Some Selective Digital SLRs - Message Board/Guestbook

Whether like it or not, owners of Digital Still SLR cameras have similar problems with computer users - the hardwares tend to phased out very rapidly & replaced with new models, while the ultimate goal of a full frame 35mm format with realistic prices, older models of Digicam may present some support issues - while I hope the creation of this Message Board provide some form of relief to exiting owners as well as those who may intend to invest into one of the used units as prices are more realistic as compared to many newer models. Some of the opinion presented within the site was entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal. So, this forum is intended to provide a channel for all to make use of it to present your own individual views. Lastly, we can make use of this Board to learn from each other and share experience so as to improve our skill. As I don't have much time upkeeping as well as keeping up with so many new Digital SLRs that keep streaming up from the respective manufacturers; so, as for now, just treat this website as MIR's contribution to the Network for the photographic community. Lastly, please respect ownership of various brands and AVOID touching on sensitive topics (such as my brand is better than yours...). Enjoy.

As this site is specifically created for this purpose - so, please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you. Good but Pricey as at now. Nothing is better than a working solution in a digital film back. There are some who has made for the Haslebald and Mamiya. Long ago there was a Company who had made a big huhah on such possibility. Nothing came out but the 40 million of Nikkor lenses and millions of film based SLR cameras has became a potentially very viable commercial project. Probably it took Nikon to do it after their sales get sluggish (long way to go-man). Last - isn't stupid why can't made the camera in a modular form and let users decide how to set up the camera for respective assignment ? The F6 has learned from the F5. The D3 sticks to F5 with no option.

Nikon unveils full-frame D3 digital SLR. 12 Mega pixels Nikon D3. Good news is, all lenses (including the post 1977 Ai Nikkor manual focus lenses can be used !). Similarly, the new DX lenses also can (but only at 5Megapixels). You can read from the link I provided up there for more details.

This site appears to be a treasure for me! The info provided is so extensive and detailed....esp for those "historical models". What I will suggest is to include more recent cameras(such as EOS-1DsMKII, 5D, Nikon D80, D200 and the successor in the future). I also would suggest including more accessories such as remote/cable release.

Is the Nikkor 105 mm lens with a PN-11 extension tube compatible with the digital Fuji S5 Pro camera body? I am buying a camera body only and would like to know if i can still use my Nikkor lens for close-up photography. Thanks.

The DCS Pro/N is using the basic framework of the highly successful F80 to construct. It has some issues with older MF lenses. Typically, as I downloaded a guide for lens compatibility for you to refer (from Steve Site):

Use a CPU lens (except IX-NIKKOR) with your camera. D-type AF lenses provide access to all available functions.

If you use a non-CPU lens, F-- appears in place of the aperture indication in the Top Status LCD and viewfinder. You must set or confirm aperture using the lens aperture ring.

In addition:
* You must use Manual Exposure mode. (The shutter will not release in other exposure modes
* The exposure meter cannot be used.
* Aperture cannot be set using the Sub-Command dial.

So, seemingly you have to use conventional MF Nikkor lenses to operate this digital SLR camera. However, I like the ISO 80 of the DCS Pro/N provides as it offers a lower ISO at 80 - MOST Nikon models can't even offer this (at most ASA 100). Canon did a better job here. You do know Kodak has announced discontinuation of this model ? See below of a post. Sad.. it is the only full frame DSLR uses Nikkor lenses.

I am very interesting in buying a 600mm f/4 or f/5.6 Nikkor to hang onto my Kodak DCS Pro SLR/N. However, I dont have the funds to buy the latest or newest version of this lens. I'm shopping for a used one.

I just tested a 600mm f/4 ED MF lens on my DCS Pro and while it mounted fine, manually focused fine, my camera would not meter any exposure. My viewfinder display would show a shutterspeed, but no f/ value and changing the lens f/ setting did not alter my camera's displayed shutterspeed. I could not find a way to quickly identify any exposure setting regardless of camera mode setting (manual, shutter, aperture priority).

Admittedly, this was an early, older 600mm lens. As I continue to look for used lenses, what feature must the lens have to be able to communicate with my camera some exposure combination (f/ value & shutterspeed)? Autofocus? AIS? Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Focusing screen: I do know D1X/H and D2X/H has options for that E grids screen (excellent accessory for architectural shooting and photo composition). The D1 uses/shares the F100 grid E too. The D100 uses a FIXED B-type Bright View Clear Matte screen II. Others not sure:

Some models like the Fuji S2 Pro provides grid on demand feature instead of installing the screen physically. See:

By the way, it is a great site here !

Maskon:- Scroll down a few messages on this message board, guide/use of manual focus Nikkor lenses on Nikon Digital SLR cameras is there. Higher end models offers excellent backward compatibility with MF Nikkor lenses. Newer models doesn't show exposure data even if they can be used in certain exposure modes or some entry models such as D40 - it even don't accept MF Nikkor. Nikon Europe has the spec sheets that says f0r the 10Mpixels Nikon D40X:

Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts Type G or D AF Nikkor
1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported,
2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus,
3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus,
4) Other AF Nikkor (Excluding lenses for F3AF)/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II,
5): Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic rangefinder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster. (IX Nikkor lenses can not be used).

If I didn't read it wrongly, the part on the G-Spec AF Nikkor was not fully supported as it will revert AF back to MF was a joke ! I can understand older MF Nikkor may not be fully compatible as the camera was an AF camera. But the AF-D and AF G behavior is something that I cannot accept.
