Hi .. great forum. I have a question too-I am still using my Canon T90. I wish to ask if the the TS-E lenses (EF version) can autofocus ? or just when it tilts or shifts only disengages from autofocus? I have a FD TS-E older one.
***
All current Canon TS-E lenses are manual focus with AF confirmation, that is, the AF confirmation light in the viewfinder will be activated when correct (but often not critical) focus has been achieved. The AF confirmation light is best not relied on when any TS-E lenses are used in Tilt as the focus plane has shifted. The moment tilt (or tow) has been applied you must rely on the matte screen for critical focus; there can be no rush about this so do take your time. The Canon Right Angle Finder C offering a magnified view of the central portion of the viewfinder is useful for this. When Shift has been applied AF focus confirmation will respond, but depending on the amount of shift, it may 'stutter' (the light will flicker erratically or not at all) as the light beam hitting the sensor has been 'skewed'. Applying tilt and shift concurrently takes you into specialist territory where critical focus takes time and patience. —grh

A stupid Question for EOS gurus here: Is the newer image stabiliser (IS)EF lenses work on older EOS-1 or the newer EOS-1N ? Does it requires any setting on the cmaera to use them ? I am worried because the EX flash E-TTL is not working with these older Canon and are the lenses also have some restrictions just as the flash (E & A-TTL) ? I got an offer for the EOS-1N but the seller cannot answer me...

I agree. This is a great site. But I also think it is a little too late. If this site has gone live 10 years back - this could probably be the reference site for all EOS lovers. Nevermind - it is still an immesenly helpful reference source. I like the beginnng of the works on the EF lenses. Thanks for sharing.

I am not sure if this site is useful anymore - as everyone has turned digital ? May be it can serve as an archive for a once great SLR from Canon...

Well, I don't really think *everybody* has turned digital; it is, after all, an alternative, not a panacea. Digital still has some shortcomings to overcome (v.i.z., holding detail in highlights and not blocking shadow, more variable ISO, better control of noise a greater reliability, among others). Fine art photographers, whether they are using 35mm, 6x4, 6x6 et al will be using film well into the future; these folk have many years of varied experience to call on rather than hand over complete control of a photograph to a camera and computer. Many professionals are of the view that people should definitely learn photography on film ("kneading it like bread to shape it just right for every scene") before moving on to digital. People are spending a proverbial king's ransom on digital cameras yet they are too often producing very ordinary, very pedestrian images (the result of giving too much control to the camera with too little knowledge of the photographer). Digital photography has quite well stamped its forté in the media as that application's single biggest revolution and fits the task nicely. For the consumer, the problem is the industry hype and hack, to "buy! buy! buy!" without fully thinking current and future uses through.

Though discontinued, the classic, epoch-making EOS 1N will be around for quite a while yet as a sought-after robust working tool (as mine is, used in parallel to an even older EOS 5!) and collector's item, in the shadow of its bigger brethren -- the EOS 1V (film) and the EOS 5D (digital). Lastly, the Canon EOS series website is a one-stop "shop" for people wanting to get "under the skin" of the 1N and get to know it better (it was once the famed doyen of all media photographers, outpacing Nikons) and evidently a lot of viewers are finding it provides valuable insight and information that was hard to come by or not known about at all. --grh

I must comment that this is a very good and incredibly useful site ! In fact, your site has made me more determined to get one of these. Is there a way to verify the year of production or batches of the EOS1N ? I saw some bargain prices and undeciding which to buy (the four units have different serial numbers). Or is there a site that lists such kind of information? Canon replied to me that the information I asked is "classified".

I'm not sure why Canon would say such information is "classified". Personally, I think it is fairly unimportant that the four units you are looking at have different serial numbers. I would be focused on the condition of any of the EOS1Ns being looked at, particularly if they have been in professional use constantly. Outside display, operation of main dial, quick control dial (on back cover), operation of shutter and any damage to the lens mount and mirror box are things to watch out for. Canon has the means to plug an EOS1N into a computer (via hot shoe) and find out how many exposures the camera has made in total (among other things). Rest assured all EOS1N cameras were made identical and millions were made worldwide. So long as there is no obvious and quite extensive damage that could adversely impact upon your use of the camera now or in the future, then the camera should be fine. Examine all of them. When you've decided, have the one you want fully tested. I'd take it to Canon but realistically you will be restricted to the facilities in the shop. Just make sure you get a detailed report of the test. —grh.
