Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Pentax LX - Message Board/Guestbook

Industry wide indications and ceasing film body development by Pentax altogether in early 2003 more than suggest the manual focus Pentax LX will not be having an upgrade (except, perhaps for very rare Limited Edition Models hand assembled by special commission by the new HoyaPentax Corporation). In 2008 Pentax became a division of Hoya Corporation, which had together with Pentax released jointly developed professional grade optics (since 2005); Pentax has shifted its attention to development of auto focus Digital SLRs having build qualities constructed for the long run--now with weather seals--like the LX. You may use this site for common support and sharing of mutual users knowledge or experiences among yourselves. You may also use this message board as a guestbook for the advanced users Pentax SLR cameras from the LX forward, including many such auto focus film cameras, and Pentax digital SLR cameras. We keep the site going too for the WORD SEARCH FEATURE found here as to its magnificent K mount system user archives: as have been shared here for many years. Have an inquiry related to Pentax gear? First try KEYING IN YOUR KEY WORD(S) for a preexisting archived response on your subject of inquiry from this LX site. If your inquiry or sharing is from advanced users K10D, K20D, or K200D SLR needs, proceed on to t NEW PENTAX ADVANCED USERS K10D, K20D SLR site.

This LX site was specifically created for the great Pentax LX SLR camera model(s), and now has incorporated increased opportunity for an expanded interchange with the introductions of the Pentax K10D, K20D, and K200D SLRs to include advanced and professional digital user models. Interchange is encouraged with the intention to continue as a forum for advanced system users of past K-mount film based SLR systems and the mentioned Pentax DSLRs. With decreasing forum traffic here, and enthusiasts moving on with SLR digital imaging products futures, we hope the continued convenience of this site and its past Pentax advanced LX users data archives--provided by the database KEY WORD SEARCH FEATURE found here--can be very useful to you. Most past site user techniques, systems components, and lenses of Pentax advanced applications--as have been past examined by users on this site--are still of use regarding the newest Pentax SLRs. Please don't mail us with other than constructive suggestions or to rectify mistakes found within this site, thank you. Since this is a non-profitable resource site, maintained by professional and advanced system users, the developer of this site reserves the rights to censor or delete any inappropriate, unrelated, misleading or excessively hostile messages posted herein. If your intention is to dispose of your Pentax cameras or its accompanying accessories and/or you are looking for a used model, or even for any of its system components: please use a separate section with a higher volume of related traffic for these purposes: on the
Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia sites sponsor has no Guestbook standing on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience of visiting our site and its service, you may use the MIR's Guestbook found at another new window by clicking on the Guestbook Link.

Thank you thank you.. It is a pleasnt surprise to have found this site. My gal friend was given a LX by his uncle and I have no idea of how to teach her to use it. This site and this GREAT forum has provided me MORE than what I need to learn the camera and the system. Once again, please keep up wit the good work. Have a great day, everybody !!!

Dan - A few questions if I may? I have been contracted to make a movie film (digital DVD format) during 2005 in USA. I will probably buy the Canon Xls plus the normal zoom telephoto zoom and wide angle zoom (possibly also a manual zoom, and even an adapter to be able to use some Nikon SLR lenses on it). What are your opinions on the XL1s (is it worth the extra money over the original Xl1? Or even over the latest Xl2?). I will need at least television quality for future sales of the finished DVD film.

Being in the broadcast video profession, I know that matching lenses to imagers is CRUCIAL. While I would love to say that using old lenses with new digital bodies is a desire of mine, in reality, those lenses will not work nearly as well as a lens designed for a particular imager. And the real phenomenon is the fact that a lens that is too sharp for the pixel will actually create digital imaging problems/artifacts. I think there will some real interesting results, some desirable and some not, as older and newer lenses are used with imagers as they get denser. This probably doesn't need to be said, but I already wrote it so there it is.

Okay, I'm a little embarrased with my "parralax" statement while discussing SLRs. I do own a rangefinder camera (Koni-Omega Rapid Reflex 6x8) which alway gives me parralax problems even at medium distances. But, I do remember having a problem with my first brand new Pentax (an ME-Super) with macro-pohotography. The framing and focus plane was off. Perhaps that camera had a made mirror/focusing screen alignment. It was probably bad on all shots, but the macro amplified the problem.

Of note: The new Minolta Dynax 7D has "anti-shake" technology (= IS/VR) actually built into the SLR body! Maybe that section of my earlier "wants list" that longed-for anti-vibration built into the body of a digital LXII so that ALL Pentax lenses will work as image stabilisation lenses, will eventually come true!....Only time will tell.

I understand what you mean about holding back for a year or two, Jay. The pace is hotting up and prices are falling!

Talking about digi-backs for 645, I've noticed that Mamiya have brought out a 21.5-million pixels 645 series camera - the Mamiya ZD. They also have a ZD back to fit the RZ 67 Pro II D. Hasselblad have also gone digital with its 22-megapixel HI. In the 35mm format, Canon have updated their flagship model to the EOS-1Ds Mark II. This mega model produces full-frame 16.7 million pixel images to make approximately 50MB files.(Mind you, my cheap Minolta 5400 scanner makes 105MB files from my 35mm film with ease, so I'm not yet drawn to sell up my film-based SLRs just yet!). Pentax have released the *ist DS with 6.1 megapixels and two new lenses. Where IS that 20meg LX11? (I also wish that Pentax would drop that silly *ist name, because MX and LX sound so much better!).

Sigma have released a few new lenses for the four Thirds system (Olympus E-1 pro model). I'm more interested in their new full frame lens offering, the 150mm f/2.8 macro, which should be a very versatile lens. Olympus themselves have brought out a budget model E-300, although it is has more pixels than the pro E-1 model and more advanced features...talk about keeping up with the pace! I bet the E-300 flaws the slow sales of the E-1 even further... Nikon already have the DX2 12.4 megapixel DSLR - with 5-frames per second at full resolution or 8-frames per second at 6.8 megapixels. It is a mouthwatering option when I think back and look at the 1.5 meg pixel pro cameras that came out only a handful of years ago! All I have to do is wait a couple of years until all these lovely cameras come down to rock-bottom price on the secondhand Ebay sales! And by that time, no doubt Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax will have their 35mm 20-megapixel DSLRs on show...

My only extra thoughts on all this are that a top Pro-level DSLR camera body can now be almost obsolete in less than 18-months, yet cameras such as the Pentax LX, Canon F1, Nikon F3 etc had lives spanning decades... Hold onto that Pentax 6X7, 645, or LX for a few decades longer...even if its only to use up that dwindling pile of films filling up the freezer...Come to think of it, I've just filled up mine with another big supply of film...

I am trying to clear out topics before I go. Kodak no longer makes any digital backs, nor does Calumet. This means that the half dozen manufactures left are strictly medium format, and only two fit the studio 6 X 7 Mamiyas, but in lesser sensor size. The majority are 645 in size (there are still some advantages for pro use, but they are very expensive $10,000 and up for the large MP units. One best know their cash flow.). If I were retooling today, I'd likely wait at least one half year then buy small format 14MP or up. Lens availablity and available 35mm manufacturers will raise the quality and body offerings. It makes little sense to shoot weddings on medium format film any longer since the small format digitals are getting so good, it is the major trend. I probably won't buy another medium format back, even if greater MP than my existing one, for, what is the point with the small formats rising? Now is the time to rethink your gear, and sell while you can. --Jay
