Andrew,

It is most likely a decision related to economy of scale and technical aspects, and sometimes market response. Lenses come and go and are often superseded by technically more refined models, albeit usually more expensive. Excellent examples of the 35-135mm can often be found in pro-dealer stock.

I have a questions instead of comments. Why is the 35-135mm lens discontinued? And where can I find one for sale?

Barbara,

The Rebel comes in several configurations; your post does not say which one of the models i.e. EOS 1000/Rebel, EOS 1000N/Rebel I, EOS 100FN/Rebel SII, EOS 500/Rebel XS you are using your 550EX on.

A number of advanced features are not useable with the Rebel i.e. E-TTL flash metering (which this flash excels in ), FP sync, FE lock and flash exposure bracketing.

The Rebel series cameras have become quite rare over the last decade so there may be other readers of the forum who have experience that can assist you further.

Michael,

Canon manufactures 2 EXTENDERS (a.k.a. converters): aan EF 1.4x II and an EF 2x II. There are some restrictions on lenses that can be used with these extenders. Also, because they are made to the 'L' series lens standard, optical performance is not sacrificed when used prudently with L-series (or some standard EF) lenses.

I have the Canon 550EX flash that I use on my Canon Rebel. I find it very inconsistent with exposure. Does anyone else have that problem? I use the program setting so I don't have to use manual. I have also tried aperture and shutter priority and still have the same results. thanks.

I have a Canon EOS 1000f and I would like to know what sort of tele-convertor I can use on it.
I need a specific description so that I can search for it online.
Thank you.

James,
The Canon 540EZ flash does not have a dedicated slave function. It is more commonly used as the master flash in small area, multi-flash set ups with additional slave-enabled flash units. The Canon off-camera shoe adaptor and Canon connecting cord (60cm and 3 metre options) are a more useful (in terms of central control from the camera) and less complicated wired multiflash set up with (useful with any EZ-series); the camera handles the total multi-flash set up using TTL.

Really stupid question but I have a Canon EOS 5000 which I haven't used in years and I can't figure out how to turn it on. Any ideas?

Anthony,

Let me start by stating that the most efficient way of cleaning the EOS 1N focusing screen is by removing it with the dedicated tool provided by Canon with all focusing screens. It is unwise to attempt cleaning the focusing screen in situ for the very reason you've written.

It is very unlikely that accidentally touching the mirror would cause the BC error condition; it sounds very coincidental. True, the mirror is a fairly sensitive piece of engineering not endeared to being touched, lifted, pressed or rubbed, any one of these likely to affect accuracy.

The BC condition has been proven very cryptic down through the years. Some owners have overcome the error by using the All Clear button inside the palm door, examining the contacts in the lens mount flange for damage, dirt etc.

Using a matchstick or toothpick (avoids damage to metal and mirror surface) you could try by gently levering the mirror up just a very small amount, then allowing it to instantly snap down into its normal position. The theory is that this (admittedly risky action) may reset the control pawl. DO NOT PERSISTENTLY ANTAGONISE THE MIRROR LIKE THIS.

Unfortunately, I cannot give any more specific information about the fault other than to a) use the Clear All function inside the palm door, and b) lI do recommend you proceed with a preliminary inspection to eliminate the possibility of more serious, undiscovered faults that may be a direct link to the BC error. This second recommendation is very relevant given the age of all EOS 1-series cameras that have no doubt seen heavy professional use with little regard to service and inspection.
