HELP!!! I have a Canon F1. Recently, the crank came off when I pushed the button in the front to pull out the crank and open the back door to take the film out. Now, my film is stuck in there and I can not open the camera's door. Can I fix this myself? I see no broken part! Anyone can help? Thanks Andre

Sandi Young - There's a copy of the F-1 manual online at http://www.canonfd.com/f1oma.htm which may be of help. There's also a Hove book called "Complete User's Guide to Canon Modern Classics" by Harald Franke which has a useful chapter on the F-1 but it's probably out of print now. The F-1 is a FINE camera, enjoy...... Cheers, Mark.

I am the new owner of a used Canon F-1, which appears to be in excellent shape. Did not come with an instruction manual. This F-l is a move-up from my AE-1 which I love! Did I make the right choice and where would one find an instruction manual? Just paid $300 for this baby at a camera show. Did I pay too much? Thanks for any & all help & info. Sandi

A while back I had the oportunity to compare my Vivitar Macro100mm f2.8 to a Canon Macro 100mm f4. The Vivitar, (not-Series 1) is superior. The Vivitar Macro 100mm f2.8 is a rare lense. Normally I see their 105mm version. I cannot speak for it. My other non-Canon made glass is a Tokina ATX 150mm-500mm f5.6. Another outstanding piece of glass! Its fast enough to hand hold 500mm in a pinch. And somewhat compact considering its focal length. You could buy one new until Feb 2002, when they became discountinued. This would compare to the 150mm-600mm f5.6 Canon L Series which is impossible to find. I would love to compare one sometime, but they are so rare I doubt one will come up locally, ever. And the extra $2500 would be difficult to justify. I agree that Canon FD glass is almost always superior to aftermarket lenses. Lindy

I would never give up my F-1 and Canon lenses (none of which are the super expensive L's). However, it is possible that some other company can do a few things better than Canon. The Kiron 28 f2 seems extremely sharp at the mid apertures and shows little or no curvature of architectual lines at the edges of the frame. On the other hand, the performance of the Kiron at f2 is so bad that they should have made it an f2.8. I probably will sell the Kiron because they have a chronic aperture lever problem. Kiron made the legendary Vivitar Series I lenses, so they are a good company. Contax makes an excellent 28 f 2.8, and Olympus' 28 f2 is a great one, too. I love the 28, but not enough to base my choice of a camera on that alone. Canon's reliability means a lot.

Hi Doug Nelson, I just read your letter on Canon vs Kiron to remove “curved walls or roof lines”. I think it’d pay you to buy a good book on View Camera operation. What you’re trying to correct for is, I believe, simply perspective distortion that is caused by ANY lens, especially wide angle ones. A view camera has the capability to correct for this distortion(s). As a long-time Canon user, I do beg to differ on the quality issue however. I seriously doubt that Kiron (or most any “off brand” lens is better than a Canon. Another thing you might look into is a Canon PC (Perspective Control) lens. They are pricey but can do a lot that a view camera does only it does it on the tiny 35mm negative. Good shooting, Al Hodgkins

I have a Canon F1N with the AE viewfinder. I have a high-speed motor drive attached to the camera and an array of Canon lenses: 20mm F1.8/35mm f1.8/50mm f1.2/70-200mm zoom 300mm f3.5/400mm f4.5 - I also have attachments such as the Canon angle viewfinder. I have a 6-filter set for special effects for each lense size and a b/w filter set. I have a macro-closeup lense filter set (4 pcs). And a Nikon flash unit. I have all of the original manuals for both the camera and the motor drive. I have the original Canon box it came in. Since I purchased it in Japan, it still has the Yen price sticker on it. Anyway, I may be interested in parting with it all. Anyone have any ideas by way of value for this? I know what I paid for it but what's it worth now? All of it is in mint condition.
