I recently decided to buy an F1, just to have a manual/mechanical camera (I have an EOS system), and because here in Argentina prices of used equipment in dollars plummeted together with the peso, and found one with FD 50/1.4, which shows little outside wear (all for around 130$). I was wondering if someone has a list of things to check for correct operation when buying such a camera (or objections to buying one of these without any warranties). If so, let me know, and thank you very much.

Hi Guys,
I own several Nikon F2 cameras with a range of Nikon lenses ( I know), but have just taken the plunge and bought TWO Canon F1s. I'm going through that state of confusion as to which camera is the best. I would like to get a Canon 28mm lens for the F1s, but which version is the best- the newer without the breechlock, or the older- and is the newer one still compatible with the metering?

Cheers,

Mick

I've got an original F-1, purchased new about 30 years ago. [the real original F-1, not the F-1(n). F-1(n) was 'new', before the F-1n which was the 2nd 'new'. :) ]
I've also got a full 150-page F-1 System book titled "Canon F-1: An Introduction to the Canon F-1". According to the last page, it is "correct up to the 10th of September, 1972", and covers the F1, Booster-T, Servo-EE, Motor Drive Unit, Film Chamber 250, Motor Drive MF, Tandem Control Unit, High Speed Motor Drive Camera, Electronic Remote Control System, The CAT System, Close-Up Photography, Photomicrography, and the FD lenses that existed then. (These are marketing/user info, not internal/repair info.) If I can answer anything for anyone, speak up!

Anyone have a USA source for the PX-1 (?) battery replacement for the Flash Adapter L. From the inside of the battery compartment, it was an 'H-P 1.3V mercury battery'. I assume it would have to be a zinc-air unless the voltage is not that critical. (I'm not using a CAT system flash, so all I really need is the power to drive the lamp for the viewfinder meter.) If true, could I use any 1.5 volt battery that fits the compartment (0.625-inch long, 0.615-inch diam).

Couple weeks ago I finially got a Winder F for the F-1 off of ebay. Although its a bit slow at a max of 2 frames per second, its made using the my old F-1n a whole new experience .Its far lighter than MF drive! We went on a photo safari in Garden of The Gods , Colorado this past weekend and the F-1n and Winder F combo easily fit in my assessory belt mounted Lowepro AW Topload Zoom along with my favorite Canon FD glass: 7.5mm 5.6 , 20mm 2.8 and 24mm 2.8 SSC. I am very glad I finially got this drive before they've all gone extinct.

Hello. I am a novice in the field of photography. Entering this study with a Canon F-1 original seems to have been a mistake. I own two and I am having the same problems with both,so it's not hard to figure where the fault lies. Clearly I need help. Example, Can someone explain to Me how F-stops relate to each other. Also, is a Canon 199a flash compatible with the F-1? I am looking for someone with the time and expertise to get Me started. Regards, Joe.

I have an old Canon F1, serial number 172579. How old is this, and can I use FD lenses with this?

Hello Art,
The simplest way might be to find a friendly Canon repair shop and ask nicely whether they have a scrap bin. Most repairers have boxes full of old camera bodies and lenses.
The FTb is certainly a nice camera. I also own one which I bought new in 1976 and it has given sterling service and some wonderful pictures over the years. It' not essential to have an F1 to take good photos!

Regards
Mike

I have a Canon FTb that I purchased new sometime around 1974. I've had it re-worked twice and is still in excellent condition. I have one problem though and that is I have lost the shutter speed dial indicator, it came unglued sometime back and was misplaced. This is the only thing "wrong" with my camera other than the case is quite worn (2nd case). I would like to find a replacement for the dial indicator if anyone can guide me somehow as to where I can acquire one. Thanks for any assistance.
