can someone PLEASE HELP ME?!!! one of my friends let me borrow his N5005 and i cant figure out how to work it, well he doesnt know how to work it either, he wanted me to figure it out then show him how to use it. it didnt come with an instruction manual. i know a little about cameras but mine that i use is an old Pentax K1000, so the Nikon i'm trying to figure out is way out of my league. k so heres my problem, i've tried to take pictures with it a couple times and everytime i do and i push the button half way down and it just flashes the plus and minus signs inside and wont let me take a pic. at first i thought it was because there wasnt enough light or something so i tried adjusting different things and it still wont work...i even tried changing the batteries...that didnt work either.....DID I BREAK SOMETHING????? cause if i did i'm in big trouble, that camera is his pride and joy. the problem is probably something totally simple and obvious but none the less i cant figure it out and would totally appreciate anyone who could help me know how to use this amazing piece of machinery. THANKS!!!

It's been awhile since I posted on this board, but I have a little problem with my FA. My FA, which I bought used a year ago, has seemed to be in excellent shape and has performed well (except for the tendency of the Matrix meter to over-expose in backlit situations, which I now am compensating for). However, I have noticed from time to time that pictures I thought I took didn’t show up in the prints I got back from the developer. This I attributed to my imperfectly-working synapses even though I still had this nagging feeling that things weren’t adding up properly.
But today I shot a roll, had it developed and transferred to a CD, got back home and I know for a fact that at least three (out of 36) pictures I remember taking this afternoon did not show up on the roll of negatives! (I looked!) In other words, all three of those pictures were accompanied by the familiar and reassuring slap of the mirror and shutter sounds that one associates with having pressed the shutter-release button. At no time did I press it and hear nothing – that’s a “non-barking dog” that I or anyone would have noticed! And now I’ve got three pictures that I "took" and will never be able to re-capture. So what is going on? Bad shutter? If so, how much should that sort of repair job cost (in the US - I'm in Azerbaijan right now, so will have to wait)? Let's pretend that I can find a shutter to canibalize from another FA. Pray, give me your views. Maybe it isn't the shuter... Thanks!

I just watched my FA spill out of my briefcase onto the hard floor. The pentaprism housing cracked, and there is no longer any metering or f-stop display, although the shutter workd fine, so battery power is OK. I thought maybe the prism shifted and I could fix it myself, but the thing is put together like a puzzle, and I couldn't get it apart. I called the nearest Nikon Repair Facility, and they said they can't repair the FA because parts are no longer available. Is this the end for my camera, or does anyone think I can find a relatively cheap FA parts body and fix the darn thing? Jay

I have a Vivitar Zoom Thyristor 5200 flash unit for my FA, and on the dedicated module, there is a switch marked EM or FG. The "type" of dedicated module is Vivitar PM/N, I am assuming this means it will interface the flash with the FA. I can't seem to find any info on this particular dedicated module, and I don't really know where the swith should be: EM or FG. If anyone has helpful info, please e-mail djtj@wi.rr.com. Thanks

Like several Nikon FA owners here, my FA's shutter just jammed recently. The mirror is up and the shutter wouldn't come back down to finish the shot. I had the camera mode on the mechanical 250s setting at the time, so it shouldn't be because of batteries. Putting in batteries and trying all other modes doesn't get the shutter back/mirror back. It's dead. Tried everything -- all settings, lens on / off, batteries in / out, etc.
The camera was last used 8-9 months ago.
Would like to know if its' worth repairing (I'm in Thailand). Or should I just retire the camera and place it on some shelf for nostalgia purposes. I've got 4 years of use from this Nikon FA (purchased used in 1999). I can still shoot with my other body (a 19 year old FE2 purchased new) if the FA's shutter isn't worth the trouble repairing --- besides Nikon Thailand doesn't stock parts of anything over 8-10 years.

Thanks to everyone who enquired about the MD-15 drive I was giving away. It has found a new home with someone who can bring it back to life.
