Q from JimWhere can I find a replacement AF switch for an 80-200mm 2.8 L lens black. Thanks Jim - JAMES CAROUSELSTUDIOJF@AOL.COM

This is not a do-it-yourself job. Take the lens to a Canon service centre for replacement of this small AF-MF switch on any 'L' series lens; replacement is not as easy as it looks and entails disassembly of the lens barrel and reassembly in a dust-free environment.

Hello! I would appreciate anyone's help with my Canon EOS Rebel X S, it worked like a charm for nearly 10 years and provided us with the most beautiful photos until last summer. It would only show "bc" in the message window and the film would wind and rewind constantly when it was out of the locked position. Rather than pay the high repair fee we opted to buy a new Rebel T2 and have been mostly disappointed with it's picture quality. I have changed the batteries in the Rebel X S, and just today I switched lenses between the two cameras hoping for picture quality improvement with the new camera. Thanks for any suggestions/ideas that may come my way.

Rebecca,:-A camera in use for say 10 years could quite possibly develop a fault. The "bc" on the display is a battery check advisory/warning, so the first thing to investigate is the battery. As you have done this and the behaviour does not change, then it is prudent to have the camera looked at by service personnel.

Q From Jimmy:- I have a Canon EOS 750 and I can't get the film to wind when I close the back. What can I do and what steps can I take to get it to wind the film? Thanks for any advice!!!!
***
A Jimmy, First, ensure the tip of the film is not extending beyond any warning mark printed in the film chamber. If the film leader is not aligned correctly in many EOS cameras it will simply not wind when the camera back is closed. Check also that batteries are serviceable. —garyh

Andy, I am very, very surprised there is a problem with a brand new EOS 1V. Built like a Humvee, this behemoth is not a camera with any sort of reputation for faults straight out of the box (assuming you've just bought it new?). If on the other hand you bought the camera second hand, I would begin to have fears that perhaps its history is something that needs to be looked into ... however, that might unfortunately too bit late now.

Without actually examining the camera personally, I can only make general suggestions, and even these may not turn up the problem. Check that the mirror lock-up function is not engaged with or without self-timer; battery(ies) fresh (this is often the single biggest cause of operational faults)? Is there anything in the mirror box obstructing the free movement of the main and secondary mirror e.g. an anti-shock clasp to prevent damage during transport ex-factory? Also, use the "all clear" function to clear the camera of any settings that may have been engaged. Examine the camera very, very carefully, especially anywhere near the mirrorbox. If you cannot eliminate the problem and the camera persists with faulty operation, yes, your best action is taking it to Canon (ie. the dealer direct, assuming the unit is under new warranty). If it is a second hand unit, contact the owner and determine if he/she is aware of the problem during their period of ownership (you'd then have grounds there for asking for a refund).

The film-based professional level EOS1 V replaced the EOS 1N and fault reports are extremely rare. Of course, a unit that has been tampered with, or dropped, even when packed as new, could possibly develop a fault where moving parts are concerned, but having seen many big cameras dropped hard and continue working (lenses are more easily damaged than the cameras!), I have doubts about that really. —garyh.

Just bought a EOS-1V and I think there maybe a problem with it. I am not getting any image through the viewfinder with lens attached. There is light coming through but nothing to focus on. I looked at the mirror and it does not appear to be returning to it stops and thus therefore does not appear tp be at the correct angle to reflect light to the focussing screen. The mirror in my old Canon T90 sit at approx 45 Degrees. This seems to be half that. Is this the cause of my problems. Is there a fix or does it need a trip back to the Service Centre. Regards Andy

Thanos, considering the popularity of digital cameras, selling an EOS 1N quickly for want of cash can be difficult. An EOS 1N with power drive booster E1 in mint condition will command a fairly good price nowadays, for example, if the camera is little used (very rare), no marks, body with PDBE1, it could be sold for USD$1,400 (euro 1,093); without the PDBE1, I'd estimate the cost at USD$750 or so (585 euro).

The tricky part in selling the EOS 1N is to make the camera appealing against a clutch of more affordable digital cameras, so you're really looking at selling it to professionals / fine arts photographers and the like who are dedicated to film-based photography. Film isn't dead, nor is it likely to be for years yet, so don't despair at the thought of competition from digital. You could try listing the camera on eBay with (and this is important) a number of detailed photographs of the camera showing its condition e.g. lens mount, mirror box and any obvious defects, and reduce the asking price considerably if there are many defects / lot of damage). The 28-105mm lens is very pedestrian (ordinary) and maybe should be sold off independently of the camera. The only other means to offload the camera is through a retail outlet somewhere, either in Greece or elsewhere in Europe, necessitating travel. I still think that eBay would be a good place to start as listing is free (you will pay a fee as a small percentage of the total sale price if the goods are sold) but be prepared to put in the work to show off the camera to the world and organise postage and insurance for it. --garyh
