The film track casting in the first few hundred of M3 has a different design. Later models has double rails design. This is one of the most common reference point to identification. Serial number inscribed inside the base (requires the base removal of two levels of plates to see this).

Early models has other tiny differences, which includes the shape/design of the eyelet on both sides. It has a triangular / angle design. Later models use rounded contour design.

The highly collectible 1954's Leica M3 chrome, Double Stroke 700131 featured above has been packaged with a Leitz Wetzlar ELMAR 1:2.8/50mm during the auction. The lens was probably just to dress up the camera for the bidders. The shown optic has dual scales in feet/metres which would suggest it was a late model. The ELMAR 50mm f/2.8 was a re-computed optic evolved from the original Elmar with a slower f/3.5 and uses rare earth glass. The M bayonet mount lens was first introduced in 1957/8 but it had been released in both both SM and Bayonet.
