I have and still use regularly Xd7's, one chrome, and one black chrome as I believe they are called. Only problem has been poor seals with light getting in. This was easily repaired. I love the quiet shutter compared with X700.I also occasionally use an XM(I have an XK which has been in the repair shop for a year for shutter speed adjustement) which is nice to use. All have given great exposures in many different light situations using rokkors from 16mm to 250mm. The XM has also occasionally bounced, not far because of the weight!
Great Site lets hope we can keep using them

I know this is not entirely camera related, but I do have a question: Someone has advertised a fast speed Minolta MD-X zoom 40-80/2.8 lens at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/index.php3 what is the "X" stands for ? I wen to check the lens, it has a attachment which seems like a motorised device attach to the zoom. Is it a motorized AF lens for the manual focus Minolta ??

Looking for a Minolta XK with motor drive must be in very good condition physically and mechanically. Willing to do some trading. I might have something you might be interested in. I live in the Chicagoland area. If you are looking for a Schwinn Krate bicycle I might be able to hook you up. If you want to sell it straight out for cash let me know as well.

In Response to Alex' question about the slow mirror response: This is due to a soiled mirror damper. In the XD-7 a pneumatic damper delays the mirror and subsequent shutter firing for about 52 milliseconds after the aperture has started to close down. This is in order to make sure the aperture has closed down and has stabilised. When the damper reaches the end of its stroke, the light value metered through the closed aperture is stored in memory and determines the shutter speed, upon which the mirror lifts. When the mirror has lifted about two thirds of the way up, the shutter fires.

A soiled mirror damper will slow the pneumatic piston down and the delay between the aperture closing and mirror lifting may then be several seconds in severe cases. When fitted in the factory the damper piston is lubricated and then wiped dry before inserting in the cylinder. The minute remaining oil film can become a bit sticky after many years. The damper will have to be removed, cleaned, lubed, cleaned again an refitted. After that the damper timing has to be re-adjusted by adjusting a tiny screw on the damper which sets the length of the damper-stroke.

A worn damper leads to too short a delay and will give inconsistent underexposure of the film as the light value is stored in memory before the aperture has completely closed down. Usually this means the damper has to be replaced with a new one.

The mirror damper can be accessed and removed after removing the plastic cover around the lens mount and the little cloth-tape covered damper cover underneath. Get an expert repairman to clean it for you. If you want to do it yourself, you can use lighter fluid to clean both the piston and cilinder. Lube only the piston with a VERY thin and light oil and wipe dry before refitting. Beware which way the spring comes out of the damper when you remove it, the spring has a short and long tab at either end.

Good luck!

Hello to you all !

Ten years ago I sold my complete XD-7 set (which i bought in 1978) to a relative of my, and yesterday I all sold it back from him for a few bucks..
Obviously the camera was not used for years..

Although it stil in excellent shape, the XD-7 (=XD11) only did show a strange behavour.

Pressing the release knob, the aperture closes immediately, but then it takes about a 1/3 of a second until the mirror/shutter mechanisme comes in action...

Is this a normal behavour for the XD camera's, or is this a malfunction of this camera ??? and if so, can it be repaired ???

Who knows the ANSWER ??
