Gina, another thing to consider is that the Canon's outer casing is plastic as opposed to the Nikon's use of metal (this is from memory so correct me if I'm wrong). Natalie, a FE, FE2, or any similar, aperture preferred Nikon, for that matter, would make a great beginner camera. They have enough automation to make fast-moving subjects easy to photograph, and have manual exposure modes for those times when you want to be creative.

  2. From Natalie (Wed Nov 15 11:32:26 2000 ):
Hi. I am a beginning photographer who would like to invest in a good, dependable camera. As I am completely inexperienced I need a bit of advice on which Nikon camera is best for my needs. I am looking to shoot mostly in black and white and I need a camera that I can easily learn to use. Thanks for your help. Natalie

  3. From David (Wed Nov 15 07:43:43 2000 ):
I have a well used and much loved FE which has started to lock up, needing to be set to a mech speed to release the mirror again. I think the problem is a dirty film speed resitor as by rolling up and down the ASA setttings a few times the problem will disapear for a few months. Short of having the camera stripped and repaired professionally are there any quick fixes for this? I have removed the re-wind collar and tried blasting a can of compressed air around to blow the dirt out but it doesn't seem to make much difference. (I bought an FM of similar vintage as a back up and have been enjoying using it, but would like to get my FE on its feet again)

  4. From Geleko (Mon Nov 13 22:44:36 2000 ):
    * Timbo * Correct camera case for Databack MF-12 for Nikon FM, FM2, FE and FE2 is CF-15D; for MF-16 when used with all those bodies mentioned earlier - use CF-27D instead (Nikon FA/MF-16 combination uses CF-30D). ALWAYS Remember: it is the BASE portion of the case that matters !

  5. From Timbo (Sat Nov 11 02:09:36 2000 ):
What is the best camera case to fit my Nikon FE with a MF-12 databack attached? While I'm asking, what is the best camera case to fit a Nikon FG with a MF-15 databack?

  6. From ManuelK.S. (Thu Nov 9 17:13:55 2000 ):
To Fiori: From the perspective of the seller, one would like to lead others to think a Nikon FE is highly collectible items and ask for a good premium, naturally a buyer would think otherwise until he/she owns one himself /herself. But as a general rule, I would always protect interest of the buyer because there is no point 'protecting' a seller since he is no longer interested in keeping or using the particular camera model anymore (He could well be using your money to subsidize buying a Canon, Minolta or Olympus etc..) - as a rough buyer's guide, I would think USD150-180 is a fair price, again depends on condition of the unit and see if there is any other packaged accessories that may comes with it. Don't get upset if you have already coughed out more for one .. from the cliff-hanging sunshine state of conspiracy filled election 2000. Viva Bush Jr. -M.K.S- FL.

  7. From Toby Whitley (Fri Dec 8 00:25:25 2000 ):
What an excellent site, I have just started taking photography seriously and after some advice bought a 2nd hand FE2, then more recently an MD12 and SB-16B. This site has been invaluble.

  8. From Jeff (Tue Dec 5 09:41:01 2000 ):
can anyone tell me where I can get a rewind knob for an FE (black case)

  9. From S h u (Tue Dec 5 09:11:09 2000 ):
FE-10 seems like a camera that can do just about everything as long as your willing to compromise(you have to be a DIY, do it yourself kinda person). And hey folks, anyone thinking of buying FE-2 should think twice, I've hear that they are "delicate" and can break down easly if you're a hard user, eventhough their collector value did go up quite a bit. I really wanted to get the FE-2 myself, but I wish they made it as sturdy as the F-3s.

  10. From JWoods (Fri Dec 1 22:11:52 2000 ):
**Raoul O. Queri**: It is perfectly alright not knowing what is that "A" all about. Probably that could have help you understand photography and has a better basic in operating a camera if that friend of yours informed you a year or so later what is that "A" can do for you. Basically, Nikon FE2 will operate exactly like a mechanical camera such as FM or FM2n WHEN you press the center of the shutter speed ring while turning away from that "A" setting (It stands for "AUTO"). You will have to adjust aperture (Lens section) and Shutter Speed (Camera section) while using the metering LEDs inside the finder as an exposure guide, we called that "manual" control". Well, once you turn and slid the shutter speed setting to AUTO ("A"), the camera will be converted into an Aperture Priority AE (auto exposure) camera. In this way, all you need to do is to select any aperture on your lens, the camera will, select an appropriate shutter speed to "match" your lens aperture setting. I had a FE-2 many years ago; it is a very well made camera and the aperture priority AE provides making it extremely simple to use. It remains as a Nikon's favorite IF you are wondering HOW aperture would affect your photography, see: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/fototech/apershutter/index.htm

  11. From Raoul O. Queri (Fri Dec 1 11:13:39 2000 ):
Hi everyone, though i own an FE2 nikon camera, i have never use the "A" automatic mode in taking picture; but after reading the basic operation and gen info on this subject, i'm excited to try it ASAP, however if you can further inform me on the use of this camera ( i bought it second hand)i will very much appreciate it...( this is not to say that the posted article is not helpful)...it is ok to assume that i don't have a copy, this way i will get a lot of copies....just email me roqueri@pldt.com.ph..thanks a lot

  12. From Ruddy (Thu Nov 30 02:16:03 2000 ):
I have a Nikon FE model.

  13. From Cheánov (Tue Nov 28 12:34:57 2000 ):
To Aynur ATICI: Between a Nikon FE/FA and a Mechanical Nikon FM2n, I would suggest you to get the latter. DON'T buy new, if you have the time, patiently look for used units instead. Save the money for a wideangle + a telephoto lenses and may be add a good used flash like SB-15. The USD400 MAY well fit into the budget. Frankly, it is a pity that we have to cough out a HUGE sum of USD400-00 just to begin with photography, huh ? So, the suggestion is also meant to preserve your investment and good for your startup course as you will be "Force" to learn from bare basic. Just in case you have never exposed to any of the mechanical Nikon FMs, see this site: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/index.htm By the way, to the webmaster - you have a MARVELOUS Nikon website !

  14. From Aynur ATICI (Tue Nov 28 00:32:36 2000 ):
Hi! I have just started a photograph course for 2 weeks. But I have not got any SLR 35 mm camera yet. I try to buy one. But I don't know what I sould buy for beginners. My budget is limited . I can't pay more than 400$. So I need your help, what is your suggestion for me ? thanks in advance..

  15. From Charles (Thu Nov 23 12:23:11 2000 ):
Happy holidays to all! This afternoon I received an FE2(ex), 50,1.8(ex), and a Tokina zoom lens 28-70,3.5-4.5(ex). It is more than I expected. I have been shooting AF (the other brand) and have enjoyed the camera and the results but something was missing. I, a "baby boomer", wanted something that felt and looked like a camera from my generation. The FE2 is light, easy to manipulate and less obtrusive (candids and street photography). The instructions from this site are thorough and succinct. Unlike many forums the FE site here is responsive and tolerant of others. It was intstrumental in my choosing the FE2 instead of the FM2n, FA, FG, Minolta, and Canon. An excellent site. You will hear from me again. Thanks to all of you.

I have an fe and want to add a flash. what flashes work best?

  18. From Jason (Wed Dec 20 11:33:01 2000 ):
Michael: Your URL posted in your earlier message reads "...ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved.." are you misssing out some detail in that address ? I love to hear your opinion between the FE10 adn FE2. I am using a FE currently, and has been undecided whether to get a manual FM2n or the FE2 (Well, I have heard too much about the FE10/FM10 and thought I should omit that option from my list).

  19. From Jason (Wed Dec 20 09:17:02 2000 ):
To "Toto": I don't think there is a PDF file for the instruction manual in this malaysian site, instead, the instruction manual is only available in a standard HTML format. It starts from here: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe2/basic1.htm IF you have tme, also read these sections on technical notes: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe2/fe2a.htm These are excellent resources where I don't think you can get anything closer than these on the Net else where, I would suggest you print them via a printer or saved each pages on your hardisk. By the way, GREAT SITE, webmaster !

  20. From toto (Wed Dec 20 03:51:54 2000 ):
I'm looking for a manual for my "new" FE in french version. It's a second-hand camera I bought "as is", without any lens, bag... Can someone help me? I'd be glad to be able at least to download a manual, in PDF format for example. Thanks!

  21. From michael (Tue Dec 19 09:19:24 2000 ):
the fe2 is a perfectly sturdy user body. i have beaten my and it is still working perfectly. i have taken it on a trans european jaunt, sans camera bag or protection. all is well. i have taken it into the cold, no worries. it is a fine camera and far more worthwhile than the fe10. in my humble opinion. -michael http://www.stern.nytu.edu/~mnm207

  22. From Dan Nicholson (Tue Dec 19 04:44:25 2000 ):
Can anyone present a comparison of Tamron, Sigma and Tokina lenses for Nikons?

  23. From George Jew (Mon Dec 18 13:53:18 2000 ):
I would like some feedback to a problem with my FE. The meter seems to be dead. Already replace battery. The shutter seem to work at the M90 setting. I can fire a flash at this speed. Any other speed I cannot seen the gap between the openning and closing curtain nor can I trigger a flash. Major problem?

  24. From Clark (Sat Dec 16 05:09:48 2000 ):
"Help" Please look at these sample pictures at www.geocities.com/cozmostar These are from a Fe2 the haze happens about 5 or 6 prints per roll.It only happens outside.Indoors with flash it hasent happened yet.I have replaced the foam in the camera to see if it was light leaks.Nope still happens help!!!!

  25. From Felix (Tue Dec 12 23:35:18 2000 ):
Great site! Apart from... where's the FE instruction manual for downloading? Help!

  26. From Prem (Fri Dec 8 15:24:32 2000 ):
Greetings from Qatar. Hats off to the people involved in hosting such an informative site. I purchased a FE10 last week. I am quite happy with the purchase (US$300) but my enthusiasm faded when I realized the shortcomings of FE10 after reading the posted info.

  27. From Roger Mast (Fri Jan 12 06:13:42 2001 ):
I have recently acquired an FE and am in the process of discovering what a great camera this is. Is there any type of spot metering device incorporated into this camera?

  28. From marshall (Fri Jan 5 14:13:48 2001 ):
I have the same problem as Bill Parolin with my FE. The batteries are good but the shutter will not reset no matter where I turn the shutter dial. Any suggestions other that haven't been covered?

  29. From David (Fri Jan 5 04:28:18 2001 ):
Hi Bill I hope the remedy to the problem is a simple re-set. If the camera has been stored for a while the shutter speed and film speed resistors may be a bit dirty, work the dials and the apperture ring back and forward a few times to clean them off. Set the camera to one of the manual speeds, either M90 or Bulb, and the mirror and shutter should re-set as you do this. If the batteries are OK then all should be well. If the batteries are flat then the camera can be used on M90 until you can replace them. Have fun with the FE

  30. From Bill Parolin (Fri Jan 5 02:30:16 2001 ):
What a great site! I may find the answer to my question here somewhere, but in case I don't, could someone please advise me on how to resolve this problem: I got my old FE out of the closet recently after a couple of years (or more) of being on the shelf. I attempted to test the shutter mechanism by cocking and snapping the shutter. The shutter then locked in the closed position. I knew the batteries were dead, so I then installed a new one, but still can't get the shutter to open up. I'm sure there's a way to fix this, short of brute force, but nothing I've tried seems to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I love this camera and plan to put it back into service.

  31. From Heather (Thu Jan 4 08:01:35 2001 ):
Great site! I have had an FE since the late 80's and have had it locked away for the last 10 years or so. I decided to take it out, dust it off and get back into photography again. Hope it still works! Got a wonderfull refresher course from your site! Wish me luck! :)

  32. From LKLEE (Tue Jan 2 17:36:15 2001 ):
Can some one advice me on Nikon FE2 shutter jam problem ,as i am having this problem and the film advance cannot clock film , shutter push button no responce, set to M250 no help.

  33. From Larry Blumenthal (Tue Jan 2 09:51:08 2001 ):
Last night, after shooting a roll of film on my Nikon FE, I could not unload the film - the back of the camera will NOT open. I noticed, the last few times I had unloaded film, a little trouble getting the back to open, but I ignored it. Last night, I went to open it (after rewinding the film), and the Safety Lock went back much further than it normally does. I pulled up on the Rewind Knob and it got stuck in an "up" position, but the back didn't open. I tried several times and now the Safety Lock is pushed way back and the Rewind Knob is still stuck and the camera won't open. The Instruction Manual says "Note, too, that the camera back can be removed from the body by depressing the locking catch on the hinge" but I cannot find the LOCKING CATCH ON THE HINGE. Can someone please tell me where, EXACTLY, is this Locking Catch, what it looks like, and what I should use to depress it? I would appreciate it. Thanks - Larr

  34. From Nick Tountas (Tue Jan 2 07:51:41 2001 ):
I own a Nikon FE that I have had since 1978. My dad and I love this camera, which has been through hell and back. Recently the self timer has become somewhat, shall we say, sluggish. last night, while taking a delayed exposure of my baby, my wife and I, the timer ran out of steam in mid stream, and the mirror became locked. Interestingly enough, the shutter curtain was closed. I was able to rectify the problem by removing the batteries, setting the shutter to M90 and cajoling the timer, gradually, to its start position. Rather than get this fixed, I have decided simply to avoid using the timer. In my very humble opinion, there is not a camera being made today that compares with my old FE, FM and f2a. God bless to all. Nick Tountas, Palmer Lake, CO

  35. From David (Sun Dec 24 20:27:00 2000 ):
Hi Doug I don't know what you want to use the flash for but if you don't need a huge amount of power and are happy to use the gun on the camera then I would suggest you look for an old SB10 - this will match the FE in that it will set flash sync. speed when it is charged (if the camera is set to auto) light the viewfinder ready light and will flash the ready light if the shutter speed is set manually above sync. Light quality from the gun is good - definitely on a par with my old vivitar guns and it cycles fairly rapidly although not quickly enough to keep up with the md12. The only real down side is that it doesn't have an external flash lead connector - if you want to use it off camera you'll need to find a remote "hot-shoe" If you can find one in reasonable condition (check the battery compartment for signs of old battery leakage) then it should prove a good, reliable buy. David

  36. From liisa (Sun Dec 24 08:02:04 2000 ):
This was an incredibly informative site, as I was given an FE model Nikon with accessories and am a brand new wanna be photographer. Many thanks !!! Can anyone help me in greece (athens ) at the moment or Toronto in the new year clear up a problem with the screen, cannot see through eye piece I think due to humidity, dirt etc.. on the screen. I just purchased a brand new Minolta SXsi I think? and love the feel of this old Nikon already. I have two lenses the MICRO NIKKOR 55 mm 1:28, and the KIRON 80-200mm, that I believe is compatible, also an auto 2X teleconverter an an IMAGE C-80 bounce computer flash........does all of this go together, pls advice on this and the screen/maintenance problem, where shall I go for repair and cleaning????
  37. From David (Sun Jan 28 22:06:33 2001 ):
Hi Barry I've been using the 35-70 for a couple of years and getting v good results with it provided I am carefull to keep the light source well out of field of view - it seems to be very prone to flare, even when the sun is well out of shot, with everything from an overall lowering of contrast to blood red shadows appearing under boulders on a hillside - very spooky! - I hope it was flare!!! As for a fixed w/a - a 28 mm is probably too close to the low end of the 35 - 70 to be very useful so I would suggest a 24mm - the f2.8 Nikkor is an excelent lens which you should be able to pick up s/h without too much financial outlay. I've more or less settled on this and a 55mm micro for most of my hill walking shots, leaving the 35-70 for when I can have more control over the angle I'm shooting from.

  38. From Barry (Sun Jan 28 15:45:03 2001 ):
Hi, Was clearing out my father's house and found a mint condition (he probably used it once)N2000 which I have been playing around with. I like it but I have been seduced by the FE2 and am awaiting arrival of the newly purchased camera. I currently have a Nikkor 35-70 3.3-4.5 and a Nikkor 80-200 f4.5. Also a vivitar 2x extender/macro(this actually works pretty well with the 80-200 but you lose 2 stops). What would be a nice quality wider angle fixed lens that doesn't cost a thousand USDs to purchase?. Also, any comments on the lenses I have appreciated. The 35-70 came with the N2000 and I went out and got the 80-200. By the way, This is a fantastic sight and really informative. Thanx to the webmaster :)

  39. From Jack (Sun Jan 28 05:12:16 2001 ):
Hello! I just purchased an old Nikon FE and I love it! I want to get a flash for it and I want to know which would be best for the FE...a SB-10 unit or the newer SB-15? Thanks for the advice! Love this sight! Jack

  40. From David (Mon Jan 22 08:24:30 2001 ):
Further to the post about spot metering. The Nikon FE does not offer spot metering. It uses centre weighted metering (60 / 40 split) which is not the same as true spot metering (I think some of the old Minolta SLR's offered a true 2 degree spot metering mode) If you want to meter zones simply close in and fill the finder with the tone which you want to meter then apply any corrections necessary to get the exposure which you want on film. Hope this clears up any confusion. David

  41. From David (Mon Jan 22 08:17:09 2001 ):
Hi Ray A couple of questions - You say that your flash photo's are not "timing" correctly - do you mean that they are under / over exposed or is there an unexposed border on the print / slide caused by the shutter speed being set too high? If it's an exposure problem - Can you borrow another flash gun and try it? My own 283's have both stopped metering correctly and give much too much exposure - neg too dense. (an older 273 is still ok) If it's a shutter speed problem - with no film in the camera and the lens removed - open the back with the flash fitted and point the camera towards a blank wall - look through the back of the camera and fire the shutter - you should see the complete frame exposed - if not set a shutter speed manually - try from 1/30 and try again - set progressively faster speeds until you can see the shutter cutting off the top of the frame (should be 1/500 with an FE2 - 1/250 should be ok) The FE doesn't give any form of TTL flash metering - all light measurement is made by the gun's own sensor - check that this is clean and isn't obstructed. If the exposure is consistently over or under you may be able to work around it by setting a different aperture on the camera - shoot some test shots and see. Hope some of this helps David

  42. From Ray Callan (Sat Jan 20 10:12:12 2001 ):
I am not sure if the electonics in my FE2 or flash (Vivitar auto thyristor 5600) is acting up? Daylight photos are ok but flash photos are not timing properly. Other than the speedlight 16b or sb-15, are there any suggestions? Is there any place to send the nikon for a test of the electronics. Such as the nikon site that was at rockefeller center in nyc. I also have a Nikon F that needs to have the material replaced, that dampens the shutter when it closes. Thanks in advance.

  43. From Jean Chew (Mon Jan 15 16:15:00 2001 ):
Need advice? Just got a FE10. Which flash goes best with this model? What's the difference bet SB27, SB26 and SB16B? Thanks!

  46. From A.Stanford (Fri Jan 12 20:38:25 2001 ):
In reply to Roger Mast's posting: "...Is there any type of spot metering device incorporated into Nikon FE camera ?.." Yes. Virtually ALL modern days cameras (SLRs, rangefinder or P&S cameras) have incorporated with a metering circuit inside the camera for assistance or providing an exposure guide. In relation to your Nikon FE's metering and exposure capability, there is a section featured on this excellent malaysian website: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe/tech1.htm Regards. - AS, CA -

Anyone know where I can get a corrective eyepiece for an FE2 in the UK?

  48. From Hermann Graf (Tue Feb 13 00:11:05 2001 ):
To Lars, as of Feb 7, 2001: I was able to have a look on Nikon's information handout on the FM3A here in Germany (the retailer had only one exemplar), and I must say, you are right. Not many new features as compared with the FE2 are added to the FM3A except the TTL flash exposure reduction button, the mechanical backup of all exposure times in manual mode, and a - probably - brighter focusing screen (K3/E3 vs. K2/E2). A new camera case is also offered, although the camera's dimensions are pretty similar to those of the FM2. Needle meter (illuminable?) seems to be the same as in the FE2, and is perhaps as shock-sensitive as the FE2's.

I have an FE2 that I loaned to a friend for a couple of years and am now retrieving for a project. She tells me that the shutter is sticking and hasn't been using it - I live in Tokyo, any one know a repair place that will work on the FE2 in Tokyo?
