I have created three web pages to compare the fake F2T against my genuine one. However, there are 23 photos and my free Geocities web site gets block easily, when more than a few people are reading it. Would anyone be interested to host these three web pages?

As a workaround, I have made a four page Word document. Please email privately for a copy, and feel free to circulate it. I hate to see another collector conned. My email address is

soverf2repair@yahoo.com

Sover

A customer sent an F2T to me for service, and I immediately noticed the back is the aluminium version and not the titanium version. (Aluminium F2 back is ~60g whereas the Titanium back is ~80g.)

The camera came from an eBay dealer in Hong Kong, and presently my customer is still fighting for compensation.

Then I noticed the take up spool on this F2T has 6 slots, which ended in 1973. Also, the screws are slotted instead of philips. Hence I realised this F2T is a complete fake.

The faker did the following :

- Take one mint in box black F2 eye level camera, of any vintage

- Replaced top, bottom, front, DE-1 cover and name plates with titanium ones. (The faker bought genuine spare parts from Nikon) He did not change the back because the aluminium one looks exactly the same as the titanium one, so he thought.

- Put fake stickers on the box

There is no warranty papers with this fake F2T, as they are harder to make but not impossible. (A printer offered to make fake warranty papers for me two years ago, and I refused.)

Orientals are well known to make fake watches, but I didn't know they make fake cameras until now.

I am sure this is not the only fake F2T on the market, but it's the first fake one I've seen.

So never buy an unused F2T without warranty papers and check the weight of the back before handing over any money.

Scary stuff.

Hello David,

There were about 800,000 F2s made, so even with 1% of them still being used, there are 8000 F2 users out there. The number is of course much higher, but it's impossible to put an estimate on it.

Hope you're still enjoying your F2AS.

Regards,

Sover

Hi Eric,

Have you taken the batteries out and check their voltages. If they are 1.5V each, then the problem is a corroded tag inside the F2 body. This is not something you can access without removing the front assembly.

If the batteries are lower than 1.2V, then it's likely the F2 on/off switch is always on. This can be remedied by adjusting the switch contacts spacing. The switch can be accessed by removing the base plate.

Regards,

Sover
