Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. "PC" sounds very lisleading where some new photographers may think it associates with the home PC that we are so accustommed to. Well, prior to popularity of direct mounting flash with camera via the hotshoe (accessory shoe) connection on top of the pentaprism, many older MF bodies often making use of the PC terminal to sync for flash photography (meaning flash burst will synchronise WITHIN the specific top shutter speed offers in a camera for flash to work in flash photography as during a flash exposure, the shutter curtain remains open during the exposure in order flash light can be evenly distribute across the entire picture frame, naturally, the slower the shutter speeds will have greater assurance that flash light can reach the destination film but it has a effect on the picture with varible shutter speed used (most called the double images as "ghost" images). On MOST MF Nikon bodies and a selective AF bodies, there is a sync terminal or Connector provided which can also be used to fire the flash through a connecting flash sync cord. The sync cord can be attached directly onto the camera's PC terminal by screwing a threded collar into the sync connector (PC-terminal). Nikon sync cord has better security as it can be locked in place securely and will not fall off easily or accidentally disconnected. The flash terminal on these Nikon bodies will also accept conventional flash sych cords but without a security threded connection. Some of the more powerful (& expensive) bracket mounted Nikon flash models (Nikon brand or third party labels) only can sync via connection to this port (with some later versions which can offer TTL flash with their respective dedicated TTL sync cord, most of these handle flash models usually also provide a secondary PC terminal connection for such purpose (off camera). Well, please note: flash photography with connection via PC terminal CANNOT perform TTL flash and, depending on each individual flash models, they usually only offers AUTO or MANUAL flash ONLY. Although sadly, it is not that common now to find a PC terminal on modern entry SLRs now, but this feature can be proved to be a life saver at times, as the PC terminal is a universal function and theoetically, you can make use of an old third party flash (or even other manufacturers' unit such as Canon or Minolta flash units that has a sync connection to fire the flash with your Nikon body. Lastly, those days, some photographers also making use of this feature as Slave Unit connection in a multiple flash setup operation. Am I too talking for too long and detail ??

Just curious. What does the "pc" stand for as in PC cord for a flash? Someone asked and I realized I didn't know what it means-I just know what it is. Thanks for the help

I have two F4S bodies and was wondering whether the new vibration reduction technology in the new lenses by nikon will work on them. VR does work on the F5. Does anybody know? Thanks

After struggling with the camera to get a swaying close-up flower snapped into focus ... I have finally got myself with a Nikon F4 ! Say whatever you like, because in terms of speed autofocusing, my room mate's N80 with the bloody slow 28-70mm Nikkor zoom does not necessary get in-focus faster than the F4 but I can find so much fun in the flexible, rugged Nikon F4 than a boxy plastic-cased N80. I have bought a new screen as well, along with an used, cheap waist level finder. I tend to be more productive with this camera, good investment, I think. I have to look around for an old cheap Nikkor 200mm micro lens later. Thanks for the greatness in this making of this superb website !

I have bought another Nikon F4. Probably, as the site has pointed out - the camera is a very logical investment for "old time" photographer like me - where I am still using so many of the MF Nikkors and yet still be able to enjoy modern metering system and autofocusing (just bought another AF capabled TC-16A - in fact, I have only an AF 75-300mm Nikkor zoom in my entire collection of Nikkor). By the way, it is a GREAT WEBSITE here for used photo gears, it it extremely additive to follow up with the enormous amount of high quality content - possibly the best you can find on the web today !!!!!

Similarly, I have been a Minolta user (XG-9, X-700) and I am turning autofocus. I didn't select the Maxxum but got myself with a Nikon F4 instead (much thanks to this fabulous website in influencing my decision). I have a question though, I read about the old Nikkor lenses with the camera, does it means I can also use cheaper manual focus Nikkor lenses with a AF converter (TC16A ??) to trun it into an autofocus lense ? Hard to believe but that is a wonderful idea. It says the lenses must be f/3.5 or above, I am not the kind to shoot action photography so, AF speed is not entirely my priority. But I have learnt many of the manual focus Nikkor are great optic which is basically the main reason for my shift from the Maxxum to the Nikon. Sorry for writing too long, but it is my first experience for the Nikon. Cheers !
