Based on S/N, it is a Nikon F2 produced in a late pre-F3 period. The main issue is whether you have a DP-12 finder (which marks a white letter "AS"). If its has, use this as the manual: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/f2/nikonf2as/index.htm
If it has only a "A" alphabet, it is a F2 with DP-11 photomic finder, then, the manual is here: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/f2/nikonf2a/index.htm
in fact, the only user's manual missing in this terrific Nikon site is the F2SB (uses a DP-3 Photomic finder), great stuffs, lucky me !2. From : De Michel Chiu Taiwan (iishun@pchome.com.tw)

David: Here is a useful link to the Nikon F3 Flash section:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/flash/index.htm there are individual links to EVERY non-AF Nikon speedlights (from Fan-type, SB-1 to SB21) which you can used it as a buying reference (just in case you insist it must bear a Nikon name tag); while another link here is pointed to the Nikon F2 flash: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/flash/index.htm It is essntial for you to understand the Nikon F2 also has a bloody non-ISO standard accessory shoe design and the page addresses various flash couplers needed when other Nikon flash units are used with your F2 (any model). Since you have mentioned in the posting that you owned a 283 before and I have to assume you MUST already have a flash coupler in place onto your camera (does Vivitar has a dedicated F2's 283 ?? I guess not..). If that is the case, this can widen the scope to search for a good speedlight (non Nikon specific models can be used now..). Frankly, if you are complainting a relatively compact 283 is still far too bulky to your liking, well ... just stick to third party brand again. Like buy a Yashica portable (very very small in dimension) but again the compromise is, when flashs are "small in size", they usually have lower guide numbers (power output), the effective flash working distance may even reduce down to about 8-10 feet. Well, make your choice.5. From : David (jekir@shaw.ca)

I own a F2As and am in need of a new flash. I find that many are far to bulky and seem to make the camera feel out of balance. I owned a old Vivitar 283 (finaly quit) which felt WAY to big for my liking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to buy a Nikon F2- only trouble is which one. The F2as seems best but expensive- is the F2a the best compromise. I don't have any lenses yet. Sorry to ask a dumb question! Margaret.
