Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. Just picked up an F4 last week. After shooting a roll and a half, the mirror is stuck in the up position, the LED is blinking and nothing else happens. I rewound the roll, loaded a new one, but when i depress ths shutter release, the motor makes a winding sound, but the film does not wind or advance and the mirror is still in the up position, I'm going to take it in tomorrow(they should make good on it, they had like five others)...Am I missing something? I tried moving the mirror lock button, with no luck.

Thanks,

Having just bought, via good old ebay, a much used Nikon F4s, could anyone give me a link to a list of serial numbers to establish just how old this war horse of mine is. Having only had it a few days, the honeymoon period is still with us and I'm in love with it. Not as nice as my F5, but with its two seperate AF and EE lock button, a feature I wish the F5 (and the D range) had. Brilliat piece of kit, I'd just like to know how old it is.
Thanks

first of all, my email is ragmund@yahoo.com

Please email me vs. having me run through 100's of these messages to find answers!!!

Just bought 2 used F4 bodies on ebay after 10 years of digital work, and after 20 years of film work. Long story... Lotsa lenses, lotsa digital experience, but a bit of yearning for the beautiful cameras I once used.

I also just bought an NPC polaroid back for this camera... Does anyone know the ins and outs of how to use this thing?

This forum is linear as can be... I'd rather you just email me if you know anything about it, especially what Polaroid films are still available for the NPC unit, and how to use this thing. Still haven't got it, it's in transit, but I expect it will be a big part of what I'm up to.

PS... I do studio and insect work.

Best,

Ray Swanson

Jim,

The F4 can use any Nikon autofocus lens (with some exceptions), or either the AI or AIS series manual focus lenses. The new VR lenses will work, but the F4 doesn't have the capability to use the VR feature. Also the "G" series lenses, without the aperture ring, will not work either. The "D" lenses will not be able to use the "D" eature on the F4. Of course the image from the lenses specifically designed for the digitals will not fill the 35mm frame.

The lens you have is a non-AI lens, and can only be used if it has been modified to AI specs. The lens can be modified by John White (www.aiconversions.com)at a cost of about $30. I have a 24mm f2.8 non-AI I'm about to send to John to modify.

My favorite lens to use with my F4 is the Nikkor 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 AF D. Although the F4 can't use the "D" feature, I find I really don't miss it. These lenses are plentiful on the used market. Try KEH Camera Brokers (www.KEH.com).

Walt

Hi, I just bought a used Nikon F4S on eBay and I was just wondering if I can use this lens with it: Nikkor-S Auto 1:1.4 f= 50mm (also from eBay). If it is not possible or compatible, what standard lens should you guys recommend? Thanks.

Thanks for the links.

I did however see the details of this 'pin' before posting, but could find no other information on what exactly it does. Is it the counter reset? I notice that mine doesn't stick out quite as far as the one at the other end near to the hinge - or is it not meant to? You can still push it in a bit and it comes out again.

If you think this is the problem and it is not coming out far enough, then how would one easily resolve it?

Try here and read the advice given: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/filmbacks/index.htm
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/filmbacks/backreleasepin.jpg
check the pin hidden had some problem and you should be able to fix it yourself.
