have a F3, have a chance to pick up a SB-21B understand that nikon suggests using a SB-21A for macro work. My question is it possible to covert the 21B - to 21A??? what is needed??? TTL?

To Willie: It seems that it depends on the date of production whether a F3/F3HP can be run with Lithium batteries or not. I have purchased my F3HP four years ago (new), and I have no problems at all with Lithium batteries.

Dear SAM, I have found this in this GREAT Malaysian web site: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/htmls/batteries.htm I don't recommend any lithium cells in a F3 at all. Anyway, I used to own a Nikon F, trust me, Nikon F3 is so much fun to play around with without losing your soul in the electronic and it is, perhaps even more reliable as well !

To TonyK: In the F3 display, "-8-" normally appears when the exposure time is longer than 8 seconds or out of range (in automatic mode). So therefore, something must be wrong, because it disappears when you stop down. Regards Hermann Graf

What batteries are preferred in my F3HP, 2 of the silver SR44's or 1 CR1/3N? I seem to remember reading that Nikon published a warning about lithium battery use in certain older cameras. I realize the question is rather elementary but I recently purchased this camera to retire my F "apollo" and am still adjusting to it.

Greetings. I have a question about the F3. I recently took one apart for a friend to re-install the exposure lock button. I actually didn't realize how much trouble it is until I started doing it. I had to take the camera completely apart to put that "C" clip on that button from the inside. Anyway, after re-assembly, everything works, except the LCD displays "- 8 -" when in Aperture Priority mode. The speeds seems to be correct (fast for light and slow shutter speeds when dark). I read somewhere that "- 8 -" means there is not enough light for a picture? In the Manual?

Anyways, my question is what is "- 8 -" and under what circumstances is this displayed? Any help is appreciated as I am not too thrilled at the prospect of opening up the camera again. Thanks in advance.

tk

To Dick: Recently, Nikon introduced the AS-17 adapter for the F3 which converts full capabilities (including TTL) from the F3 hotshoe to an ISO hotshoe (limit: only films up to 400 ISO).

Great site. I stumbled over it by searching for information on Oxberry. You mention the Oxberry Pro 5 as a variant of the F3. In fact, Oxberry made quite a few different cameras based on the F3. They all have the Pin-registration feature, which ensures the picture is at exactly the same place in relation to the sprocket holes of the film with every frame. Personally I still have an Oxberry Pro 1, which is the manual version (no transportation by motors like in the Pro 3 an Pro 5).
Pin registration has been an important factor for people doing slide animations in multi-image shows (meaning slide-dissolve shows). This was a heavily used art form for large format projections prior to video. It was used on trade shows and large companies had a presentation room where they showed their customers a multi-image show about themself.
Although not dead Multi-Image is seldom used any more, because video is easier and cheaper to produce and can rival multi-image shows in terms of brightness and sharpness when projected onto large screens. The Oxberry cameras based on the F3 where low-priced compared to a full-blown animation camera like a Forox, Mitchel or the "real" Oxberry called the "master"-series. I also have such a camera, wich was built to make pictures off of a digital film-recorder. Imagine: The Master-Series cameras has been around since more maybe 20-30 years and my camera has the serial-number somewhere in the 300´s!. Oxberry´s Nikon-based cameras where probably the most popular of these kind, but there where other companies also, that also equiped the F3 with some kind of pin-registration. I think it was Double-M, but I´m not shure. If you like, I could mail a few pictures of our Pro 1. btw: Oxberry is still in business. They are at www.oxberry.com.
