  2. From Geoff Brown (Sun Feb 11 02:56:01 2001 ):
To Keith, Seems your E mail address has been written down wrong, as i tried to send you a letter privately, anyway, if you want a list of secondhand dealers in the U.K that i have used, and trust, E mail me, i know of a few mint condition FE2's going.

  3. From Keith England (Sat Feb 10 17:29:00 2001 ):
My 1982 FE is beginning to die - the seals around the back are melting and going like wet tar, I got it on a film leader before I noticed it and the leader then touched the shutter blinds eek! I will probably try and get it serviced (Grays of Westminster seems a good bet) but does anyone know a good place in UK that I can pick up a second hand FE2 to replace it - the new FM3 is W-a-y out of my leaque these days!

  4. From David (Fri Feb 9 08:26:33 2001 ):
Best of both worlds? I've just had a look at the specs for the forthcoming FM3 Alloy body, Auto exposure from 8s to 1/4000, MANUAL (no battery needed) speeds from 1s to 1/4000 TTL flash, MD12 compatable. Time to do some overtime (£600 worth!) I think. :)

  5. From Lars (Wed Feb 7 22:55:35 2001 ):
Maxwell does not seem to the page up anymore! Well the FM3A was ofiicially announced on 5 Feb. 2001 (see http://www.nikon-image.com/eng/). A view of the top and finder view is to be found @ http://www.nikon.cz/fm3a.htm This camera seems to be a true blend of the FM2 and FE2 with not much added. For the FE2 user there won't be much gained except the ability to buy it new and go without batteries. Apart from this there seems to be only one minor additional feature; a fill flash compensation button. I have not been able to find more info on this and I can't see it on any of the images.

  6. From Lars (Thu Feb 1 16:22:06 2001 ):
Good news for FE-series users! Nikon seems to be releasing an FM/FE-hybrid; the FM3A! No news on the meter readout layout! Read more @ http://www.maxwell.com.au/photo/cameras/slr/FM3A.html

  7. From Robert (Tue Jan 30 10:00:30 2001 ):
Hi, great site. I got my FE for over 20 years and still using it. My meter suddenly not work. Does any one know where to get it fix? or does it worth to fix it, I can still use it in manual setting. The local camera shop charge a bundle. Thanks.

  8. From Charles Chen (Fri Feb 23 13:25:52 2001 ):
I want to by a Nikon FE-2 body and lens. Is there any camera for sale? Feel free to contact with me.

  9. From Tim Fenton (Fri Feb 23 04:39:38 2001 ):
I recently lost to burglars my Nikon FE body and two Nikor lenses, a 28mm and a 50mm, which were purchased new with the camera body. Now I'm negotiating with my insurance company on the value of these items. Does anyone know what the camera body and lenses might have sold for new back in '78 - '80?

  10. From Emma (Fri Feb 23 03:49:23 2001 ):
I have a Nikon FE that the chip inside has gone bad and the electronics will not operate. I understand that Nikon no longer makes replacement parts for this camara. I would like to know what the camera is worth. Thank you.

  11. From James (Thu Feb 22 01:41:20 2001 ):
anyone know where I can download (pdf?) a operation manual for a nikon fe?

  12. From Lars (Mon Feb 19 17:55:27 2001 ):
Herman - I think it is safe to assume that the FM3A meter WILL indeed work in M mode (if batteries are installed) as there would otherwise be absolutely NO need for both an indicator and a needle in the meter read out (just as in Fe and FE2).

  13. From Larry Blumenthal (Sun Feb 18 10:19:50 2001 ):
Looking for a reputable and inexpensive (as much as possible) CAMERA REPAIR shop near Los Angeles, CA - to fix my Nikon FE. Thanks, Larr

  14. From Andy (Sat Feb 17 19:57:14 2001 ):
Just bought an FE2 + Nikkor 35-105/3.5-4.5 after some time away from photography. I have also just started using Ilford Delta 3200 for the first time. Every single photo is underexposed, yet colour prints come out ok. Can anyone suggest what's going wrong? I tend to leave a red filter on all the time to increase contrast but surely TTL metering would take account of that wouldn't it? Many thanks for any suggestions.

  15. From Hermann Graf (Fri Feb 16 17:36:26 2001 ):
Again to Lars: Another feature in the new FM3A which I am not so fond of is - according to Nikon's website - that the light meter is disabled when switching the shutter to manual operation.

  16. From Jim Hobbs (Wed Feb 14 08:22:37 2001 ):
Does any one know where I can download a repair manual for a Nikon FE? Thanks JH

  18. From Shawn Varner (Tue Mar 13 10:37:34 2001 ):
I have an older Nikon FE that is in need of some serious repair. Like it has been dropped or smashed in a move. The camera was given to me. Is it worth fixing and where can I send it. I live in the panhandle of Nebraska. Thanks for any information that you can give. Shawn

I am selling my Nikon FA and FE2 bodies and several lenses, many extras, MD12 motordrives, Metz flash gun, photographic case etc. Email me if you need more info. and make an offer!

  20. From Steve (Mon Mar 5 13:32:22 2001 ):
What is the weight of the FE10? Does it have match needle metering? Feel free to email me. Thanks.

  21. From okan Tezcanl1 (Mon Mar 5 00:53:36 2001 ):
Dear NIKON I have 2 camera F401 and FE ( 70 210 zoom, 50 100 m. lens.) I am very satisfied with both of my cameras. I have been using Nikon FE for 20 years. It works as good as the day I bough it. Yet, its original leather case is damaged by itself. As I can not undersatnd how can it be so harmed while my camera stayed as new as the day I had bought I kindly ask you to give me some information about this event.

  22. From Geoff Brown (Sun Mar 4 21:10:07 2001 ):
Further to my posting on the new FM3A, i must point out that i had made a Typo' error, which may cause more confusion about this new Nikon, in Manual mode, the camera works just like i had pointed out, but in 'Auto' mode, the two needles do not move together, as i had written, but the one 'Blue' needle stays on the 'A' for Auto, while the second black needle indicates the shutter speed selected by the camera. I hope this hasn't caused too much upset, and i really should put the brain into gear before pressing the keys on the computer, i had only had this new Nikon in my hands an hour before i posted my message, and still wrote it down wrong. Sorry for any confusion. Geoff

  23. From Rick (Sun Mar 4 06:08:47 2001 ):
I have a Nikon FE black body and cannot open the film door. I pull rearwards on the safety lever on the film rewind knob, and upwards, as stated, but it will not budge. Also, the mirror is locked in the up position (no batteries installed) but will not release in B or M90 as stated. Any ideas?

  24. From Manuel Cochofel (Sun Mar 4 02:29:18 2001 ):
I've got a 55mm micro-Nikkor C and a Zoom 80-200 Nikkor P, that fits my Nikkormat FTn body. I'm having some problems with the body, and would like to buy a more recent used one. Wich of the following bodies could I use with the above mentioned lenses:FE, FE-2 or FE-10?

  25. From David (Thu Mar 1 08:46:00 2001 ):
I think the confusion about the FM3a not metering in manual mode stems from teh wording of Nikons press release. They state that the camera "will provide the full range of manual shutter speeds without batteries in the camera, although without any metering...." My FM won't meter without batteries either, but all it's shutter speeds will work. Hope this helps to clear up the confusion. David

  26. From Geoff Brown (Thu Mar 1 02:19:03 2001 ):
There has been many rumours and questions asked, about the new Nikon FM3A, not metering when used in Manual mode, well, i had this very camera in my hands at the Focus on Imaging 2001 show held here in Birmingham England. The FM3A works just like my FE when in auto mode, both needles move together, but when used in manual mode, you use the 'Match Needle' setting, i.e, bring the two needles together to obtain a correct exposure. It is a very well made camera, i was using a black bodied version, which looked and fealt like my FM2n, but the viewfinder looked like my FE. So to everyone who was thinking, or had been told the meter didn't work in manual mode, well, it just isn't true.

  27. From John (Mon Feb 26 19:30:19 2001 ):
My FE2's meter does not work even if I installed a new battery. From my observation the shutter speed is about the same (1/250) regardless of the shutter speed that I have selected, also the A setting does not affect the shutter speed. Is this a common problem with FE2's? How much does it cost to repair on similar problems such as mine?

  28. From randy (Thu Mar 29 05:43:16 2001 ):
I just recently bought a FE for a resonable price but I have no lens. I have been told that the correct (or prefered I should say) lens to get would be the Nikon 50MM f1.4 AI-S. I am not looking to spend a lot of money and the 50MM f1.8 Series E is quite a bit cheaper. Will I really notice that much difference in image quality? Curious in Cali -randy

  29. From Peter S. (Mon Mar 26 05:08:02 2001 ):
Anu, Opening camera back. Although I am not a professional camera repair person, I have done quite a bit of work on Nikkormats. I also own an FE2 and bought a repair manual for it. To get the back open, you will have to peel back some of the leatherette on the camera. This is not as difficult as it sounds. The leatherette is really quite tough and it will not tear. To re-glue it is also very easy. All that is used is contact cement which is commonly sold in hardware stores. You need to peel back about 1 cm of leatherette on the hinge side of camera. (not on the camera back, but on the camera itself) This will expose three (3) small screws. With jewellers screwdrivers, remove the 3 screws and the hinge plate will come off with the camera back. The other side of the camera back has the locking latch. Jiggle the back downwards to get it to disengage from the camera. Hope this helps ... and let us know how you made out. Regards, Peter

  30. From Anu (Sun Mar 25 09:43:14 2001 ):
Does anyone know of any other way of opening the camera back other than the obvious way by lifting the film rewind knob or dismantling the bottom of the body? I was dismantling the film rewind knob on my FE when I unscrewed the knob out. What happened then was the shaft (that screws into this knob) fell inside the camera body. So now I'm left with body with no access to the shaft that releases the door. What this means is that I can't get access inside the camera body. I have tried using a paper clip (in the shape of a hook) through the shaft hole in the hope of hooking onto the "thing" that, when pulled up, will release the door. So far, no luck. I'm not even sure I can hook onto this "thing" in the first place. The other thing that I tried was to pop the back door hinge open (end opposite to the door lock). Usually this would result in the door coming off the hinge, but as the door is locked, it wont budge. I am desperate for any help as I cant shoot anything! Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  31. From Federico Tarallo (Wed Mar 21 06:22:43 2001 ):
I woud like to buy a FE2 CAMERA ir any information please contact me. Thanks

  32. From R. J. (Mon Mar 19 11:08:43 2001 ):
The meter coupling pin on the Nikon lenses will not cause any damage to your FE camera. This pin is used by the F2 series camera for metering. A non-AI lens will not meter properly on the FE as the camera will not know what aperature the lens is set to. The easiest way to tell if the lens is AI is too look at the pin - if the pin is solid then it is a non - AI lens - on any lens that is AI it will have a hole on each side. - Ya just gotta love FE's - I have been using mine every week for about 15 years.

  33. From corey (Mon Mar 19 05:41:43 2001 ):
to clarify my earlier message about the nikon-s auto lens with fe body, i am concerned that because the lens has a pointed matting prong designed for a light-metering pin. will this cause a problem? thanks, again.

  34. From corey (Mon Mar 19 01:45:40 2001 ):
Is a non-ai nikon-s auto lens compatable with the FE body? please feel free to email me.

  35. From Maria (Wed Mar 14 20:42:49 2001 ):
Any well assorted camera dealer should be able to get the eyepieces for you.

  36. From Lars (Wed Mar 14 20:40:15 2001 ):
Shawn - @ www.nikonlinks.com you will find a list of Nikon repair places arround the world. You might be able to buy another FE for the cost of a repair however.

  37. From Maria Cyr (Tue Mar 13 14:45:47 2001 ):
Hi, I have an FE2 and EL both eye pieces (at the base of the viewfinder) are missing... they just screw in. Does anyone know where I can buy these? I've seen larger rubber ones that protect your glasses when looking through the view finder.

  38. From A.Burke (Thu Apr 12 08:51:14 2001 ):
I recently brought an FE10. I`m having a problem with the winding lever. It sometimes stalls on me and will only crank half way (no good) unless I slide the multiple exposure lever. So, this means my film will not wind on am I`m left having to take it out, Ummm. whats going on here? Operator error, but how? thanks for any help.

  39. From sasos (Thu Apr 12 04:08:51 2001 ):
I would like to buy Nikon EM, can you tell me some problems with this body? What am I to check when I will buy it. Thanks

  40. From Chris E. (Thu Apr 12 00:49:57 2001 ):
I have a twenty year old Nikon FE with a variety of Nikon lenses and a Motor Drive. This camera has been great but has seen a few "battles" and is in need of some cleaning and minor cosmetic repair. The motor drive has some quirks and the lenses need a cleaning beyond my ability. My dilema is in turning my "baby" over to someone for the needed work. I'm in Medford, Oregon and looking for advise on finding a reputable shop for repair and cleaning. Advise? Thanks!

  41. From sam (Sat Apr 7 02:07:15 2001 ):
I have a Nikon FE. The problem I am having is when I go to put a lens on the camera, the "ring" that turns with the lens is very stiff. I can get the lens on and it meters well, but getting it on and off is tight because the ring that accepts the lens and turns with it seems to be tight and it doesn't "snap" back as it should. Any ideas on this?

  42. From JWoods (Wed Apr 4 22:23:36 2001 ):
**yona**: Herman may not be wrong. The manual focus 50mm f/1.8 is a very respectable lens in the Nikkor family. Many Japanese still willing to pay premium for it over the f/1.4 (especially the AI version with the hard chrome lens mounting ring). Well, MOST of the 50mm f/1.4 lens on the market still performs miserably at wide open and that is NOT just a specific Nikkor problem. A Leitz 50mm f/1.4 which may cost 3 times of a Nikkor equivalent also exhibits similar "wide aperture softness syndrome". Remember how Popular Photography hammered the USD1000-00 + Leica 50mm f/1.4 M-lens ? It published a lens test which has the famed Leitz optic ranked at par in optical performance with an equivalent of a Yashixxx lens.. So - IF given the choice and budget, Like him - I would take the f/1.8 too. Fact sucks.. at times. Sorry for not using the Lenses Message Board but I do have a Nikon FE which I still used it quite often. Great Nikon Gear and without hassle of carrying of a modern BIG, gigantic AF SLRs. Why couldn't one of those smart fella at Nikon has their 35mm SLRs of the Year 2000 designed more compact in size like the FE rather than being so huge & bulky ?

  43. From Hermann Graf (Wed Apr 4 22:17:49 2001 ):
To Yona: To my knowledge, the Nikon Series E lenses were the low-cost series of Nikon's lenses, but have been abandoned since a couple of years. The normal ones are sold under then brand name Nikkor. It is said that Nikkors, when being identical otherwise, have a better lens coating than Series E models. Moreover, not every Nikkor had its Series E counterpart.

  44. From yona (Wed Apr 4 07:51:35 2001 ):
To: herman hi herman, How good you are in photography, so that you can see the weakness of nikon series E lense, do you know why they used "Nikon series E lense" name rather than Nikkor?

  45. From Adam Carnahan (Wed Apr 4 04:52:47 2001 ):
I don't have a clue about camera's other than I know Nikon is a good name. My grandfather passed away a few months ago, and left behind some old camera's. One says Nikon FE2 and the lens says Nikon zoom-nikkor 43 ~ 86mm | the other is a Nikon 35mm FE. I also have a Nikon speedligh SB-16, but I don't know which one it goes to. If anyone is willing to buy these cameras, please email me. musicman_ace@msn.com

  46. From Joan (Wed Apr 4 04:05:03 2001 ):
I have a Nikon FE Camera. I've been using it since 1980. I take pictures all the time and lately I have had to replace the batteries in the camera every 2 weeks. The camera works fine otherwise and takes great pictures. Someone suggested I might have a short in the camera. Do I send it back to Nikon? local camera store? or does it not pay to fix it? Any suggestions?

  47. From Hermann Graf (Thu Mar 29 18:10:04 2001 ):
To Randy: I would go for a normal Nikkor 50 mm/f1.8 (not a Series E). The f1.8 costs only about one third to one forth of the f1.4, and has only a half fstop less. Moreover, in many tests, the f1.4 turned out to be as sharp as the f1.8 only when stopped down to f2.0, so why going for the f1.4? The price/performance ratio of the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 is so excellent that one does not need to buy a Series E.

  48. From Jensen (Sat Apr 14 12:04:42 2001 ):
Bill, Mr Rosario's link was the Owner's Manual for the FE. But this site also has a Manual Instruction on its own of how to make use of the FE:http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe/basic1.htm As a FE owner, I would rather prefer to use this rather than the factory manual. This is much easier to understand and I think has a great supplements for many other related general knowledge. Well, in most cases, I think you can download and read the scanned copies first and download or print all the pages here at this section and read them offline. IF there are any further matters that need clarifications, come back and make use of this Great Board. We will be here for you.

  49. From Rosario (Fri Apr 13 05:13:34 2001 ):
Message for Bill and his manual for Nikon FE. you can download the entire fotocopied manual (HTML format) at: http://members.fortunecity.com/canoneos/manuals/nikonfe.html Hope this will be useful.

  50. From bill (Fri Apr 13 02:03:19 2001 ):
i need an instruction manual for a nikon fe and an f. help, i'm ignorant in the arizona desert. i am teacher and i am trying to use this information to assist my students. I want to use this camera in classes but CAN NOT because i don't even know how to use it because I don't have the manual! I have looked and looked for the manual all over and even emailed Nikon (they emailed and said the manual is no longer available). Any info will be helpful.

  51. From Gerry (Tue Apr 17 03:55:26 2001 ):
The shutter speed needle on my FE suddenly stopped working. I changed the battery but that did not help. The camera still takes great pictures in "auto" mode but the shutter speed needle does not move. Is this a common problem? Is it fixable?
