Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. I got an answer from Nikon with respect to my F4 problem below. My shutter and flash shoe failed simultaneously. Nikon says the NiMH batteries could NOT have caused the problems. Guess I'm just unlucky. The camera, sent to Melville facility, works fine now.

i have downloaded the F4S/F4 Instruction Manual (EXTERNAL LINK) that was available through the nikon webpage... only problem is the clarity is absolutely POOR ! Is there anyone interested in selling me their copy? It seems that ONLY an original copy will suffice my need. Please email me at jacam57@ite.net should you be interested in selling your ORIGINAL F4 Instruction Manual joseph December 14, 2004

I must correct a statement below that I made. The F4 does NOT have trouble focusing in low light. It snaps to focus on an oak cabinet in a room with only a table lamp on. I recall reading when I bought it about focus problems, and I think it was horizontal lines that were a problem. It is rare that it won't focus, but has happened to me in S mode. If it won't focus, just focus on something nearby and recompose. The little rectangle must be on a focusable object, and it is black and very hard to see in low light, and THIS can cause a delay in low light focusing.

No word from Nikon yet whether NiMH's could have cause my shutter and flash failure. I've used them 2 years in the F4 and longer in the N90s and F100 without problems. Still using them after the repairs. This is a fantastic and fun camera to own and operate if you don't mind its physical size and weight. I recommend it. Look on ebay: less than $500 with little wear.

Greetings, Purchased an F4 about six months ago. Two issues have surfaced, and I'd like some feedback from users. 1.) meter coupling mechanism, (interface with lens aperture ring) is not moving as it should in order to index lens appropriately; and 2.) camera seems to be draining battery power even when in off position. I've tried both AA alkalines and NiCad batteries - no difference. Battery switch may have been left on in NiCad position by another user when camera was actually loaded with AA alkalines. Any insight much appreciated. Also, any highly recommended repair facilities - prefer east coast USA. Please cc me directly with any replies. Thanks again.

I got a MINT F4 on ebay 2 yrs ago. I love it and have used it relatively little (?100 rolls film and blank shots). Fired it up for vacation: 3 rolls blank. $262 for replace shutter and repair flash shoe that would not fire flash. Very disappointing for an F series Nikon. Noone handles one gentler than me. I used NiMH batteries without problems x 2yrs. Don't know if it related. I got it repaired and still love the massive solid camera. These are going for very good prices on ebay, less than $500. Focusing can have trouble in low light.

From the Nikon F4 onwards, all pro-level F-bodies has shutter counts of how many shots have been fired (provided Nikon service centre lets you know).

Unlike mechanical cameras, electronic cameras (restricted to pro-class bodies) seldom has problems (like it or not, they behave more reliable - minus the power segment and moisture penetration). So, all you have to check is actually the battery contacts and see if they show any signs of corrosion. The exterior metal pieces may also provide some clue if the camera has been ill-treated (soup in the rain or something else). The finder + the lens mount section see if it has been dropped (allignment) by removing finder/lense to see how smooth it goes. That's all, I guess.

I'm thinking of buying a secondhand F4 and would like some advice on what to check to see whether the camera is good or has been treated less than lovingly. Any advice appreciated. I would prefer you to send replies to my email account above (don't worry it's just a spam trap), but replying here is ok too. TIA, Paul

The new Nikon F6 has reverted back to the modular Nikon F4 design - that proves the F4 has its place in its earlier design. However, except the viewfinder area which strangely has omiited earlier single-Digit F design. Anyway, I like my Nikon F4 ! Viva Nikon !!!
