Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. This is a marvelous photographic website. I am happy to see a few of its wrong links being fixed and there are a couple of new uploads of HTML pages being added as well. Web site of such scale, details and quality is hard to come by, I would imagine the amount of time and effort in preparation of this website. The overall presentation of the classic SLR series section in this malaysian website is truly of world class standard and I have no doubt why ZEAL team and Google have rated it so highly. Thanks for the greatness ! Regards, I.H. from Brooklyn, NY.

Hello!!! I study photography at Fine Arts Academy in Gdańsk, Poland. I bought my F4s about two years ago. It inspires me every time I take it out of my bag!!! I use wonderfull old manual Nikkors (28mm, 50mm, 135mm) and SB-24 Nikon speedlight. The system works perfect in every possible conditions. In my opinion F4s has only one defect: ones you use it, every other SLR seems to be just a plastic toy.

I remember when I first saw a Nikon F4s camera in a display case at a photo shop. I couln't leave the store without at least picking it up. It just looked like it was made to last. At the time I was looking for a camera that would be reliable and sturdy, with traditional controls, and compatible with all those superior old manual focus lenses, as well as the more recent auto-focus ones. I picked it up and compared it's ergonomic design to the akward feeling of the F100's jutty body. The nobs were all where I wanted them, and there were no cheezy multiple function buttons that would leave me bewildered in a moment where time only allows you to rely on your instincts. I can only imagine my frustration in missing shots because of having a camera that was too technologically equipped. I looked the F4s over, and the second shutter release, the interchangable viewfinders/ focusing screens, the advance modes, the light meters, and much more made me fall in love with its features. When I got home that day I read all the literature I could find on the camera, until I decided it would be a waste of my time NOT to buy it. I got a used one in near mint condition for just over $700. That is less than half the cost of a new professional Nikon camera, and for a camera that I would be more likely to use at full potetnial. I havn't had any complaints as of today and don't forsee any in the future. I LOVE my F4s!!

I just bought a Nikon F4s in perfect condition. The dealler that sold me the camera included a free check out at Nikon Canada. They gave me a list of things that are shot. The aperature control modual isn't working properly and the lens mount bayonet on the camera was not working properly as well. The total cost to repair it is about $1200.00 Canadian. This camera has not been used much at all but couldn't focus and sync with the winder . Also I bought a 35-70 AF 2.8 lens and found out the lens was fogged up inside . ,Yes I willl keep it when it is fixed . The F4s is the best camera Nikon ever made in my opinion.,,,,,I am a Pro-photographer and not going digital yet as I still cannot compare pixels to film grain and prefer scanning from slide films . I would estimate that to match the quality of Kodachrome 25 or 64 to digital would need to have a CCD with about 60-70Megipixels in the 35mm format. I wanted to post this as to let others know that even Nikons best still can have problems just like the Porsche I once had. But,,,I wouldn't trade my F4s for any other cameras ever.,,,,,,,,,,Roy

Glad to have found another high quality website featuring the Nikon F4 (It is so much better than the Nikonian site but strangely Google didn't list this site yet). My favourite combination is the F4e (couples Nikon F4 with a Multi-Power High Speed Battery Pack MB-23). Yes, I do agreed the weight factor alone has made the F4 less appealing in certain ways as compared with other midrange AF Nikon bodies, however, but since I don't own any big long teles Nikkor and seldom shoot sports or wildlife pictures, that is fine with me. I own a mix of both MF and AF Nikkor lenses - other than the F801, it is one of the best AF Nikon bridging with old/new lense compatibility. Well, I agreed with the creator of this site, the current F100 does sound very tempting to me but I will not part my F4 even if I eventually acquire a new Nikon AF body such as the F100 (or D100), this camera has its own unique charactor and all these years, I have enjoyed very much using it ...by the way, this is a GREAT Nikkor resource site, bravo, bravo !

Ohhs .. sorry, the earlier link was the index page for the film back section. The said instruction manual is at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/filmbacks/MF24/index.htm
you can check through various section to see if it mentioned anything relating the display of aperture on the LCD woudl require use of a CPU-Nikkor.

I have checked this page for you: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/filmbacks/MF24/indexmf24map.htm it does mentioned aperture value will be shown. However, I think MF Nikkor may not be able to relay the value to the film back as even the viewfinder's aperture is via direct viewing method. So I would assume only CPU Nikkor (i.e. AF Nikkor lenses) will able be transmitting the aperture electronically to the film back. I would suggest you to read through the instruction manual of the MF-24 (skip the bulk film loading sections) as both the MF-23 and MF-24 are the same in their operation sequence. See: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/filmbacks/index1.htm
