  1. From Terry Carraway (Mon Feb 26 07:46:58 2001 ):
Gerry R. & Simon - The A-1 is totally stepless when it picks either shutter speeds or aperture. It uses whatever it needs, f4.0 or f4.1 or f4.2 or 1/60 or 1/61 or 1/62. In Program mode both aperture and shutter are stepless. Yes, it is a pretty impresive feat.

  2. From Butch Schultz (Sun Feb 25 07:17:38 2001 ):
Hi, I have a Canon A-1 and I'm looking a mint or new base plate and a film door for it. Does anyone have or know where you can get these items? Also I have the Canon A winder and it's noisy, does anyone know if it can be lubricated? Thanks, Butch

  3. From Simon (Sun Feb 25 00:47:51 2001 ):
Could some one tell me what the difference between a Canon winder A and a Canon winder A-1. Is the winder A-1 just for the Canon A-1 camera? Thank you

  4. From Simon (Sun Feb 25 00:41:01 2001 ):
Gerry R, Good question! The A 1 will use any shutter speed between the normal settings 1/60, 1/250 and so on. What I would like to know does it set the aperture between * stops when used in the shutter mode. Thank you.

  5. From Gerry R (Sat Feb 24 22:20:46 2001 ):
Here's a question I have wondered about for years ..when the A1 is in aperture priority, and the camera chooses the shutter speed - does the shutter speed go to the traditional values / settings that we've all become acustomed to ?? meaning, does it go to 1/60, 1/125. 1/250 ...or will the camera choose shutter speeds that fall in-between, like 1/317 .... 1/81 .. 1/424 ...... - All things considered, it doesn't matter so much - as it makes a statement as to the ability of the camera .. thanks !

  6. From Terry Carraway (Fri Feb 23 20:11:59 2001 ):
Valerie - Probably not. First check the bottom of the flash hot shoe. How many contacts? If there is only one, then you will have to set the camera properly. If it has the extra contacts, it may be a dedicated flash. In that case it should set the camera to the proper settings. One way to check is that no matter what the camera is set to, if the flash is attached, on, and ready, the camera should switch to 1/60 second shutter speed , if the flash is talking to the camera properly.

  7. From Terry Carraway (Fri Feb 23 20:05:58 2001 ):
C.R. - Most of the third party lenses for Canon FD mounts work and communicate the same as Canon lenses. However, in general, Canon lenses are better quality than third party lens. The Canon 35-105 f3.5 is an very nice lens with a very useful range. I liked mine so much I bought a spare. For longer lengths, the 80-200s tend to be better than the 70-210, with the 80-200 L series being VERY nice. In third party, the older Vivitar Series 1 70-210 is about the only one I would consider buying.

  8. From Terry Carraway (Fri Feb 23 20:02:57 2001 ):
Susan - Please do not use all caps, it is like SHOUTING. The only parts available are in the hands of some repair places or by getting other broken cameras that are not broken the same way yours is.

  9. From Thanarat (Fri Feb 23 12:52:05 2001 ):
I've just recieved AE1-program from my sister and its condition is no good.I try to make it better so, now i looking for parts and acc. store .Kindly advise where i can find it. <..anyway i lived in Thailand.> Thank you.

  12. From Thomas (Fri Mar 2 13:45:01 2001 ):
Tracie i have a manual I can fax to you, I do not have scanner capabilities though.

  13. From Scuttle (Fri Mar 2 09:38:48 2001 ):
David, Try this take a light reading with shutter set at 1/60 sec. of your subject. Take the lens off auto and set the aperture to what the camera indicate. Now set your 199A to an auto setting that indicate an aperture larger than what the lens is set at. (Larger aperture = lower #. F2.8 is large F 22 is small) Remember to set the ASA on flash to the same as the camera. Another way is just leave camera, lens and flash on auto but set ASA on the flash to double what the camera is set at. (Camera ASA set on 100 ASA flash ASA set on 200ASA or 400 ASA) Good luck and please keep us informed.

  14. From david collyer (Fri Mar 2 06:23:43 2001 ):
Can anyone help me to understand fill-in flash when using an A1 combined with a 199A flash. On dedicated flash I seem to overexpose the subject a fair bit on close ups. Thanks Dave

  15. From Terry Carraway (Wed Feb 28 08:44:37 2001 ):
Simon - I would not try an EOS flash on an A Series. It will probably work, but without much automation. The best Canon flash to get is the 299T. The 277T or 199A are also nice choices.

  16. From Terry Carraway (Wed Feb 28 08:43:24 2001 ):
Tracie - You can read the manual on this site, start with the links at the bottom of the page. If youwant to buy a hard copy, try John Craig (www.craigcamera.com). They also show up on eBay fairly often. There is a guy how sells copies of the manuals to end every Sunday early evening (PST).

  17. From Simon (Tue Feb 27 21:18:32 2001 ):
Terry & Kirby, Thanks for the information, This is one super message board. I have one more question please, some one on eBay is selling a Canon 420EZ speedlite, they claims it will set shutter speed and aperture OK but will not work in auto mode. Q 1, isn t shutter speed and aperture the only auto settings on my AE-1 & AE-1P when I am using a Flash? The person said the 420EZ was made for Canon EOS, Q2, Will this flash work on a AE-1/ AE-1P?

  18. From Kirby Chilton (Tue Feb 27 13:07:18 2001 ):
Simon- My Power Winder A2 manual says that it can be used with A-1, AE-1 Program, AL-1, AE-1, AV-1 and AT-1. However, when using the A-1 or AE-1 Program, Canon's remote control accessories can be attached to the Power Winder A2.

  19. From Tracie (Tue Feb 27 03:18:46 2001 ):
I have an AE-1 camera that someone in my family gave me, but the instruction manual couldn't be found. Are there any web sites where I could either download a PDF of the instruction manual or even purchase a copy? I couldn't find anything on Canon's web site.

  20. From Terry Carraway (Mon Feb 26 07:48:34 2001 ):
Simon - There are two Canon Power Winders. The Power Winder A and the Power Winder A-2. The Power Winder A will work with any Canon A series camera. The Power Winder A-2 will only work with the A-1 or AE-1P. The A-2 also offers a single frame advance capability.

  21. From Simon (Fri Mar 9 07:19:10 2001 ):
Gordon, My uncle use Winston to repair his A-1s 2-repair store said one of his A-1 was not repairable and this guy fixed it, serviced it, and returned it in 7days for a lot less than the other stores charged for just cleaning and service. My uncle said he use s this board but I have not seen his name on here in the pass 3 weeks I have been looking.

  22. From TomR (Fri Mar 9 03:13:23 2001 ):
Peg, From late 2000 catalogues I had available B&H offered an A-1 in "8" condition at $219 and KEH had one in EX condition at $299. KEH also listed an EX+ condition A-1 at $429 but that may have been a misprint. Prices for bodies only, but with guarantees. TomR.

  23. From peg (Thu Mar 8 06:57:42 2001 ):
I've been following a canon A-1 on ebay and I have no idea of the current worth, right now bids are hovering around $200, description says it is brand new w/ 28mm lens, I would appreiate anyone giing me some informationon how much to pay. I just ook up this hobby and have become absorbed in bw, I want to purchase a good used auto camera that takes crisp shots - thanks for your feedback!

  24. From Gordon Page (Thu Mar 8 04:35:55 2001 ):
Canon A1. Does anyone know why I have to shift the on-off lever from the "A" position back to the "L" position and then back to the "A" position to take consecutive photographs? Pressing the "Battery Check" button does the same thing as shifting the lever back and forth, which clears something, then I can shoot the next frame. Otherwise I can only shoot one photo at a time. I installed a new battery, twice; no luck

  25. From Wolfgang Froech (Thu Mar 8 03:25:38 2001 ):
Hi, does anyone know where i can get a 7.5mm f 5.6 circular Fish-eye lens for my AE1 programm ?

  26. From Natasha (Mon Mar 5 23:49:16 2001 ):
Hi, does anyone have, or know where to find, scheme of how Canon A-1 looks when disassembled? I would like to know how to remove top plate, and how this camere looks on the inside. Thanks!

  27. From Karen (Mon Mar 5 10:55:24 2001 ):
David, I had the same problem with over-exposure while playing with macro photography. What you need is a Canon Speedlite 011A, it's for close-up photography, and you can find it cheap, I got mine for ten bucks!! You can use ASA 100 or 400. It's a great little flash, you will love it!

  28. From Cindy (Mon Mar 5 06:47:14 2001 ):
Just recently purchased an AE-1 Cannon 35mm camera on ebay and the book doesnt come with it. Any suggestions on where to get one and also what type of flash would work with it? thanks

  29. From Scuttle (Sun Mar 4 08:42:52 2001 ):
Chris, I don't know about the Promaster! I would set the shutter at 1/60 sec.to be sure, but if the flash has 3 pins on the foot and it is a dedicated Canon flash it should set the shutter speed. Please keep us informed.

  30. From Chris (Sun Mar 4 04:10:07 2001 ):
Using Promaster FTD 5500 flash with my AL-1: Promaster's manual is a joke, and of course, I lost my Canon manual ages ago. Do I have to use the 1/60 sec. flash setting on my camera? Promaster seems to indicate not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  31. From Megan (Sat Mar 17 04:37:15 2001 ):
I recently inherited an AE-1 Program from my Dad for the photo. classes I'm taking at school and obviously he could not find an owners manual. I was told I could download one off the internet, does anyone know where I can do that? Or any other way I can get my hands on one? Thanks, Megan

  32. From Mike C (Fri Mar 16 06:56:55 2001 ):
I have an AT-1 I purchased recently that has some "cleaning stains" on the prism surface just above where the mirror locks up. Is there any safe way to clean them? They show up as smudges in the viewfinder and makes it hard to focus correctly. Besides it's very distracting.

Hi does anyone know of a good honest place to get my AE1 program camera serviced. Its a great camera all I need is to get it cleaned, and checked by someone authorized, or who really knows this camera good. I live in connecticut and do not want to send it to just anyone. Also what should I expect to pay for a cleacing. Any help will be appreaciated. Thanks Chet

  41. From Jr (Tue Mar 20 19:19:27 2001 ):
I have an A-1 that I let a friend borrow. Now that I finally got it back it will not work in the AE modes. When I set the aperture to the "A" mark I get "EEEE EE". I looked thru the manual and found the supposed solution on page 64. I put the film advance in the retracted position, push the multiple exposure lever to the left, and turn the film advance lever. When I do this I then get a normal LED reading, but, when I push the shutter button nothing happens. If I take the aperture ring off the "A" then it will take a picture. If I put the aperture ring back on "A" I get the "EEEE EE" back again. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  42. From michael (Mon Mar 19 21:17:50 2001 ):
I have acquired two AE-1 bodies. One works fine the other appears to be throwing a tantrum. When the shutter release button is depressed half way, both LEDs inside flash hysterically. I'm thinking light meter. Any ideas?

  43. From Maboryge (Mon Mar 19 06:48:10 2001 ):
I realy need instructions to A-1, if you could help me I'll be very thankfull.M.Aborygena.

  44. From Juan Lopez (Sun Mar 18 21:21:40 2001 ):
I just bought an old AB-46 automatic flash unit. Its mount is broken and can not fit the camer'as hotshoe. I intend to use on a AE/1 program. Is there any problem with such a camera? Is there any online manual? Is there any place where a can send to rapair? By the way, shall you are interest in natura photo, Venezuela has a place even better than Pantanal-Brasil. Just ask me...

  45. From John Simis (Sun Mar 18 19:28:43 2001 ):
Hi there, I just changed my AE-1 for an A1-camera in very good condition, only there is one little part missing; the little enclosure-ring around the red led on top of the camera. I am wondering if there is a way to get this little part? Kindly advise where i can find it. Thank you, John (The Netherlands). hanks

  46. From David (Sun Mar 18 07:47:36 2001 ):
I have an AE-1 and yesterday I droped it. It wasn't a violent drop but, at first the shudder would go off when I winded it. I fixed that problem by taking apart the winding mechanism and puting it back together. But now the light meter keeps saying that there is not enough light. Anyone know what to do?

  47. From Kirby Chilton (Sun Mar 18 03:17:27 2001 ):
    Mike B.
You might also look for a Canon external battery pack A. It replaces the battery with an adapter that connects to a pack that holds 4 or 8 AA cells.

  48. From TomR (Sun Mar 18 01:11:59 2001 ):
MikeB, Don't know if a four hour exposure will kill the battery but what have you got to lose other than a battery. Am curious though about how you'll maintain image stability on film plane over four hours.

  49. From Mike B (Sat Mar 17 22:57:52 2001 ):
I am considering getting a used AE-1 or A-1 for astrophotography. This will require long film exposures of up to 4 hours for each shot. Can anyone tell me how long the battery will hold the shutter open before it goes dead??? Will I be using up an endless supply of bateries?? Thanks Mike

  50. From Anne Frost (Sat Mar 17 09:38:54 2001 ):
I have a Canon AL-1 and am interested in buying a macro lens. Any suggestions?
