Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. First off this is the best site out there. Second if my question has already been covered, I'm sorry, just send me to the right forum. I got a used early F4s which I love. The switch in the battery compartment has KR-AA and LR6 for settings. I've been using energizer 2500mAh AA's (NiMH) without any problems that I know of but was wondering what setting would be most appropriate for them or if I should be using them at all. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Richard: The only way you are going to avoid the situations you describe is to buy your camera from a reputable used-equipment dealer. You might get lucky on E-bay, but you are just a likely to get the opposite. Try KEH Camera Brokers at www.KEH.com. I have been a customer of theirs for quite a few years and have always been pleased with their merchandise and their grading system is very conservative. They also guarantee their equipment. They also have a 14-day no-questions-asked return period.

Since Nikon does not publish a serial-number vs date-of manufacture list, it's hard to know when updates are incorporated by looking at the serial number. Your information is probably as good as any I could give you.

The F4 series was in production past 2000-2001, and I'm not sure exactly when the last ones were made. In any case, they are all most likely out of the factory warranty now, so buying US model cameras is no advantage. The F series Nikon cameras didn't have differences between the US models and the non-US ones. The one exception was the F4s, which was built for the US market. It is really only a standard F4 with the MB-21 battery pack/grip. The gray-market cameras were called that because they were imported to the US through dealers that weren't Nikon-authorized. NikonUSA authorized repair centers would not repair them under warranty. Since as I said above, most F4 series cameras on the market now are out of warranty, the gray-market vs US model distinction has disappeared. Good luck with your purchase. I know you'll enjoy using the F4. I certainly have. Walt

HELLO. I AM IN THE MARKET TO PURCHASS A NIKON F4 SLR CAMERA BODY. I NEED A BRIEF EDUCATION AS TO WHAT LOOK FOR AND BEWARE OF SO AS NOT TO BUY SOMEONE ELSES PROBLEM, ONE THAT HAS NOT HAD EXTENSIVE USE AND ONE THAT IS NOT GOING TO NEED REPAIR OR ADJUSTMENTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I HAVE READ THAT ONE SHOULD STAY ABOVE SERIAL NUMBER 245XXX OR SO AS ALL UPDATES HAVE BEEN MADE. IS THIS CORRECT FOR THAT SERIAL NUMBER RANGE?

SHOULD ONE PURCHASS A UNIT WITH THE US SERIAL NUMBER PREFIX AND WHY? IVE SEEN F4'S ON EBAY THAT THE SELLER STATES IS A US MODEL WITHOUT THE US PREFIX. DID ALL UNITS SHIPPED TO THE UNITED STATES HAVE THIS PREFIX? WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED IF A GRAY MARKET UNIT IS PURCHASSED AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER?

Hello all, I started with photography when I was 13 or so, somewhere in the beginning of the seventies. I owned a Nikkormat, several FM’s, an EM, a F2 Photomic and a couple of F-601’s. Since 1999 I’m working digitally and own a D100, a D70s who broke down a few weeks ago with a blocked curtain, a D1 and I’m going to buy in the near future a D200. Anyway I recently bought a Minolto 2820 dpi filmscanner some old negs and I must admit, I liked the results, more specific the enormous dynamic range one lacks with digital. So I bought a second hand F4 with battery pack, SB-22 flash and MF-23 data back. Waiting anxiously for the film being developed, it’s an experience I had forgotten. And the F4? It’s a great camera, made for my hands! I enjoy shooting with it, remembering the days when it came out and I couldn’t afford one! Great camera indeed. Hail Nikon! Stephan, Belgium

Steven, The CF-41 is designed to fit the F4 with the standard MB-20 battery pack. The F4 with the MB-21 is too tall, and will not fit properly. The correct case for the F4 with the MB-21, also known as the F4S, is the CF-43. Walt

Steven, The CF-41 case is designed to hold the F4 with the MB-20 battery pack, and a 35-50mm lens. The F4 with the MB-21, also known as the F4S, requires the CF-43 case. Walt
