Hello, Can somebody inform me how many F2 25th anniversary models were sold/made for the US market? When (what years) were these available? Thank you for your time. Anthony

Hi Howard. I can tell you regarding your question of the F2 vs. an FM2, the F2 is physically bigger and heavier, although how much difference in an underwater housing that makes I would not be sure. Both have their tripod holes near the center of the bottom plate. If the housing you are looking at was designed for the F2, my guess is it will be too big for the FM2.

Tim, I have heard of counters not moving forward when advancing, but not going back to zero after 5 or 6 shots. There must be a problem in the gearing at that point on the counter ring that needs to be looked at by a repairer. I would shy away from opening up a mechanical camera myself- especially an F2. Too many parts and springs that can go flying off if you are not familiar with one. Check the website "Cameraquest.com" or check shutterbug ads for techs who work on the F2. If the problem requires a part, chances are it's available somewhere, but not from Nikon. Many shops have access to second-hand parts and should be able to fix your counter. It will probably cost you $75-$100 minimum to have it fixed- these are now specialty repairs on a camera like the F2 that is so long out of production.

Hi, Robert. Lucky you! A D100- very nice. As long as the AF lenses you are acquiring are not the "G" type without an aperture ring, any AF Nikkor will work perfectly with your F2AS. As long as it's monetarily possible, I would hold on to your F2AS and use it for those times when a situation lends itself to the use of film as upposed to digital, or just as an alternative for yourself to the D100.

does anyone know if there is a mechanical difference between the NikonF2 and the FM2. I am interested in purchasing a Ikelite water housing that fits a F2 brand new in the box with a domeport. But can it fit my camera the FM2. The million dollar question. Also does anyone know how much an Ikelite housing should sell for?

Any suggestions to help out a Nikon F2 novice - I'm certain that I'm loading the film correctly , but on the last couple of occasions I've noticed the frame counter go back to the beginning after only five or six shots . I've opened up the back (in as dark an environment as possible !) and the film appears to have wound on okay . Is there an easy fix , and how easy is it for a fool like me to load the film incorrectly ? I look forward to suggestions . Tim Scott

Film advance lever does not lock open on my F2A. Anyone know what it will cost to repair?

Greetings, For 25 years I have been a devout devotee of the Nikon F2AS. I have enjoyed several of these splendid cameras and presently own two which are still in good to excellent condition. During the past year I have begun delving into digital photography with the D100, and now I am beginning to acquire AF lenses. Despite the convenience of digital, I am still reluctant to release my grip on film. My question: Besides the similarity in design, the faster flash sync speed and its ability to fully use the AF lenses, is there any compelling reason why I should abandon the F2AS in favor of the F100? Many thanks for your impressions. -Robert

Daniel, Your F2a will take either AI or non-AI lenses. It is designed to be mainly used with AI lenses. There's a tab that extends down from the prism that mates with the meter coupling ridge at the back of all AI lenses. If you use non-AI lenses, you have to lock that ridge up into the prism and meter stopped down. If you don't lock it up whe using non-AI lenses you can damage that tab. There's a sliding button that unlocks the tab when you go back to AI lenses.

There are shops that specialize in F2's. Check the back of Shutterbug magazine- they list many. Also check out the "repairs" section of the website "cameraquest.com". F2 body CLA's (clean, lube and adjustment) run, typically, around $150-$175. That's a pretty common amount for any mechanical camera these days. There are also people who specialize in the repair and maintenance of the F2 meter prisms. If anyone tells you they cannot be repaired, don't believe them! Check out this repair site on F and F2 prisms: http://hometown.aol.com/drwyn/myhomepage/index.html He does great work.
