Some Selective Digital SLRs - Message Board/Guestbook

Whether like it or not, owners of Digital Still SLR cameras have similar problems with computer users - the hardwares tend to phased out very rapidly & replaced with new models, while the ultimate goal of a full frame 35mm format with realistic prices, older models of Digicam may present some support issues - while I hope the creation of this Message Board provide some form of relief to exiting owners as well as those who may intend to invest into one of the used units as prices are more realistic as compared to many newer models. Some of the opinion presented within the site was entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal. So, this forum is intended to provide a channel for all to make use of it to present your own individual views. Lastly, we can make use of this Board to learn from each other and share experience so as to improve our skill. As I don't have much time upkeeping as well as keeping up with so many new Digital SLRs that keep streaming up from the respective manufacturers; so, as for now, just treat this website as MIR's contribution to the Network for the photographic community. Lastly, please respect ownership of various brands and AVOID touching on sensitive topics (such as my brand is better than yours...). Enjoy.

As this site is specifically created for this purpose - so, please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you. Question....

Will an older F mount lens (actually a Vivitar with Nikon F adapter) be usable on a Nikon D80 digital camera? Thanks

I own a Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera and consider myself a photography enthusiast.
I wanted a small compact camera with me when I dont want to lug around my DSLR + lenses and equipment.
After a previous good experience with the Canon A720 IS, the new A590 IS seemed like a good choice.

LeeG:- your "small" has not been defined. The Micro-Nikor is a very good lens and neither I think the camera has any issue. Generally, you would require to find an outline for the autofocus system to work in any AF SLR. The closer it goes, the inmmenesly shallow depth of field which causes the subject has little room to find fosusing. So, you have to point the AF to specific subject with a defined outline for the focusing detection to hunt the right focus. Generally, for large magnification, manual is a better way. Last, NOT ALL lenses (even the Micro-Nikkor) has its limitation for closest focusing distance. The trick is to get the right magnification inthis case, 105/2.8 is 1:1.

Well, well.... my issue is with my 2 - D2X Nikons. They are twice a year at Nikon Service. Each time, I am charged between $200 to $400 a camera, a service. My last service was $697.00. No explanation what was done. Service people at Nikon are "ghosts". Nobody will never pick up phone. Once we left a phone ring for 60 minutes - no response. If you write a letter or email - nobody responds. Nikon's approach dealing with their long time customers in non-existing. If I run my business like Nikon - I would be living under the bridge long time ago.

Too bad I have 30 year worth of Nikon's equipment, including two of each cameras made since 1979 and every lens. Otherwise I would shoot Canon long time ago....

Too bad Nikon people don't care....

Can I join in and offer my thought here too ? Both opinion are true and have some room for further debates. I do know that remark by leo was 5 years ago but It is difficult - as Rick said, the digital imaging has too big of a margin (profit) during the early days (basis: most Japanese manufacturers had a turn around financially with the new emerging medium for a cycle of about 5 years). And everyone is slowly facing the problem again due to intense competitions among them now - prices are pulling down, technical spec are higher which indirectly involves higher development cost and trimming down the margin. I guess one of the area that had really put off any idea of a digital film back was the huge P&S market (it is the real profit centers for all since the mid '80 onwards, NOT the SLRs), today, P&S digital with easily 10 megapixels from a good label can be available at USD300-400 bucks now, this potentially had killed off any external attempt (considered as threats to them) with such an idea designed for analogue bodies. But from another angle, if ever Kodak/Fuji had started this years ago, it could also be possible because they can proportionally lowering their initial investment by steady income if selling those possibilities proved viable and well received by consumers.

Perhaps, if one is/was smart, the Company would select bodies that shares the same film back as system accessories e/g. Nikon FM series, may be FE series need a little slight touch here and there to fit the back, as for the Canon A series, T series each is almost having the same configurations at the film back. The last possibility is, of course work along with the original label and sell the film back as optional acccessories (.. just add a sticker or print a label on them, they did got away with the FM10, Canon T 50 right ?). haha ..good discussion topic.

Hey.. why they are no funding for someone to invest into universal digital back ? Instead of provides funding to wasteful wall streets financial giants.. I tend to agree with leo that " ..it makes plenty of business sense as they are literally millions of analogue SLRs out there. I think Kodak (or Fuji) with dying film businesses and with their knowhow on previous research on Nikon/Canon Digital SLR film back adaptation and/or conversion could help to sustain a business cycle of at least another 10 years for them to find other viable new businesses venture... Kodak digital color / compression management was still among the best in the business ...they last produced a film back adaptation on 6 megapixels Nikon/Canon (excluding their own label, the last of their attempt with a 14 megapixels DCS-14 series - getting a film back in 10 megapixels spec should not be too much of a problem. The whole trouble is, Kodak used to practice "Killing the goose that laid the golden egg" by selling their kit at ridiculous prices, management was at fault, I guess when years ago - they were easily the pioneer as well as the kingpin in this medium ... if they ever had the foresight in thinking of mass market appeal during that period, they wouldn't be in current state right now". Good thought !
