There is a web page at http://www.nikonlinks.com/~nicke/photo/misc/f3date.html which gives F3 serial numbers by approximate date of first sale. It appears that yours was made in 1991-2. I have just bought an F3HP with a serial number 1981xxx and was quite surprised to learn that it was made as recently as 1998.

I just purchased a used Nikon F3 HP Camera Body with the serial number 1908720. Can anyone tell me the year it was made? Also, does anyone know what serial number the last F3 HP off of the production line sported? I have exhausted my search online and Nikon claims not to be able to tell when it was made. Thanks, Mark

you might get one at Henry's shop on e-bay [I got a motor drive cap off him].

Does anyone know where to get caps to cover the motordrive hole on the bottom of the F3? Also a cap to cover the flash sync socket, and the little screw caps to cover the sockets on the front of the MD4 body! Many thanks.

Hi once again, Well I found a cap for the Motor-drive hole on my F3HP [thank you]. The 8-1 sec. shutter speeds seem about 60/125th. of a sec. [in fact all shutter speeds seem about that speed]. I sent it of to a Nikon service center and I have been told the CPU needs replacing....er...$800 [Australian $ or about US$580] !!! No thank you at that price. To think I sold my F2 to buy this camera [the F3 looks 9/10 and everything else beside shutter works fine]. No, in fact I don't wont to think about it ...

I was wondering if it is worth sourcing a CPU myself [?] ...or sell the HP viewfinder as a good one and then sell the body for parts {?]. Not sure what to do with this 'great'[?] F3. Any views or similar experiences would be good to hear about. Cheers.

Lawrence, Nikon did not keep a cross-reference of manufacture dates versus serial numbers. I have a partial list of serial numbers versus dates of sale, but I can't recall where I originally got it. If you'll respond with the serial number, I'll give you the approximate age. Walt

One question - is there a way to work out how old your camera is from the issue number? Can this be done online?

Just to say hello and to heap yet more well-deserved adoring adulation onto the F3! Mine has been to four continents so far and has just returned from Peru where my guide dropped it down a path that was so steep it was almost a cliff. However, mother earth presumably suffered more than the camera did as it bounced cheerfully down and worked perfectly fine afterwards! So thanks again to Nikon - I don't think that many cameras have inspired such devotion...can you imagine a site where people earnestly discuss the character of a d-i-g-i-t-a-l camera?!

Dear Lee, It seems something is bothering you with the shutter speeds on the low range on your camera. I got a Nikon FG with the same problem. I sent it first hand to an authorized Nikon service center in Mexico City and after the regular maintenance and changing of the gaskets and foams, lubrication, adjustment, cleaning and testing it appears now to be working fine. I really did not mentioned the problem to the technicians. I like to service whatever camera I buy without knowing their service schedules. If you want me to contact my service center and ask them for advice I could do so without any comprimise if they do want to keep their service secrets. ;-) I payed around $105USD for the complete service, the camera came brand new... Regards, Edgardo Molina

Thanks Ed. Bought the coupling cap from e-bay. The shutter speeds from 1-8 sec. on my F3 all seemed to fire at about 1/125 [?] when I got this camera [just bought in on e-bay]. Looks great but for the shutter speeds. 1/2 to 1/60 all seemed slow to. Is the electronic shutter on the F3 a problem area ? I've sent it of for repair/service.
