I have owned an FA for about 2 yrs. on releasing the shutter it makes a kind of rattling sound. It can be made to make this sound by operating (actually releasing) the depth of field button. Does anybody know of a cure, or is it serious ?

Hello Lars... yes you are right, the MD-11 does not take over the FA's power, as the MD-15 does. What I meant by "power" is that the MD-11 will provide motor drive to the camera, at least for a couple of hours... :-) Now, about this TTL adjusting thingy underneath the hand grip. It's inside the camera I take it? I'm having my FA serviced shortly and I, too would like to adjust the comp for fill flash. Then, of course, I'd forget to compensate for indoor flash... Jaymes

Jaymes - neither MD-11 nor MD-12 power the FA. Only MD-15 does that. On fill flash I have be thinking about setting the TTL flash level control (underneath the right front plate under the detachable hand-grip) to give a permanent compensation, as I use fill dflash much more often than flash-only.

Thanks for the reply, Lars. I traded the MD-11 for an MD-15 and the new combo works great. From my experience and the advice of others, the MD-11 should not be used with the FA. While the 11 will fit the FA and power it, there is an electrical incompatibility which drains both the camera and MD batteries. As for fill flash, it's easy if you train yourself to: 1) meter manually
2) turn on flash 3) set compensation Gets to be second nature and works quite well. Jaymes

Jaymes - I am not aware of a simple solution to the shut off problem with MD-11. Regarding TTL flash with camera in M mode; yes the on-camera compensation dial will control the flash output. In addition, the ambient metering will be disabled with a turned on flash moounted.

Does anyone know where I could send my FA to have the auto indexing ring fixed? The spring action on the AI ring is off so that there is no tention and the ring moves around free. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nikon FA + MD12. Just to help others. The MD12 doesn't power the FA completely, unlike the MD15. I experienced problems when the batteries of my FA were nearly empty, but not empty enough to stop functioning or switch of the LCD immediately. When the MD12 was connected, it would make some noise, but not advance the film or trip the shutter completely. Disconnect the MD12, set the camera to M250 and release the shutter.
Changing the batteries on the MD12 didn't solve this (of course). I changed the batteries of the FA attached the MD12, and I regained full functionality.

This was posted a while ago re fill flash on the FA: "Yes, the FA will revert to 1/250 sec shutter speed with a dedicated flash when the camera is used in any mode except manual, but, in manual mode you still have TTL flash and you can set the shutter speed to whatever you want and the compensation dial will also work. In manual mode the compensation dial has no effect on the ambient exposure but it will affect your TTL flash. So, for fill flash outdoors you can meter the background and set your shutter speed and aperture in manual mode. Dial in -1 compensation (or whatever compensation you want)on the camera, turn on your dedicated flash and fire away." This would seem like a simple way to get good fill flash results with an SB-15 or other TTL flash. But, before I run out and buy one, does anyone know if the compensation dial will in fact reduce the flash output when the FA is in manual mode? TIA Jaymes
