HELP!!! We got ahold of this Canon EOS Rebel XS/G at a garage sale for our 13 y/o son who's become more serious about his photography hobby. He's in 4-H, but there's no official teacher and we have no idea what in the world we have here in our hands!! This unit has obviously been very well taken care of. The previous owner has all the paperwork to it, except the OWNER'S MANUAL, of all things. If we could just read about this lovely unit, we could begin to learn more. Does anyone know where to obtain the manual for this? Among the paperwork was a pamphlet-looking thing that looked more like it was really for the Rebel G model(s). This couldn't be the owner's manual, could it? We're sooooo lost. Help us, please! Feel free to email me privately, as I'm not even sure how/where I got onto this site/forum.
Mystified,

Jim,
Both the Elan and 620 EOS bodies employ a 2CR5 battery. Please be aware that 2CR5 lithium batteries are *NOT* rechargeable (as the Sanyo battery correctly states). I think you would be better served buying batteries from a camera dealer where you can see what you are getting. Insofar as eBay is concerned, it is wise to regard descriptions of "rechargeable" batteries — especially 2CR5 types — with a healthy dose of scepticism, particularly any "doctored" aftermarket batteries coming from Hong Kong and China.
Lastly, if you should recharge a "rechargeble" lithium battery and it explodes or catches fire and in turn damages your house or fittings, your household insurance is unlikely to cover the loss if the cause of damage is traced to a battery that had been modified in such a way as to be 'rechargeable'.

I own both Canon 620 and Canon Elan camera bodies. Are these cameras both compatible with 2CR5 lithium photo batteries (as sold on eBay). Some of the battery ads say "rechargeable 2CR5 lithium photo battery". My Sanyo batteries distinctly say "non-rechargeable". What is correct or are both battery types usable in the above two cameras?
Thank you for any information you might provide.

Mikec,
Any substance on the frail shutter curtains is best left to service professionals. It is very easy to damage the curtains with even the lightest of pressure, and any such damage will then exacerbate things. It is of course possible to make an attempt to clean the shutter curtains yourself but the liquid may be behind or above/below the visible curtains. This theory is strengthened by you remark that your last roll of film was only half exposed, so a thorough in/out investigation is desirable.
I am rather troubled by the reported liquid nature of the substance on the shutter curtains. I am thinking perhaps a small insect has entered through the lens mount, made home behind the mirror and perhaps even died there. With the lens removed, place the camera in BULB mode and fire the shutter while looking into the mirror box; if the shutter curtains do not fully open or close, an obstruction is indicated. This is the only test I recommend.
Because of uncertainty and the wish to avoid encouraging anybody to examine the shutter curtains, my best advice is for you to have the camera professionally examined; that way, you can more likely look forward to a few more years of reliable use.

I own an early 1990 model Canon 10S. It has some sort of liquid substance on the surface of the shutter curtain closest to the film plane. My last roll of film's exposures were only half exposed! Can this substance be cleaned from the shutter curtain using denatured alcohol? Any advice is greatfully appreciated. I would like to clean it myself, if possible. What do you suggest? Thank you in advance.7. From : Moderator Gary Rowan Higgins (Australia) (nomail@encable.net.au)

David,
In PIC and full-auto shooting modes, the flash of the EOS 500 pops up to provide illumination as required. If you do not wish for the flash to activate, switch the camera to Av (aperture priority), Tv (shutter priorit), P (Program) or M (manual), or attach one of the suitable Canon Speedlights (380EX, 220EX, 300EZ or 200E) so that you have control of when and where flash illumination should be used.
