Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon F4 Series Professional SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

Nikon F4 - The first F-class professional camera model that offers autofocusing. It was regarded as one of the most versatile F-model of all time as virtually all Nikkor lenses that produced thus far be used EFFECTIVELY with the camera. It was also the first F-class SLR that virtually depends on electronic/barry power all its function. Despite its AF features were beginning to shown some sign of age when compared with many modern Nikon SAF models that kept surfacing; the Nikon F4 still remains a hot favorite among many working pro and serious amateurs. This section is aimed to supplement the content of the Nikon F4 site to address other issues not being addressed in the site and you may also make good use of it to share common knowledge & exchanging experience with the camera. Russel: There is a Nikon F5 that sells for MR2800-00 (cheap at USD736-00) The digital imaging is pushing prices down for film cameras. Good news for those who has not bought any yet but sad for those who owns some now. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/index.php3 (use keyword search) and you cna convert the currency here:

To Whom It May Concern: I am very fond of the F4. In the early 90s this was the benchmark for all 35mm SLR's. Today it can match the F5 and F6 in build quality, finder brightness and information. The F4's top speed is just about the fastest around, save for the D1H.

With it's great build and excellent finder, the F4 will never become obsolete. The AM-1300 in the F5/D1H is faster, but the AM-200 in the F4 is fine for 90% of my shooting needs. The MB-20 makes the F4 into a 43 oz. package, which is far smaller than the F5, while coming close to the new F5 in size and weight. On a final note, at $800-$1,000 the F4 is a bargin. You could buy two Nikon F4's, one Tokina 28mm-70mm 2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro, and one Tokina 80mm-200mm 2.8 AT-X for the same price as a new Nikon F6. As one would surmise, I own the former and not the latter. The F4 was, and will always be a classic Nikon offering. Sincerely Russ

Yesterday I attended an Amish sponsored Auction at the Gordonville Fire House. It's an annual fund raising event. While looking for something to bid on, I came across a large box with expensive cameras in it. They appeared to have been damaged by water. I bid on the Nikon F4S camera and for $45.00 I became the owner. I later took it home and began to clean it up. The body is in excellent condition. No scratches or wear marks on the body. I've decided to take it to a Philadelphia Camera Repair shop for repairs. That would be Comet Camera and Video Repair.

My question is, since this camera had been damaged by water, what am I looking at for repairs? Just cleaning the interior will suffice or will more extensive repairs will be required? Lastly, is this camera worth repairing? I've used the F4's in the past when doing weddings. It's a great camera. I'm considering to return to my past interest in photography. I'm hope this recent "find" will help in my hobby. Looking forward to hearing from the experienced photographers on my delimma

To those who may be interested: The new Nikon F5 site is opened for preview now:
<B>http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/NikonF5/index.htm</B>
The section has included some newer AF Micro-Nikkor optics at the MACRO segment (lacks good macro photos to bright up the pages, but I am talking to some for contributions). A dedicated Message Board is also provided. Enjoy.

Interesting update: Although the F4 has very few special edition. But Mr. Carlos CMM has mailed me some excellent images of the Special Production Nikon F3/T Classic models. They have been uploaded at:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/variations/F3Tclassic/index.htm
Take a visit and I hope he can shoot some additional images later for me. Thanks Carlos.

p.s. I am working on the Nikon F5 now (last few stages in its contruction process) - as I seldom go out to shoot pictures nowadays, so, if anyone of you wishes to participate in this project, please send me some NICE pictures (inspiring ones, PLEASE ...) to bright up the pages inside. Thanks. By the way, can I wish everyone a HAPPY, PROSPEROUS & PRODUCTIVE NEW YEAR 2005 !

greetings all, I got given the following bit of kit, and was wondering if these lens's (all AIS) will work with the autofocus on the nikon F4/s?

(last digit removed for security)

nikon nikkor 15mm 1:3.5 lens - serial 18494#
nikon nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 lens - serial 22265#
nikon teleconvertor TC-201 2x - serial 37726#
nikon zoom-nikkor 35-200mm 1:3.5-4.5 - serial 21544#
nikon zoom-nikkor 28-85mm 1:3.5-4.5 lens - serial 20078#
nikon zoom-nikkor 100-300mm 1:5.6 lens - serial 21453#

i have the F4s manual, and from the looks of it, they should work provided I have the nikon TC-16A autofocus Convertor (if the max aperture is faster than f/3.5) seems like the 20mm (f2.8) will not work as its max aperture is under 3.5? many thanks, JD

Hope I can help several people with questions. When shopping for an f4 the word is , stay with serial # above 245#####. The last major production modifications were made by that time. I have 2 F4s with newer serial # and have had no problems. I have found that F4s with a shiny section near the thumb groove on the back plate have probably been heavily used.Prior models all have a textured back plate which usually stands up better to heavy wear. The F4 was Nikons first foray into pro autofocus ,and one has to remember this. They came into their own with the F5 and F100. I have over 20 nikkor lenses , all MF. The F4, was to me their last top of the line manual focus camera. Built in motor, info in view finder, spot meter which is great with long lenses, and smaller profile with MB20 than motorized F3. However it is all electronic and will naturally be more prone to moisture problems. I usually prefer the F4 in dry mundane conditions away from cold or damp weather.

For extreme climates I will use F3s or an FM2. With both of these cameras I have skied into a tree well in Colorado and soaked an F3, and fell with an Fm2 several hundred feet down Mt Wahsington totally covering the camera with snow. A hair dryer was all they needed. The F4 is great because MOST of its features can be used with the MF lenses and is reasonably good for AF. If I was stepping up to a pro Nikon Slr for the first time and was mostly dependent on AF,for moving subjects, I would wait and save for an F100 or F5. Used prices for both are slowly coming down. The great comprimise is the F4, MF great AF ok and it comes in 3 sizes. For me and the shooting I do I usually still prefer the F3. I have found it to be the simplest and easiest to use. The viewfinder info is simpler and brighter than the F4. For long exposures the F4 is the way to go. Higher flash synch also. One other major consideration is noise. Compared to the prior F models the F4 sounds like an M Leica. One question for everyone when is Nikon coming out with a full frame sensor digital slr ?????????

The image of the Nikon F4X shown on the German website has obviously been cloned in photoshop. A nice idea, although I doubt if anything similar would ever pass the drawing board now that the Nikon F6 has been released.
