Bought my "F" at the PX in Saigon in 1968. Love it! But haven't used it in 10 years and discovered the meter doesn't work when I put in new batteries a few days ago. (Batteries were $3.99 each!!!) Ideas? Is this a repair shop issue?

Hi Rob: Unless you have some experience with camera disassembly, this is something that I would send in to a repair shop. There is a good directory of camera repair services at

I have a Phototomic FTn Meter for my Nikon F. The meter is working but shows a different speed right of the needle in the viewfinder than what has been selected on the camera. I have double checked to make sure the meter engages the post on the speed knob like it should and that the speed on the side meter indicator is the same on the knob. Is there a simple fix for this or does it need to go in for repair. Thanks, Rob

Hi Mary:

For the majority of 35mm SLRs, the digital revolution has severely undercut values. Top line cameras like the Nikon F have held up better, but there are a lot of F's around. I would guess your camera to be worth something on the order of magnitude of $100 - 125; to get a better idea, look at completed sales on eBay.

Hi Don: There is a directory of camera repair services at - it's indexed by location so you can find someone convenient. Cleaning your lens diaphragm should not be too difficult or expensive.

I have a 1960 vintage F with the 5.8 cm lens. The camera is fine but the lens is in need if a good cleaning. The diaphragm blades have oil on them and are sticking upon shutter release.

Can anyone recommend a good shop to do the work? I'm in Dayton, Ohio but mailing it off to a shop in the US is no problem.

I have owned a Nikon F since the late 60's. I have purchased 4 newer models over the years, so this one has been on the shelf. I just bought my son the D3100 and wanted to show him my old cameras. I attached the 55 1.4 mm lens with the bayonet mount and it would not engage with the viewfinder. I have a 135mm with the bayonet mount and it would also not engage. There seems to be obstruction from a small piece of metal adjacent to the mount that will not allow the f stop ring to move all around on the 55mm and the 135mm. There never has been any damage to the camera and I have traveled around the world with that camera for a decade and never experienced this issue. I have another 24mm lens, bayonet mount without that piece of metal and it works perfectly fine. I don't get it. Why now? What has happened and how can I get this fixed? Thanks

Am I right to say the Nikon F body Film Load reminder is half covered with black plastic since 1972 onwards or even earlier?
