful if someone could guide me on how those parts are put back together.I'd like my son to become the second generation to use this camera.

  44. From Lars (Sun Dec 19 03:50:35 1999 ):
Christine you might want to check this site on buying Nikon SLRs.

  45. From Lars (Sat Dec 18 23:48:56 1999 ):
Christine - FE is an excellent choice! Both EM and FE are AI-compatible. FE will even take unmodified pre-AI lenses due to its retractable METER COUPLING LEVER. Therefore FE has even better lens compatibility than EM. EM has a more advanced AUTO flash (with SB-E and SB-19) however.

  46. From Christine (Sat Dec 18 23:37:43 1999 ):
I'm a 9th grader in high school and would like to buy a camera that is compatible with my parents EM, so that we can share lenses. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas about what to buy. Would like to keep the price range under 200 dollars if possible. I have done a little bit of research and have found out that the FE is similar to the EM, but would like to know if it is totally compatible. Thank you for any input.

  47. From Lars (Tue Jan 11 17:43:10 2000 ):
Haz - FE does NOT support TTL flash. SB-18 will however work on TTL mode with FG and shutter speed is automatically set to fastest syncro on P and A mode but to the manually set shutter on M mode if it is slower than fastest syncro.

  48. From Haz (Sun Jan 9 22:24:25 2000 ):
Will a Nikon SB-18 Speedlight work on TTL mode with an FE or FG? If so, is shutter speed set automatically when aperture is selected? Thanks.

  49. From Peter (Sat Jan 8 10:16:36 2000 ):
I have a Nikon FE2 which works perfectly with one exception--I can't turn the light meter off. The automatic shutoff is not working. I think my only recourse is to take the battery out between photo shoots, which is a real inconvenience. Any ideas would be much appreciated!! Thanks.

  50. From Jim Giron (Fri Jan 7 21:30:26 2000 ):
Hello, I have some questions here that maybe you can help me out on. 1. I just bought a used FE with serial number 3613400. Can you tell me when this was manufactured or how old the unit is. 2. A flash unit came with the camera and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to properly use it. Just in case you can give me some pointers on auto mode or if anyone has a manual for the unit. The flash unit is a NATIONAL PE-250S. Thanks a million and more power, Jim99
