Dirt in the finder can stem from various places in the light path from the focussing screen to the eye-piece. Have you tried unscrewing the eye-piece? Another place to check is the focussing screen itself. Get a bulb blower to softly blow dry air. With a pair of special tweezers (from a replacement focusing screen) it is fairly easy to get the screen out for a gently blow. It is not impossible without these special tweezers but by very careful. With the screen out of the way, give the underside of the penta-prism a gentle blow too. If the dirt do not disappear you can gently use a little and very soft unused paint brush.

Aaron - your problem could be one of the lens - not the camera. If you calibrate your camera for this particular lens it will be " out of whack" with any other lens! As long as the film plane and focus screen plane is calibrated you will get what you see in the finder focus wise - and so you should. You may be able to calibrate the focus indication on your lens.

Anyone know where I can get a used rewind crank for the rewind knob on a Nikon FA? Local parts places want $45, Nikon direct wants about $12 + $9 for shipping! What a good deal on shipping for a part that weights about 1/10 oz. The camera rewind knob is there, there's just no flip out crank.
Also, once I have it, how do I put it on?
Email me directly at: jeffbach36@hotmail.com
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi,
I would like to find out how to adjust the Nikon FA's mirror rest position so that I can achieve better focusing accuracy. From my tests, I have found that my camera focuses about 1mm too close on the scale of the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 manual focus.
Any help is deeply appreciated.
Thanks,
Aaron

I am afraid FA is indeed primitive in this regard. In all modes but M it will revert the shutter to 1/250 s if it senses a dedicated flash. FA is not at all useful for easy fill flash.
Best regards,
Lars.

I have used a Nikon FE for the past three years for wedding photography having great success using it in aperature priority mode with flash outdoors for fill, and just manually inside. I recently bought an FA for the sole purpose of it's TTL Flash Metering ability. I already had a Metz 45 ct-4 and bought the dedicated module and cord to connect my Flash with my FA, but I connot figure out how to control my shutter speed in any mode except full manual. I commonly fix my aperature and drag my shutter to provide more ambient light, but the FA seems to always default to 250 in any mode except manual. I find it hard to believe that a camera this advanced could be this limited, so I must be doing something wrong. I am always bouncing flash and having to mentally figure out my compensation, and hoped that this camera would do it for me using the TTL flash metering. Please advise.

Tony you are right - The exp. comp. LED should not always be on. Probably a switch underneath the ISO dial is shorted.
It is not impossible to get at it.You need to remove the rewind shaft by turning the handle anti clockwise while you hold the shaft by fitting something in the fork (with an open or detached door - mind the shutter curtains while doing this). Then you need to remove the little clip ring holding the cover of the ISO dial assembly. The assembly itself is held by two normal crosspoint screws and a special screw wich might be unscrewed by a pair of tweezers. If not, you may have to make a little fork-tipped tool. After having lifted the assembly you, should get at the switch. It is a sliding brush switch with two "arms". When the comp. dial is set at zero, the brush should be alligned with a gap.

Scott - OTF means "Off The Film". The light reflected off the film is measured and the flash is turned off only when enough light has reached the metering cell in the bottom of the mirror house - this amount has been calibrated with the exposure of the film.

Hai,
I bought my used FA complete with MD-15 way back in 1986 & took many great pictures with it. I must say that the metering system at that time was one of the best. I've never had any problems until recently, when the shutter jammed. I've sent it to the S'pore agent but they can't repair as there are no spare parts available. I'm wondering if anyone can help me & suggest anywhere I can send my FA for repairs. I've grown quite attached to this camera & would really appreciate any help.
Many thanks.
Zul
