  1. From Olaf Matthes (Thu Apr 6 03:04:28 2000 ):
I just bought a FE and (seem) to have problems with the shutter-speeds. Everytime I get different shutter speeds. Sometimes using 1/125s sounds quite well, sometimes it sounds like 1/15 or even longer! I haven`t tried test exposures yet, probably is a fault of the camera? Have used brand newe batteries. Can anybody help me?

  2. From Jim (Mon Apr 3 10:11:22 2000 ):
When my FE2 is in automatic or manual mode the shutter speed indicator does not move. The camera selects the proper shutter speed but the black needle does not indicate this in the view finder...Does anyone know what's wrong?????PLEASE E-MAIL

  3. From David Hinds (Tue Mar 28 09:22:55 2000 ):
Does anyone have the product designation for the 3v lithium battery for an FE?

  4. From Robert (Tue Mar 28 02:07:18 2000 ):
I recently purchased a FE and noticed that after firing the mirror flips back with quite some noise. At the back of the mirror a piece of velvet is missing right where it hits the lever on which the mirror rests (on the left side of the mirror). I can't make out whether this piece of the mirror is supposed to be free of velvet or that it has worn out. I'm afraid that the impact of the mirror bouncing back is harmful.

  5. From Neal Londos (Mon Mar 27 04:07:58 2000 ):
Would anyone know where I can purchase a Nikon FE2.

  6. From sue (Sat Mar 25 05:02:02 2000 ):

I just got my brothers FE after setting in a box for 15 yrs. The leather case is all cracked and needs to be replaced. Can someone help me with a good mail order house that would carry good body covers ? Thanks Don / Michigan

  8. From Sharry (Wed May 3 05:43:56 2000 ):
My father-in-law loaned me his Nikon FE which I took on vacation. Guess who's bag got lost! What would I pay to replace the FE? Does anyone out there know, or can recommend an auction/sale site? Thanks. sf

  9. From Salim (Sat Apr 29 01:09:16 2000 ):
My FE2 is excellent. Does not give any problem at all. I love it. My friend says it is equivalent to Nikon F3 - is that so?

  10. From MC Lau (Thu Apr 27 23:47:48 2000 ):
**** To Crawford **** The MD12 motor drive is still in current production.

  11. From Dick Olson (Tue Apr 25 06:09:16 2000 ):
My Nikon FE needs a light meter circuit repair. It was sent to the factory but they have no parts available. Can anyone make a recommendation on a repair shop that might have the parts to fix the metering circuit. Thanks!!

  12. From Seth (Sat Apr 22 12:47:35 2000 ):
I know that this question has been asked several times before, but I am curious as to when my FE was made. I have a fairly high serial number compared to others I have seen: 4295059 which I guess means it was made in maybe 1980? If anybody knows of a site where I can find this information, please post it here (and email to me if possible! :) By the way: I really love this Website! All the information I ever wanted to know about the classic Nikons! The information here is what I used to make my purchasing decision, and I am very happy so far! Thanks very much for all the hard work - and no advertisements, too! Seth in Oregon, USA

  13. From Amanda Leung (Sat Apr 22 05:28:59 2000 ):
Hi Olaf! My FE2 gave me random shutter speeds all of a sudden last year after having worked fine for the 6 months since I was given it. I took it to be serviced and was told part of the release mechanism had become jammed by sand (from taking photographs in sand dunes) and corroded as a result of the camera being stored for a number of years in humid conditions (in SE Asia). Replacing the corroded piece was easy and inexpensive (a few pounds on top of the regular service fee). Amanda

  14. From Crawford (Fri Apr 21 01:54:28 2000 ):
Flash and Motor-drive Questions: What type of new and/or used flash and motordrive should I buy for the FE? Thanks

  15. From Nick Smith (Sun Apr 16 20:41:03 2000 ):
Hi there, another serial No. question I'm afraid! My FE2 (Black) has a serial No. of 2543857 - anyone know when it was made? Also, just on the off-chance MD 12 drive is 1705286... Any help appreciated, thanks Nick Smith

  16. From PJennings (Sat Apr 15 11:42:04 2000 ):
#YukiFujita#: SB-23 is a good AF flash, compact and highly portable. It provides Matrix Fill Flash with F4 series and vitually all the N-series bodies that provides TTL flash exposure control. FE-2 and FA (FG too) provide the most raw form of TTL flash (Via TTL contacts on the flash mounting foot and on top of the accessory shoe on the camera section) and it should work equally fine with your FE-2 camera. Enjoy.

  17. From Alan (Sat Apr 15 04:10:01 2000 ):
I am considering buying a Sunpak 433D (Nikon ded.) flash for use with an FE and FE2. Does anyone have any experience with these combinations? Will automatic (non-TTL) flash exposure work on the FE? Will the TTL flash exposure work on the FE2? Will both of these work off-camera? Will the camera viewfinder ready/warning light work?

  18. From Jim Lynch (Mon Jun 5 04:57:20 2000 ):
the only mention of a shutter jam the information on this site is to say that the M90 setting will still be useful. HOW DOES ONE UNJAM THE SHUTTER?

  19. From michael (Fri May 26 03:52:03 2000 ):
look at a vivtar 283, or 285; also look at sunpack 383. great, smallish, powerful (relative to cost and size), and versatile flashes. personally i use a 285 as a back up to my nikon sb16. it is a great all manual flash-- it would serve you well, assuming you're willing to learn flash technique and basic concepts about light.

  20. From oTTO (Fri May 26 00:38:52 2000 ):
I´m just starting in photography and have decided getting an FE. I would be very thankful knowing anything i should attempt to pick out a body in good conditions. Please relate me a site if you know one or just email me. Obrigado!

What is the value of an FE Nikon?

  22. From maideen (Tue May 23 23:09:09 2000 ):
I bought a second hand FE2 in Johor, it work for 4 month. during the 4 month period it got intermittent problem. like shutter jam. can't cock. I have to give the camera a knock to "wake it up". finally, the exposure meter give problem.it can't read below ISO 3200. I brought to Nikon S'pore it cost S$150 (RM300) to repair it. I was told if the shutter break down, there is no more spare part for it.

  23. From Krishna (Sat May 20 12:06:11 2000 ):
Hi, I just purchased a new Nikon FE10, can somebody suggest me for a economically cheap flash & also let me know if there is any site available for accessories like carry bag/stap etc.

I just changed pulled out a roll in my FE and when I put in a new roll the shutter doesnít work. The mirror stays locked up but the shutter doesnít open. Batteries are fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  25. From Rob (Thu May 18 05:17:01 2000 ):
Help! I just got a used FE. I've had an old F for years. I can't even figure out how to get the shutter-cock/winder to work. It pulls out so it's in "on" position but nothing else. There is a black button on the front of where the winder handle mounts but doesn't seem to do anything. I haven't put film in yet-- does that matter? Also, there's a little black teardrop-shaped switch of some sort on the back, below the rewinder. Any clues what it does? Also, the rewinder handle is missing-- any ideas on where I can get a replacement? I'm not seeing anything thru the viewfinder although the lens is mounted properly and works fine. Thanks for any help!

  28. From jusko (Mon Jun 19 21:18:02 2000 ):
Can the data back MF-16 used on FE or FE2 ? What is the accessory CF-27D used for ?

  29. From Stephen (Sun Jun 18 11:19:44 2000 ):
I have 2 questions for anyone out there who can help: (1) I've just purchased a used FE2 and am excited about it, but am dismayed to be reading comments here about "shutter jamming". You see, I used to have an FE which served me well except for the fact that the shutter would occasionally jam! After 3 expensive repairs, I finally gave up on the FE. However, I so liked the FE's simple layout that I decided to look into its replacement, the FE2. I was delighted to find that the shutter design in the FE2 was radically different than that of the FE. But now I'm reading that the FE2 has the same kind of shutter-jamming problem that I enocuntered with the FE! Tell me it ain't so! Do the FE2's have the same rate of shutter failure as the FE's? Is the fact that the FE2 was introduced with a honeycomb shutter material that was later replaced with a smooth material indicate that there were problems with the honeycomb design? Second issue (2): is there any way I can tell when my FE2 was made? Serial no. 2308792.

  30. From Ron (Sun Jun 18 10:06:10 2000 ):
I'm experiencing some sporadic failure of the light meter on my FE2...love the camera, and have had it since new. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know of a sure fix for this condition? Thank you very much.

  31. From Val (Fri Jun 16 10:50:13 2000 ):
I have a Nikon FE. When I leave a lens on it that is set at one of the higher f numbers and I want to remove the lens or if I shift the aperature ring back and forth sometimes the meter coupling lever and ridge gets stuck for a moment. Did anybody else have this problem and what is the fix. I really like my FE. Thank you, waiting for a reply. Val.

  32. From evan z (Tue Jun 13 00:30:44 2000 ):
We have an old Nikon FE with a MD-12 motor drive sitting around in our lab, and a friend of mine got it back in working condition. He says I should get some lenses for it, but I don't know much about it. Can anyone here tell me where to look for used lenses on the web? Thanks.

  33. From H. Watanabe (Sun Jun 11 00:48:18 2000 ):
I also experienced the notorious "shutter-jam" problem on my FE2. When I had an opportunity to bring it to Nikon's customer service centre in Japan, their answer disappointed me a lot. As most of you were told, it was a typical shutter-unit problem and hopeless to solve because of no more stock part found anywhere. However, when I came back to Singapore and brought it to a repair shop, surprisingly, he accepted to do the job. When I asked him "How will you repair without parts?", he said, "What I can do is to open the cover and adjust the shutter-unit only." A week later, I could get back my "completely fixed" FE2. It costed at approx S$180 with 3 month warranty given. It was about 6 months ago and the warranty period being expired, but my FE2 doesn't need any more services for the time being. The shop is on the 2nd floor of The Adelphi(near Peninsula Plaza) building. It is not officially authorized by Nikon, but I'm really satisfied with his job and love his attitude trying his best.

  34. From Jusko (Fri Jun 9 18:56:47 2000 ):
Anyone has the experience of replacing himself the foam strip for reducing the vibration of mirror flip up ? Or any other substitute can do beside the foam ?

  35. From Jusko (Fri Jun 9 18:30:56 2000 ):
I have both the Nikon FE2 and FM2. But I found the light meter for FE2 is a stop brighter than the FM2, e.g. same speed, 5.6 for FM2 but 4 for FE2. I am sure the reading for FM2 is correct, but when I took the FE2 to the Nikon authorized repair shop, the technician said the light meter for FE2 is good and correct after equipment testing. Any comment please Jusko

  36. From jade (Fri Jun 9 02:56:22 2000 ):
hi cam the fe be used with the f's lenses

  37. From Tom Wolfe (Thu Jun 8 04:15:46 2000 ):
I own an FE2 I purchased new in the 1980s. It has worked dependably until last winter, when the shutter kept sticking. I thought the cold weather had something to do with it, but that wasn't it. I thought there was something wrong with the autowind. But even after taking it off, the shutter still sticks. I've changed batteries numerous times. I'm a writer, but I depend on my camera to illustrate stories. In looking at this bulletin board, I see a lot of reference to sticking shutters. Is this something that just happens to FE2s as they age. Is it worth my time to have a repairman check it out. Thanks for your help.

Can any one tell me where I can get a Nikon FE10 in India. I live in Chennai. A dealer told me that the camera is no longer available.

  40. From Ron Bianchi (Fri Jun 30 02:42:56 2000 ):
Help! I have an FE which according to the Authorized Nikon Repair Service Rep. cannot be repaired given that Nikon no longer makes the part. It needs a Flex Power Assy. Some sort of a circuit that controls the Power Supply? I took 4 rolls of film without realizing the batteries were dead. (No I did not check the meter, my fault) However, the mirror is supposed to lock when batteries are gone, according to Nikon this is the same for all Nikons FE,FG etc. (I also have an FG and it does lock.) However, during a two day period when I shot the 4 rolls the mirror kept openning/closing, film trasport worked fine, but of course there was no exposure. Anyway, anyone out there knows where I can find this part? I would live to get my FE back. Thanks

  41. From Jwoods (Tue Jun 27 20:42:59 2000 ):
##RaySwem & Ronnie L Morgan##: If you have not used a Nikon FE camera before, content in this site should able to help you fine and understand this camera better (Perhaps may be even better than an original camera manual), you should try to start from this page as opposed to the link presented in the main index page, if you find it too troublesome, print them out in hard copies (Because these contents are free !): http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe/body.htm If you want an original manual, try asking http://www.nikonusa.com and see if they still sell instruction manual or buy a used copy from a commerical outlet such as http://www.craigcamera.com/ it should be around US15-20 per book, depends on condition.

  42. From Haga (Sat Jun 24 04:17:52 2000 ):
Hello I started to use my old FE2 again and the SB16 flash. Question: When I have the camera on auto on use the SB 16 in TTL mode as a fill in flash during day light, does the flash influence on the exposure time the camera use or is it the ambient light that on determines that? I took a series of close up pictures with camera on auto and with different appertures, some pictures where ok but others very under or over exsposed, what happen here. Arnt the flash suppose to give the correct amount of flash light in accordance with camera setting in TTL mode?

I have a older nikon fe #3280129 and some how have miss laid the instruction book that came wit the camera when I purchased it new.Does anyone know where I can get one or purchase one? Thankyou

  45. From Jwoods (Wed Jun 21 11:06:45 2000 ):
##Jusko##: Among ALL Nikon bodies, Nikkormat (Nikomat) models are the ONLY Nikon models that do not provide a removable film back. Naturally, the Nikon FE, a model introduced AFTER the Nikon FM can also be removed and make use of the MF-12 (NOT MF-16). To remove a film back, push down the hinge pin at the side of the camera and you can change the film back. Try it yourself, it is easy and it won't hurt - EXCEPT don't do it when you have films inside, hehe...

  46. From jusko (Tue Jun 20 21:22:19 2000 ):
But I wonder whether the back cover of FE can be removed !!

  47. From PJennings (Tue Jun 20 11:44:13 2000 ):
**Jusko**: MF-12 is the right Databack for Nikon FE (And FM). The current MF-16 is NOT usable with the FE. But the MF-12 is usable on all the Nikon FM, FE series and the Nikon FA. Thus, I agreed, a used MF-12 (It has a cable that wired to the front Sync socket) looks a better buy.

  48. From Greg (Sun Aug 6 11:01:52 2000 ):
I have a Nikon FE that has the film advance lever stuck on it. The shutter release will not work. I have taken it to a local shop and the batteries were replaced but to no avail. They do not repair cameras at this shop but send them off. What are my chances of having this camera repaired? It is Nikon FE4425918.Thanks for any information or advice you can give.

  49. From Victor Baca (Sun Aug 6 07:27:59 2000 ):
Hi, I just found this board and it's great! My black body FE2 has been in continuous use since I purchased it new in the 1980s. Previous to that I used a Nikkormat FT2 (meter "twitch" caused me to sell it) and had a Nikon-F prior to that in the early 70s. By far, I like the FE2 best. It's well laid out and has never given me a problem. We are ship photographers, so the camera sees heavy use aboard commercial and military ships as well as mucking around in drydocks etc, where opportunities abound for smacking the camera. My FE2 has, on rare occasion, jammed its shutter, but I "fixed" by going to M250 or fiddling with the shutter speed dial, clicking the release etc., until it snapped back to life. That problem hasn't occured in the past 12 years, though. All in all, the FE2 is an excellent camera which I have grown very fond of. I just purchased a used MD-12 motor drive for the FE2 and wonder why it took me so long to get one! Best Regards, Victor Baca Photomarine Archives

My film advance lever is stuck and will not advance my film thus locking my mirror in the up position. I have tried everything I know to try to get this to work to no avail. Has anyone else had this happen or how I can get this fixed without expensive repairs. I miss this camera desperately. Thanks
