Hi!

I am aware that the ML-3 is TTL and the EOS Rebel is ETTL but is there any
way in the world i can force my 300D to fire the flash so i can program
the exposure myself?

This is really beginning to depress me!

Thanks,

P. Kabakchiev

Replicated post from the lenses Message board at:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/lenses/index.php

I'm not fortunate enough to have an EOS1 to try out, but I have tried to mount my EF-S 18-55 lens on my daughter's film Rebel: The lens will not mount to the camera. The film camera has a shallow ledge above the focusing screen with which the -S lens interferes so it can't reach the bayonet. I can't say if other film EOS cameras are the same, but I suspect that this was done on purpose to prevent cross-mounting. The -S lens, of course, would not cover the 35mm frame in any case if it could mount, so it would not be very satisfactory (but I was curious to see just what it would do). I don't know if there would be a mirror clearance problem with the lenses, but it's a moot point if the bayonet won't accept them.

James, If you are new to Canon, 'coming to grips' with the EOS 1N will definitely be a priority, along with a lens, of course. The flagship SLR of the EOS range from 1994 to 2001, the EOS 1N can be matched with any of around 60 Canon EF ultrasonic lenses, varying in type from prime to excellent zooms.

Canon's standard EF ultrasonic lenses have a gold USM marking on the focusing ring. The L-series lenses, which represent the pinnacle of Canon's optical engineering, have a sold red ring on the lens. The price difference is often quite substantial, but then so too is the unquestionable jump in imaging quality—when used competently.

Canon's L-series zoom, 17-40mm f4L, is optimised for digital cameras but also works without conflict with film-based cameras (I use it on my EOS 1N). There are others e.g the 24-105 L-series USM IS zoom. Canon's EF-S series lenses for digital cameras are likely to conflict with the lens mount and mirror box of film-based EOS cameras and cannot be confidently recommended for that specific use.

Hi I am new to Canon, and have just bought a used Eos 1n body. Can somebody please tell me about lens compatability - should I buy a EF lens only, or will the camera take a lens made for digital cameras. What do I specifically look for? What is EF-S etc? Please advise so I can buy a lens and get to grips with this beauty! Thanks JD

azhar:- The EOS 30 and 33 is designed specifically for Canon's EF-series AF lenses, of which there are something like 60 available. The old A1-series lenses have a different mount and I think, protruding pins where they once engaged the mechanics inside the mirror box on the older Canon cameras. Consequently, using these older lenses on EOS bodies means you run the risk of damaging the mirror and/or the signal pins. Some years ago I saw an adaptor that allowed the use of non-EF series lenses on EOS bodies, which looked rudimentary and experimental. I have no professional experience or feedback on the use of such an adaptor, nor have I seen any in the many professional dealers of which I am associated. I would recommend you upgrade to any of the EF-series Canon lenses as the quality (particularly the venerated L-series lenses) are very much improved over the optical quality of 16 or so years past. garyh

Odezi, I certainly hope you have not attempted to charge lithium batteries! If fresh batteries are inserted and the shutter refuses to fire, it is most likely a fault within the camera that requires professional attention, and this recommendation, along with my earlier reply, still holds. garyh

Sir,this is my latest experience in my canon eos 5000, all the new lithum batteries I fixed on it have failed to work, it shows that is not fully charged, all functions in the camera are okay, but the shutter button refused to fire.
What solution can you give me.
Thanks
Odezi

Odezi:- The presence of "thick black line shadows" would sound like a problem with the shutter during the actual exposure. It is not clear if you are using a flash. Considering the age of the camera (first released in 1995), it would be best to have the camera examined at a service centre rather than speculate on the cause of the problem, but a shutter fault is indicated. Passport photographs have specific requirements in terms of lighting, composition and clarity and many home users come to grief when their photograph is presented for processing. Having said that, using the camera on Auto, with diffused flash (flash used with people wearing glasses can result in 'hot spots' that obscure eye colour) should give you an acceptable image but it must still conform to official guidelines for passport photographs. garyh

Good morning sir, My Camera is Canon Eos 5000 This is my case, whenever i snap indoor pictures it comes with very thick black line shadows and the background is usually dark especially if it's a group photograph allowing only those on the front line to be seen clearly. I know something is wrong becos even if the room is well lighted it is still the same. Please tell me what is needed to be done to correct thick line shadows and be able to snap and see a full range of persons clearly in indoor pics . Also what is the best speed in snapping passports ? Thanks . Odezi, Nigeria
