Chiangmai ("Chiang Mai") is the second largest city in Thailand & an immensely popular tourist destination. Thai temples in this province, by unofficial counts, probably is closed to 380 in numbers) simply because, Chiangmai, due to its strategic interchanged between many northern towns and cities, which has made to be the center of Buddhism in Northern Thailand. One of the famous modern icon of the city is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (or just referred as Wat Suthep). This old city (it celebrated its 700th anniversary back in 1996) has many fascinating indigenous cultural identity in its own right. If your primary interest is to visit religious Buddhist temples ("Wat" in Thai), Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep that locates at midway to the hilly raincatchment region, provides a sweeping view overseeing the entire city can be your first preferred choice (Inside the temple, there are plenty of fascinating structures within). Some tour guides may also suggest Wat Chiang Man, which was reputedly built back in AD. l297 - widely acknowledged as to be the oldest in Chiangmai It carries a rich, colourful background as being the residence for the originator of the city of Chiangmai, King Mengrai. Another popular tourist spot is the Wat Phra Sing ("Pra Pra Singh") (AD. l297) which houses a1,500 years old Phra Thongtip Buddhist image. It was also believed to be the original monastery which has the famous Emerald Buddha that currently stationed at Phra Keow, Bangkok. Others temples of interest such as Wat Chedee (also can called "Chedi") Luang where the Emerald Buddha was once enshrined; Wat Suan Dok, AD.1371 (also pronounced as "Wat Suan Dorg") where the ashes of Chiangmai's Royal Family are to be kept. Wat Bupharam, which has the world's largest teak wood made Buddha image. Wat Ku Tao that locates north (outskirts of the city) and perhaps many more than I cannot identify them. In fact, every few miles, you can see a Buddhist Pagoda somewhere in your sight. So, among all these lovely historical places, where am I suggest to bring you ? Errr ... the day before I left on my recent trip back to Bangkok, my friend Weerapong Srivichai, who wrote as a weekly columnist on Buddhist imageries for Chiang Mai News, the local daily; he insisted must bring me to visit a unique local temple/monk. The word "Lanna" came in association, while he drove me there, he tried to give me a rough idea what the temple is all about ....
