Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. I have just bought an F4 and run through my first film. All came out well BUT putting a new film in I now notice:

1) The camera acts as if the film is still loaded and tries to take a single shot the first time the shutter button was depressed to load the film??? The top counter DID reset to just beyond zero and is now working it's way towards zero step by step... (i.e. in the right direction but the film was never 'officially' loaded. It worked FINE for my first film and incrememted about 3 times without firing the shutter as it should to give a '1' when I started.

2) The frame counter in the viewfinder is now reading about 40 shots and increasing.

I presume that the two are linked as the camera thinks it still has the original film in it!

How can I reset the counter in the viewfinder? I've tried taking out the batteries for a while but it stays the same.

Hi everybody. I'm new in the group. I bought a F4s few months ago: really great camera!
I'm deciding wheter buying or not a 300mm f/4.5 non AI tele.
I think it's a very old one since the body is silver coloured.
The two small "bat ears" are present without any hole.
I know the autofocus will not work, but I don't mind.
Some doubts reagrding the non-AI: this means that I should use the stop-down method for metering? is it so? Will the spot metering mode work well with the stop-down metering tecnique?
I'm a bit confused 'cause I read that the spot metering works only with lenses with an f-number > 2.
Could anyone explain me the matter ?

Thanks in advance, bye

Ric

I bought in 1992 a nikon F4s and a ton of accessories for my son college graduation. He left that summer and shot maybe 4 rolls. The camera was left in the original box until this month when I dcided to use it. Works great but I see some dust on the mirror. Any suggestion if could be cleaned and with what. Thanks.

Hi, just wondering if I can get any feedback on a problem with a recently bought f4s? I tried to submit a posting last night but I think I was mistaken for a spammer and rejected so this is just to see if I can get on.

By the way, the mentioned AF-D Micro is - as barief by the author (leoofoo?) is the best you can buy for a close up optic. I have just found his site at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/AFNikkor/af200mmicro/index.htm
Highly recommended fr your macro photo needs !

Nope. I have used mine (Micro Nikkor AF-D 200mm IF ED) with the F4 and no red alert is shown. So, that sound strange as per your description. Check the rear pin if it collides with any points with the lens mount.

I have an F4 and am having a problem with the red alert light. When I am using a 50mm 1.4D lens the alert lights comes on after each shot. If I replace that with a non-D AF lens or MF AIS lens the problem stops. Put the 50mm back on and the problem reoccurs, etc., etc. What could this problem be?
