  1. From Neville (Tue Jun 20 18:20:35 2000 ):
I have a FM body and MD12 both work OK....Except the MD12 does not apear to power the light meter in the FM. Does anybody know how i can check if the FM or MD12 are at fault (What voltage should be present on the MD12 pins when i half depress the shutter button?) Many thanks.

  2. From Kam Nawus (Tue Jun 20 10:49:34 2000 ):
Anybody have the address for the new FM2n site??

  3. From MC (Tue Jun 20 00:25:40 2000 ):
TO Jusko: No, you can't use the MF16 on the original FM. The MF16 uses some electronic contacts to comminicate with the camera body. The original FMs were not equipped with these contacts. See the new FM2n site for further explanation. The usable Databack for FM/FE is MF-12 with a sync connection. However, the OLDER MF-12 can still work with FM2, FM2n, FE2 and even the FA (Via cable that plug into the PC terminal). See: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fefmshared/mf12/index.htm

  4. From jusko (Mon Jun 19 21:22:40 2000 ):
Can the data back MF-16 be used on FM ? Can the back cover be removed ? what is the accessory CF-27D used for ?

  5. From Hopkins (Sat Jul 15 11:46:58 2000 ):
**JOHN**: See the link at the FM2n's user manual: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/fm2n/fm2manual/index4.htm#Flash and then check here for all the various non-autofocus flash units made by Nikon to find a model that best match your criteria : http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/flash/sb1tosb21/index2.htm I think the scope that you are asking for can be quite extensive and chances are high that you may even get too confused with all the alternatives you can get - ALL because NIKON FM2 cameras can works virtually with any flash (For non-Nikon flash, just tape the flash ready light contact (On the hotshoe OR at the flash section) if your flash mounting foot has more non-dedicated contacts that do not match the additional FM2's terminal other than the camera's main X-sync. Third party flash such as Sunpak and Vivitar are very popular and reliable and they have produced some very popular flash models and generally, it should be cheaper (and sometimes carries with more features) than the Nikon's made units and if you specify Nikon's dedicated unit, you may even able to retain the flash ready light feature with your FM2 (Just check with a trustworthy and honest shop assistant, if therre is still any..).

  6. From John (Sat Jul 15 11:46:13 2000 ):
I have a friend that is looking for a flash for a Nikon FM2. Could some one please tell me what flashes are available and what would be the suggested flash to use a a middle one. We would like to purchase a used one for a good price or a new one at a good price too. Please email me at jognog@home.com for suggestions, places to call or some place on the Internet to go and look at the speedlight available. Thanks.....John

  7. From Wilson (Mon Jul 10 21:57:19 2000 ):
Anybody has an experience with the N-2TR power winder for Nikon FM2? The winding and mirror flapping sound loud with the winder. Would it cause damage to the camera?? Thank you for any information.

  8. From Francis (Sun Jul 9 15:21:34 2000 ):
I have just bought an FM10 ,gone through the reviews on the websites and feel a little disheartened by them. Can FM10 users give me any consolation to someone new to camera buying? By the way, it is my first body. Thanks.

  9. From MC (Sun Jul 9 13:19:00 2000 ):
Gentlemen ...: Before a small issue developed into something ugly, may I remind users of the message board to observe common courtesy , focus on the issue and be nice to one another. Thank. MC -- maintainer of this Board -- Sorry, for I have to exercise my duty and I have just deleted two recent messages posted here to avoid more confrontations. Thank for the cooperation.

  10. From Zen (Fri Jul 7 22:29:54 2000 ):
##Jusko##: It is indeed hard to conclude whether which meter reading of your FM2(n) or FE2 is correct. Anyway, I have similar camera combination as yours and did a test earlier, the resulting variation of display was occasionally were as what your have claimed. However, I think you have to take into consideration of the two entirely different method of meter display inside the camera, where FM2(n) uses 5 levels LED display and the FE2 is using match needle. The FM2 will only shows 1/3 stop changes BUT the FE2 shutter timing is running steplessly in AUTO mode and also quartz timed at all its manual shutter speeds. In practical term, the difference could be still less than 1/5 to 1/3 stop and should not post any differences in the eventual image output. Obviously, if you care and getting too serious about it - every time you think of shooting and you will be worrying the metering is not correct.

  11. From Richard G Betin (Fri Jul 7 13:42:59 2000 ):
Folks, My trusted FM has been through many trial and tribulations... It needs a good refurbishing and loving care...Who would you suggest in the Albuquerque,NM USA area? Love my FM, Richard

  12. From PJenning (Tue Jul 4 18:33:41 2000 ):
**TS**: AS LONG AS you have taken the second roll and okay with all the exposures, it will still fall back to the theory: You have misloaded your first roll with camera and that is absolutely NOTHING wrong the your FM10. You don't have to feel bad, because at times, even a hard working pro may find a roll came out blank...

  13. From TS (Mon Jul 3 23:59:11 2000 ):
I recently just bought an FM 10, and so far ive had real bad luck with it. I took my very first roll in for development and the whole thing was blank - unexposed. Im certain I loaded the film correctly since it advanced and rewound without a problem. The shutter seems to be fine. Does anyone know why this happened?

  14. From alison (Thu Jun 29 21:00:56 2000 ):
can anybody tell me what i should pay for an FM2T in malaysia and where is the best place to buy

  15. From Marco Levy (Mon Aug 7 04:29:28 2000 ):
I bought an FM2 acouple of years ago. I believe it's one of the originals. Does anyone know where I can get an eyepiece converter that lets me see through the viewfinder while wearing glasses? Thanks a ton!

  16. From geoff (Sat Aug 5 14:56:08 2000 ):
Hello, Is there a site anywhere that has alist of serial numbers and dates of production for Nikon FM2's. I have been offered an FM2 and would like to find out how old it is. Thanks Geoff

  17. From Mark H. (Mon Jul 31 14:34:25 2000 ):
A big thank you to all those who replied to my call for help regarding conversion of non-AI Nikon lenses. Much appreciated, Mark H.

  18. From Aaron (Wed Jul 26 03:10:03 2000 ):
I resently baught a new nikon FM-10. The first one I returned because it had a defective light meter. But when I got my new one it seemed to work right till I played around with the light meter. When I set the exposer at one sec. and the film speed at 200 I get a positive reading on the light meter even if I put the lens cap on. Do all the FM-10s have a light mewter that does that?

  19. From Lars (Tue Jul 25 16:47:33 2000 ):
Mark H. - You might find http://www.zi.ku.dk/personal/lhhansen/photo/repair/aimod/aimod.htm intersting regarding your question on AI modification.

  20. From Daren (Sun Jul 23 00:45:47 2000 ):
$$$Emilio$$$: Give up your Minolta XD-11 for a Nikon FM10 ? I don't think it is a good idea - because in any case, a camera will not make you a great photographer. If it was not for Minolta (and Canon) gave up the support for MC/MD mount lenses when they shifted to AF, the XD11 should be good enough for anyone who may consider pick up serious photography. That multimode AE camera by Minolta (Shutter priority, Aperture Priority, Manual Control) has given Canon some headache with their earlier shutter priority AE-1way back in the mid seventies before they answer the XD-11 with the Canon A-1. The XD-11 takes a Winder, Databack and even has dual mechanical backup speeds. It is an extremely well made camera and I think the built quality is hard to challenge by the Nikon FM10. Further, considering some fact her may help you a little to make up your mind, FM10 does not even accept any Nikon made motor drive, there is no databack option for you to consider and even its sync speed has no significant advantage over the XD-11 that was made 20 years earlier than it ! Worst still, I noticed the FM10 costs so much more in new condition to a used Minolta XD-11 in some advertisements on the Net. However, to be fair, FM10 does has some features which are btter than that of the XD-11, such as, its top shutter speed scale is a stop faster at 1/2000 sec than the XD-11's 1/1000 sec and perhaps the BEST it can offer is : it accepts many older Ai-spec optic and even with current Nikkor lenses, but IF you are serious about it, see if you can spare and cough out a little for a much better made Nikon FM2n OR if not - just keep your XD-11.

  21. From Mark H. (Fri Jul 21 18:06:34 2000 ):
I have a Nikon FM and have the opportunity to buy a 28mm lens and a 200mm lens (both Nikon and in very good condition). Both lenses are non-AI though. What are my options for conversion to AI for these two lenses?? Are conversion rings available as genuine or after-market parts?? Can rings from AI Nikon lenses be fitted directly to convert them?? Or is re-machining of the lens rings the only option?? Will the factory do it and is it worth it?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mark H.

  22. From emilio (Fri Jul 21 06:42:57 2000 ):
Hi! I'm trying to buy a brand new FM 10. It's a good idea to give away my old XD11 minolta to get a new FM10? Thanks,a confused buyer..

  23. From Kenneth (Thu Jul 20 13:51:17 2000 ):
Firstly I would like to say bravo to the folks who ve created this amazing web site with a wealth of information. (waffle start) My dads Zeiss which is still treasured, I seldom use it and wont take it away with me. A Mamiya - a fourth hand gift that did all I wanted it to do - take average pictures - though after lugging it up many muddy creeks, mountains, down abandoned mines, through caves, and finally down a gorge where it was invaded by loess (very fine silica dust from glaciers).....well lets just say it had had enough. I then decided the next camera, that I would buy, should be waterproof mainly to keep the muck and dust out, and being a student on a budget I decided to purchase a compact full-auto Cannon A1 waterproof SureShot, a camera with which I have taken many great shots and which has stood up to being bashed and dragged through mud mud and more mud. (waffle end) I now want a decent manual SLR that I can experiment with, take all over the countryside, and get more involved in photography - preferably a camera that is versatile and robust, an

outdoors camera. I am also looking for something that wont break the bank. After reading up, asking friends, and working for a while as a

dogs body in a studio I reckon a Nikon is the way to go. The question is which one - An FM10, an FM2 or maybe a Nikonos. From what Ive read the FM10 doesn t appear to be getting the best of wraps, on the other hand the FM2n appears to have a big following. What do I do???? How will these cameras hold up to the elements??? Can

soft spray housings be easily purchased for these cameras??? How risky is buying a second hand Nikonos??? Any advice? Cheers Ken

  24. From js (Thu Jul 20 02:25:13 2000 ):
I would like to know if you can use the FM-10 with a sync cord used for studio photography lighting equipment, as you can use the FM2. I want to buy a FM-10 but I need to know this to decide. Thanks.

  25. From Cor Bader (Tue Aug 22 00:54:28 2000 ):
Hello, all you Nikon usres. I have a few Non-AI lenses wich I wouls like to modify to AI. Does anybody know how? Are there modification sets for this. If so are these still for sale? Any information is welcome. I own a FT-2 for years now and just bought a FM-2n. It would be neat to convert the old lenses.

  26. From Barry (Mon Aug 21 19:14:37 2000 ):
Alright people, I need to know; which is the better shutter, the titanium or alloy? I have an opportunity to buy the FM2 with the titanium shutter, and have heard different things about both. Does anyone really know which is better? Thanks in advance.

  27. From Lars (Mon Aug 21 18:22:58 2000 ):
DonB - It sounds like you simply use a too short shutter time. Try with 125 or even 60

  28. From Sumant Singh (Sun Aug 20 02:49:37 2000 ):

Dusting off my ole FM. But Pictures are all horizontally cut off with part black and part picture. I bought a new flash unit but problem persists. Repair help will be greatly appreciated. I am quite meticulo us and wish to try this repair myself with your knowledgable assistanc e.Also,I am interested in making any suggested upgrades while doing this surgery. Also, recomendations for lenses other than my original 50mm 1:2 for family and sporting events {soccer/rugby} and nature type shots.

  30. From R. Isidro (Tue Aug 15 21:11:28 2000 ):
Thanks to your wonderfull site about the Nikon FM and the F, F2 series of cameras, I am enjoying using them again after hibernation on the closet for many years. My wife always said to me my pictures were better ten years ago than today. I guess using Prime lenses then rather than zooms had a big factor. I now use a 50mm f1.4 as my favorite family photos lens. Cleaned my Nikon F2AS (meter still works!) and is now my constant companion for daily routine.

  31. From Lars (Mon Aug 14 18:08:50 2000 ):
FM (with its hinged METER COUPLING LEVER and no MAXIMUM APERTURE INDEXING LEVER) has one of the best lens comaptibilities of all Nikon cameras. It only lacks mirror lock up to allow for the old super wides and fisheyes (having deeply protruding rears).

  32. From Wan (Sun Aug 13 11:59:51 2000 ):
can anyone tell me if an AF 35-70 lens be used with an FM body?? They seem to fit. But will there be problems? Thank you.

  33. From charlene (Sun Aug 13 06:23:56 2000 ):
Hi, I have an older FM2 body. The only lense that i have ever used is the original 50mm that I bought with the body. I am looking to purchase a differnt lense. Just one, more all purpose lense, to start. I am thinking something in the 20-80mm range. I also want to stick with Nikon. Any suggestions on which lense to seek? Also, what guidelines should I follow to determine capatability with my fully manual camera. I am aware that i sound like a complete beginner, but bare with me. Thanks for any info or advise that you may have for me.

  34. From Lars (Tue Aug 8 19:00:03 2000 ):
Marco - I am not aware of any accessory made by Nikon that can convert a non-HP finder into a HP ditto but you might want to look for a Ikelite Super-eye Magnifier, see also http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000qTX&topic_id=34&topic=

  35. From Jun Madrid (Mon Sep 18 11:07:17 2000 ):
Hi. I recently bought an FM2n. I was reading the manual and noted in the flash page that the SB15 is not mentioned as a flash which can be used on the Fm2n. The page mentions using Sb14 but mysteriously skipped the SB15. Is there a problem using the SB15 on the Fm2n? Pls advise .....

  37. From Frank M Dillard (Wed Aug 30 07:29:41 2000 ):
Greetings to all the wonderfull Nikon fans out there. I recently purchased a FM and I love the camera. I am having one problem that I need advise on. When using a non-AI lens I depress the DOF lever to get an accurate meter reading, every so often when releasing the DOF lever the camera will release the shutter taking a picture. Does anyone out there know whats going on? Maybe I'm doing something wrong as I just received this camera this week. Any information would really be appreciated. Thanks.

  38. From Livk Stanislav jr. (Wed Aug 30 05:28:47 2000 ):
Peace to all You Nikon users.I really have no doubts that Nikon Fm/Fm-2 are one of the best cameras ever made. The only problem I have is that here in Slovenia,Europe the lenses for Nikon (Ai/Ai-S)are hard to find.If you find them they are to expensive. So,I would like to ask if anyone of you,Nikon enthusiasts, has an info where can I buy lenses in USA,so that I can get it shipped in Europe. Thanks in advance.Stanko,Slovenia.

  39. From Jeff Bock (Tue Aug 29 07:32:23 2000 ):
My camera has been stolen. If this has happened to anyone reading this, I'm sure you know the feeling. Before I spend the money for a replacement I would love some input from the FM users of the world. The camera I lost was an FG that a friend had given me. It had a complete range of lenses and I was getting to love the images it could produce. So if anyone out there can point me to some good referance guides or can clue me into a system, a sad FG user should move to, please let me know. Maybe I should just look for a FG?

  40. From Kenneth (Mon Aug 28 13:56:17 2000 ):
**Barry**: Shutter: Barry, frankly, most of us are not full time professional, I would love to believe every information we share in the Net is correct that most midrange Nikon bodies provide a minimum shutter cycles of 50,000 exposures (By the way, that is equivalent to what an original Canon professional EOS-1 camera model provides) - but the point is, the durability of any version of the shutter would satisfy more than 99% of our need and expectation and safely claimed to last weekend users like us for the next 10-20 years with minimal level of hardware maintenance. There is no need to concern whether which version is superior, but rather I would like to pick up a shutter that is supported currently, which in this case an Aluminum Alloy type. Peace.

  41. From Kenneth (Mon Aug 28 13:44:51 2000 ):
**DonB**: Lenses: The choices with a proper selection of lenses depends very much with your "reach" factor. Wideangles (Or your standard lens) can also be used if you have the access to the event or be able to maintain close contact with the surrounding to cover the event. But generally we would need a long telephoto to overcome inaccessibility of getting in close. Frankly, a long telephoto 300mm lens is a bare minimum requirement for fast action sports in most public arenas. Nevertheless, to overcome lack of lens speed in most "economical" zoom lenses, if you can offset that by using faster films. IF you have a tight budget to spare, a used manual focus Nikkor zoom lens (Or third party lens) between 80-300mm is a good alternative. Nikon has not produced any manual focus zoom lens with such a specific zoom range, you may have to settle one from the 70-210E, 80-200, 100-300 or a newer AF 70-300mm zoom and AF 80-400mm.

Does the FM2n support TTL flash photography with an SB28 or will I have to set the flash unit by hand? I am looking to get a FM2n for a back up camera.

  46. From Pieu Sai (Thu Oct 19 13:58:31 2000 ):
I'm seriously thinking of buying FM2n as my backup camera. Could someone recommend which lens to buy as I'm not familiar with Nikon lenses. I'm looking for a well build standard zoom lens in the range of 28-80mm for both auto and manual focus lenses. Thanks.

I haven't visited this board for a while, but I would like to share some photos that were taken in February of this year with my Nikon FM2. Fortunately I was able to buy a few used Nikkor before my trip. The camera bag weighed a ton. This is my third FM first two were stolen. I refused to upgrade to auto-everything like everyone else.
