  1. From Rod Johnson (Thu Sep 23 10:57:45 1999 ):
    I need a owners manuel for a FM3097277

  2. From Trausti Tomasson (Thu Sep 23 06:10:24 1999 ):
Can anyone suggest a good flash light for the FM2n camera, preferably a Nikon flash.

  3. From cgb (Christian Becker) (Mon Sep 20 23:16:18 1999 ):
Well, let's enjoy the manual cameras as long as they are around. According to Stephen Gandy they may not be too long with us - if one or more of the BIG japanese camera brands might leave the business. Ok, let's see what 35mm can do today. Let me suggest: http://www.reportage.co.uk/

  4. From MC Lau (Fri Sep 17 22:07:05 1999 ):
It is indeed strange to me that Nikon and Canon, having turned out millions of camera bodies into the market in the last 2 decades, and did not find it viable to continue their repair and support services to the products. Leica had produced only about 25,000 units of the R3mot, and yet is able to repair the camera 20 years later, despite the lack of economic scale. I am inclined to believe that it is not the case as the manufacturer not being able to support the services, but rather they had chosen not to, so that they can sell more, new, camera bodies to the market. It is all about marketing. Aren't the users, who are always after the latest and the best, to be blamed as well? On the other note, aren't we fortunate that Nikon had chosen to keep its F-mount thro' all these years?

  5. From Graeme (Thu Oct 21 16:33:11 1999 ):
Great site. I'm interested in getting an FM and am wondering about using this camera with glasses. What needs to be considered when doing this, is an attachment required? Thanks

  6. From MC Lau (Thu Oct 21 15:32:23 1999 ):
+++ Karen +++ If you were to buy a new screen, the package comes with a tweezer and a hair brush. A tweezers from the lady's make-up kit should work fine, but you do need a steady pair of hand. And do be careful when cleaing the screen. Best

  7. From chuck (Thu Oct 21 12:15:11 1999 ):
Just perchaced a used FM Nikon #2443911 and need an operating or owners manuel. Any help would be greatly appriciated. thank you

  8. From adipurnomo (Wed Oct 20 14:11:14 1999 ):
send me regular news on nikon.I am using FM2 and c60

  9. From Karen (Wed Oct 20 08:09:07 1999 ):
I just bought a used Nikon FM and am happy with the camera. However, the focusing screen is a bit dirty, and I'd like to clean it. This requires removing the screen, and the FM model doesn't have interchangeable screens so I can't use the instructions available on-line for removing screens of the FM2/Fe/Fe2. Can anyone suggest how to get to that dirt behind the screen? I do see a tab on the side of the screen but don't think a pair of tweezers could lift it out. Is this a job for a pro?

  10. From Andrew Adler (Wed Oct 20 03:46:30 1999 ):
If you don't mind a second-hand unit, there's an FM2-T for sale in Louisville, KY at Chuck Rubin Photographics, (502) 452-6171. Chuck is a wonderful dealer (used stuff only) and his store is a browser's paradise.

  11. From Matt (Wed Oct 13 11:40:50 1999 ):
My fm2n's light meter will not stay up for more than a second or two, sometimes not at all. Put new batteries in it but no change. Is there a common problem with this model that maybe I'm not aware of? Any tips on what to do with it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm wanting to sell as soon as I can get it fixed.

  12. From MC Lau (Fri Oct 8 13:12:36 1999 ):
JWoods.... Interseting revelations you have on the commemorative issue of the FM2n in the year 2000. I have been told that it will be a commemorative camera to celebrate the new milineum. Year of thr dragon issue will probably attract primarily the Asian collectors, and excluded the interest of those in the rest of the world. Remember the Year of the rooster version of the Leica M6? It wasn't that great a seller as leica had hoped. Furthermore, are you sure that it will be a titanium version?

  13. From JWoods (Thu Oct 7 21:24:30 1999 ):
There are three versions (2 + 1) of the FM2n Titan model. The first was the 94 commercial version which some outlets are still keeping some display units, later there was a LE (Few hundred units) version that termed as "Year of the Dog" (I was told some outlets in Taipei, Taiwan still has small number in stock). Towards end of this year, Nikon will introduced a few thousand units (?) of the LE "Year of the Dragon" version. May be the earlier overwhelming F5 A has inspired them to come out something 'refreshing' for the new Millinium 2000...@##$$*&^!Why do they have to wait until year end ? The Yen is rising against the dollar !

  14. From R. Salazar (Thu Oct 7 13:30:46 1999 ):
Does anyone know a source for purchasing the Nikon FM2-T(titanium camera)? I have exhausted many resources without luck in finding the camera.

  15. From Lars (Tue Oct 26 03:50:36 1999 ):
John - I have no idea as to when it will stop working. You might want to consider the DB-2 (anticold battery compartment). It is a little box with two penlights (preferbly lithium), a cable and a connector that will screw into the battery compartment. The box can the stay inside your clothing.

  16. From John McEvoy (Mon Oct 25 21:45:27 1999 ):
I am planning to use my FM2n in Alaska next year, in temperatures of around -30 Deg. At what point will the batteries that power the Light Meter start to be affected by the cold?

  17. From Linus (Mon Oct 25 21:05:08 1999 ):
Hi Roy! Yep I'm still around. Laid low for a while after my trip 'cos this site took forever to load. I see you've been bitten by the FM2 bug too! Good for you! No I haven't got the 28mm yet, but I'm currently bidding on a 24mm manual focus on Ebay. I already have a 75-150/3.5 Series E for those uncooperative cats and dogs and I can tell you - it's a gem. India (Bombay) was nice but the poverty there has to be seen to be believed. It really brought me down to reality with a thud. Made me feel guilty about owning a luxury item like a camera while some people there had hardly anything to eat or drink. It really was a culture shock I tell you. Anyway, if you wish to chat, about Nikon stuff, photography or otherwise, you can reach me at the above email. Cheers mate!

  18. From Fred Lund (Mon Oct 25 10:39:40 1999 ):
Truly a trusted friend and companion to a new HP digital...

  19. From chuck (Sat Oct 23 13:08:42 1999 ):
looking to purchase an MD12 auto advance for my FM

  20. From Roy (Sat Oct 23 10:58:10 1999 ):
Hello, Linus. If you are reading this, you must still be alive and no longer on vacation. Did you get your 28mm? Mine is the cheapo AF, but it did a real nice job for me. After using my FM2 for a month, I am hooked for life. By the way, the 100mm E turned out to be perfect for things like dogs and cats, which refuse to pose for a 135mm. How was the trip?

  21. From Graeme (Fri Oct 22 15:38:04 1999 ):
Karen: Thanks for the tip. As long as I am able to use the camera 'straight out of the box' with glasses that will be fine. Once I'm up and running I'll worry about optional attachments, etc. Also, if I win the lottery in the next month or so, I'll definitely look into the F3HP :-)

  22. From Karen (Fri Oct 22 06:12:06 1999 ):
M.C. and Christian: thanks for responding! Yes, I suspected this was not a "do it yourself" job; fortunately none of those specks show up in a print, so there's no real rush to get it cleaned by a repair shop. The last roll turned out beautifully! Now here's a response for Graeme: you might want to consider buying one of those eyepiece correction diopters that screws into the viewfinder. I'm bidding on one now on eBay; they seem to run from $5.00-$15.00. If you go to eBay and do a search using the keywords "nikon correction", you'll get a list of such items returned. Am not sure if this solution will work, but for that amount of money it's worth a try. For me, wearing glasses and looking through the FM's viewfinder is fine most of the time; it's just a comfort issue. If you can afford to spend the extra $300, you might want to consider the Nikon F3HP, which is designed for people who wear glasses and had a excellent viewfinder.

  23. From Jim B (Fri Oct 22 00:59:40 1999 ):
I've just purchased an FM10 - I need a flash - Could someone tell me what to buy that would satisfy my needs. Something that will do the job and not hurt me in the wallet. Thanks

  24. From christian (Thu Oct 21 21:18:19 1999 ):
*Karen*, it's indeed a pro's job (as the FM does not feature removable screens). Since you bought it used have it cleaned by a local repairman/Nikon repair service. While you are at it you might anyway have it checked. This will not only lead to a clear view but might raise your confidense.

  25. From Timothy Blackwell (Tue Nov 9 21:07:53 1999 ):
I just got a Nikon FM. I was wondering if you can do multiple exposures with it easily?

  26. From Dan (Sat Nov 6 08:24:32 1999 ):
Hi, need help in finding an excellent flash match for my FM2n which I recently bought and still getting used to. I was told a Vivitar 283 would be a good one. Can you shed any light? Thanks

  27. From simon (Thu Nov 4 03:38:36 1999 ):
An answer for Karen- one option would be a circular polariser, though it would dramatically change your skies & buildings. It's also worth a) trying various different brand films at the same ASA to see which is sharpest, b) printing with a darker density adjustment, or c) trying a printer who use a machine with a Digital head, such as the Konica QD-21. As these machines use a CCD chip instead of lenses, the focus from the neg onto the paper is *much* sharper.

  28. From Simon (Thu Nov 4 03:31:28 1999 ):
Hello, all! I'm currently using a Chinon-badged Minolta x300 & 28-70. My father used to use an FM (and an F-801 when he got lazy), and I want to get a better camera. Is there a particular FM variation I should look out for? I hear the build quality of the FM2 doesn't compare to the FM. I manage a photography shop in Wimbledon, UK. pls email me as I don't have much time to browse!

  29. From Kelvin (Wed Nov 3 13:18:17 1999 ):
Just received my brand new FM2/T titanium from HK. What a handsome body!

  30. From Vikram Fotedar (Sun Oct 31 00:04:49 1999 ):
Hi This is Vikram, I'm 'bout to purchase a Nikon FMII and need some help in choosing a lens and flashgun for my camera. Advice sought. (compatibality charts would be great. Thanks.

  31. From tom quaranta (Sat Oct 30 06:33:48 1999 ):
My FM was stolen recently and Iam looking for a FM series replacement. Can anyone help me find one at a fair price?

  32. From Karen (Thu Oct 28 22:44:42 1999 ):
Hi, I just bought my first pre-AI lens for my FM; it's an early version of the 105mm portrait lens and very sharp. I'd like to use it to take candid shots of people while I'm travelling (no tripod). Can anyone share their experiences of what it's like to do stop-down metering on the fly? I do like to play with depth of field, and the fact that these pre-AI lenses don't have the aperture direct readout in the viewfinder might make this type of photography hard to do if I have to fiddle with the preview lever and also take my eye off the viewfinder to check aperture. Anyone have experiences to share? Also, this lens does not have the multicoating so it's supposed to produce photos with less contrast. Is there a filter I can add to increase contrast in color prints? It doesn't seem like a UV or skylight would be enough. Thanks.

  33. From Lars (Tue Oct 26 19:37:18 1999 ):
    C. Weissbart - FM does not have any dedicated flash. Since it has not got flash ready indication in the finder you can use any Nikon or third party flash with it.

  34. From granite (Tue Oct 26 10:29:29 1999 ):
Does the SB-15 count as a "dedicated flash" for an FM? Any ideas for a flash unit for this body?

  35. From Brian (Wed Nov 17 23:07:54 1999 ):
I am searching for a LEATHER case to fit a Nikon FM. Does anyone know the model# of the cases which will fit the FM? (CH-1, CF-7, etc.) If so please post to this message board or email to omdg1@aol.com.

  36. From Lars (Tue Nov 16 22:12:45 1999 ):
Dear Val - I have been recommended RUBBER CEMENT made by Pacer (ITEM 15119 @ http://www.pacertech.com/html/stationary.html). I have not found it yet here in Europe. This kind of glue makes it possible to take the leatherette off if the camera ever needs to be disassembled. Good luck.

  37. From Val (Tue Nov 16 10:40:05 1999 ):
The vinyl-leather on my Nikon FM body is beginning to peel near the edges I need advise: 1) how to glue it back on. 2) type of glue to use. 3) how to clean up in case I get some glue on the chrome or the vinyl-leather. Thank you in advance for any suggestion. Val.

  38. From Rob U (Mon Nov 15 10:12:33 1999 ):
I am looking to purchase a battery pack and lenses for an FM-2 for my wife as a christmas present. If anyone can direct me in a good direction it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a million.

  39. From JWoods (Sun Nov 14 13:32:57 1999 ):
The multiple exposure operation is the same among many Nikon bodies since it was regarded as a very convenient design since it was first shifted the lever on the Nikon FE in 1978. Bodies like the FM2, FM2n, FE, (FG ?), FE2 and FA. You can use here as a template (What happens to the FM2 & FM2n site, leofoo ? we are waiting... ): http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfeseries/fe2/fe2e.htm . However, the Nikon FM has a slightly different operational sequence: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/fm/part6.htm#multiexpose because the lever is not situated next to the film advance lever.

  40. From Mark (Sat Nov 13 05:22:44 1999 ):
I am wondering how to do mult exposures w/ my FM2. Thanks everybody.

  41. From Antonio (Fri Nov 12 10:45:27 1999 ):
I have been using my FM with a Linear polarizer for the first time. The prints I git back looked pretty bad. skin tones looked "pale" but overall exposures looked bad also. Is it necessary to use a circular polarizer with the FM? Conventional wisdom says a circular polarizer is not necessary on a fully manual camera. Is this true for the FM? Thanks Antonio Please respond to e-mail as I don't check web site regularly.

  42. From Alexandre Romoscanu (Thu Nov 11 06:47:02 1999 ):
Hi I have a problem with my Nikon FM2. From time to time (let's say evry 3rd roll) the film gets blocked. Forcing breaks the film, so that the only solution remains to roll the film back, losing a large part of the film. Does anyone have the same problem, and is there a "common" solution? Thanks in advance, Alexandre Romoscanu, Switzerland

  43. From Dan (Wed Nov 10 07:39:10 1999 ):
Thanks to Linus and Nguyen for their replies to my inquiry! I'm going to a camera show this coming Sunday and will be on the look out for reasonably priced lenses for my FM2n (w/ MD12). Would anyone advise me on which lenses to buy. The only lens I have is what came with the camera brand new (Sigma 28-80 Asph. 3.5- 5.6 macro). I want a fisheye; Ultra wide angle; and a telephoto like 300mm. Can anyone shed light on these? Thanks!

  44. From Timmy (Tue Nov 9 21:11:06 1999 ):
I just got a Nikon FM. I was wondering what the shutter is made of? How can you do multiple exposures with it?

  45. From moshe pulik (Mon Nov 29 02:55:12 1999 ):
need cost evaluation for NIKON FM+50mm F1.4 all gold ,in original factory translucent casing . base of casing is leather clad with engraved panel commemorating production of FM cameras.

  46. From MC Lau (Mon Nov 29 00:03:50 1999 ):
To Brain @@@@@ The CR-7 Semi soft case was meant for FE and FM with lenses up to 85mm. Hope it helps.

  47. From Lars (Sun Nov 28 19:52:43 1999 ):
After a little bit of research I have found that all Classical MF Nikon bodies (excl. F-601m and possibly excl. FE10) has pseudo-MLU.

  48. From Lars (Sun Nov 28 19:12:27 1999 ):
ric - Have a look at the fourth post below this one (third below your own posting!)

  49. From ric (Sun Nov 28 04:30:02 1999 ):
I'm looking for a second Nikon camera and have narrowed it down to either an secondhand FM2 or a new FM2n. Can anyone tell me the major differences between the two cameras.

  50. From Lars (Sat Nov 27 19:56:06 1999 ):
No FM-series Nikon has MLU. FM2 has Pseudo-MLU using self timer. I don't know about FM (or FM-10).
