Everytime when I see someone mentioning the XD-7, it was just being referred as the world's first multimode SLR while information on the great XK camera was so scarce that as if Minolta wants to shy away from others. Although I understand these two were great cameras of yesteryears but I don't totally write off them as a perfect used entry cameras. Hi. I have just spent approx $400 AU on the repair of my X-1 (XM, XK). It works perfectly and is a fine camera. I had it repaired in Melbourne (Australia). I never purchased the optional accessory hot shoe which, according to the manual, "slides onto the accessory mount at the base of the backcover release knob and locks in place." I would like to purchase one of these optional accessory hot shoes. Could anyone let me know where I could purchase one. Thanks. Wayne Bacon3. From : K Boudreau (ktb_boudreau@yahoo.ca)

About batteries &the XD11/7: If you are in a bind with no batteries, it is still possible to operate the shutter. It continues to work for B and O, but for all others you simply have to set the timer. It takes longer to take the picture, of course, but this trick can sometimes be quite useful.4. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what type of battery the XD11 takes. We have lost the manual, and there haven't been any batteries in it for a while, so we forgot what they were. We tried hearing-aid batteries, but I think they were too weak. What voltage is needed? We have been using the timer to run the shutter for a while, but that has become quite annoying, of course. Thanks for your help! Please email me.5. From : David McLachlan (mclachlan@hfx.eastink.ca)

Does anyone have a wiring diagram, and wire routing for the flash socket and hotshoe for the Minolta XK? or repair manual? A couple of years ago I took out the hotshoe connection during an extensive flash photo shoot ( I think it is a melt down of a wire connection), the flash socket still worked for some time and then it to went down also after an extended period of extensive flash usage. Has anyone else had a similar experience and been able to correct it?
Thanks

In reponse to Brooke's question:
You can replace the screen of the XD-11/XD-7 (I have done so for cleaning it), but in order to minimise the risk of damaging it you will need to remove the lens-mount, the round thin metal cover plate which covers the edges of the rectangular mirror box opening and the little clip which hold the screen in place before you take the screen out. Also keep in mind that when you place the screen back (even the same screen) you need to readjust the screen position to bring it back into the correct focus-register position. This requires an accuracy of 20 microns!!! For this purpose you will thus also need to remove the top cover to access the screen adjustment screws which are located around the pentaprism. If anyone ever tells you they have successfully replaced the screen without having to re-adjust its position (focus-register) afterwards they have not taken any subsequent shots at f/1.7, f/1.4 ot f/1.2. Also please keep in mind that since the camera meters through the screen, if you replace it with another type of screen you will undoubtedly need to get the meter compensated and readjusted.
Maybe more hassle than what it's worth...
Mark

Hello all and a Merry Christmas: Has anyone experienced changing the focusing screen on their XD-11? I know that Minolta screens were not sold for this camera, but what about aftermarket? I'd love to have a grid screen for this camera. Oh ya, add a mirror lock-up, TTL flash metering, and you have the pefect camera. thanks, Brooke8. From : Gino Mancini (Gino@mancini99.freeserve.co.uk)

I would just like to make a couple of observations to the instruction manuals:
It might be worth making the point that there were two different AE finders available for the camera :- the 'Auto Electro' and the 'AE-S'. The Auto Electro was of course the first version and had CDS cells, while the AE-S was later and had a Silicon sensor. Interestingly, my XM manual indicates that both finders were available at the same time. The AE-S was though rather more expensive, and I think it was about the same cost as a bare XM body. Though both these finders are actually rather more complex than a 'simple' camera body. For in addition to all the optics, AE metering, and 'various bits of string' they
also contained a complete set of shutter timing electronics as well. (Yes an XM with an auto finder contained two complete sets of shutter electronics.) So it is probable that CDS finders remained standard fit on the manual bodies, while the Silicon finders were supplied with the motor because of their much faster responses.
The AE-S finder might actually also be the very first 'implementation
of silicon sensors in 35mm photography (or any other type of photography for that matter). The AE-S finder was though 'only' centre weighted (as opposed to Minolta's established 'CLC' system), but was much more sensitive. It is also far nicer to look through with all those LED's and the two switchable scales...
The other point is to do with the shutter. Sometimes when you have a flat battery, or are not pressing the 'senswitch', or have not turned the camera on etc - if you fire the shutter, the mirror can remain locked in the up position.
Normally when you press the shutter release, all sorts of things happen:
Something like this:
1 - Mirror flips up, 1st blind released, shutter timing electronics started, 2 - After 'the proper time' the electronics release the 2nd blind which follows the 1st blind across the focal plain.
3 - When the 2nd blind hits its break, this 'impact' causes it to release a couple of fairly powerful springs that 're-charge' the mirror, causing it to flip back down. (When the mirror is down it is actually under some tension - so that it can flip up rapidly)
When there is a problem - like flat batteries etc - the shutter firing sequence may not be quite correct and 2nd blind may not trip those mirror 're-charge' springs.
Now despite what the manual says, you might sometime be confronted by a relatively dead camera with a locked up mirror. I don.t recall where I first found this out, it might have been while talking to one of their service people, but you can actually re-set a locked up mirror without taking the camera apart. If you open the battery hatch and look carefully around the inside rim of the hatch, near where the 'C' is engraved you will find a little lever. If you push this towards the rear of the camera, this should trip the mirror back down.
Cheers. Gino.9. From : James Gilmartin (JAGOGETEM@AOL.COM)
