James,
The battery magazine integral to the Power Drive Booster E1 for the Canon EOS 1, 1N and and 1N RS is interchangeable with NiCad Pack E1. As all EOS 1-series cameras have been long discontinued (post-2000), coming across a battery magazine, either for 8x AA batteries or the NiCad pack, could be quite a challenge.
It may be possible to exchange the battery magazine from Canon's newer Power Drive Booster E2 (for the EOS 1V) for the PDBE1 although I have not tried it.
Sources for battery magazines can include private EOS system collectors, professional camera dealers (this means world-wide) or eBay.

Chew and Philip,
Canon's 430EX flashgun is compatible with Canon's digital SLRs. What you are describing sounds like a pre-flash (for metering purposes) followed by the main flash. In some other models, a near-IR pre-flash is emitted, while other flashes may fire twice. The fact that the flash behaves as you would expect on your film-based cameras suggests that the digital camera may be instructing the flash to fire twice either for metering (as described above) or because of a custom function combination. I suggest switching second curtain sync off and running tests to maximum sync speed.
The matter of firmware and upgrades for your digital camera is beyond the scope of this forum which deals predominantly with film-based EOS models.
EZ-series flash units were designed for the EOS film-based cameras (1, 1N, 5, 1V), chiefly those models with the 5 AF points across the viewfinder which correspond to the layout of the AF-assist light on the EZ-series flash. Using an EZ-series flash with Canon digital cameras is theoretically possible but as AF points do not match and camera electronics (metering patterns and algorithms) are obviously different, it is probably better to invest in a more up to date series flash specifically for digital cameras.

Hi Gary,
I recently purchased a new Canon EOS350D. I tried most settings and custom functions just to find out how the camera works. Until one point when I match my Speedlite 430EX from my film cameras, I realized there is an error on the EOS350D, perhaps.
When I set the custom function #9 to "2nd curtain-synch", the camera triggers the hotshoe mounted Speedlite 430EX to fire twice within the exposure. Example when I set the shutter speed to 1 full second exposure, the flash fired at the point when the shutter opens, then fired again at the point when it closes. It suppose to fire at the end of the exposure only.
To reconfirm about the compatibility of the flash with the camera, I purposely detached the 430EX from the hotshoe and test with the pop-up built-in flash. The result is the same, the built-in flash pops twice also.
To satisfy my doubt about the Speedlite 430EX, I tested it with my EOS-630, EOS-10s and EOS-1V. All the three cameras triggered the flash to fire at the end of every exposures.
Can you tell me what is the problem? I noticed the Firmware version 1.0.3 is in my camera. Should I need to get it updated?8. From : Philip Wood (woodsdairy@tiscali.co.uk)

Tilly,
Some general information on this camera can be found here. This 'walkthrough' refers to the Rebel XS model; the Rebel X is a variant but without the built-in flash. All other features remain the same.
